It's insane how many articles Billboard has been posting about this, they are soooo milking it!

With more than three days left in the sales tracking week (as it ends at the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 26), COB where exactly? Nielsen is based out of NYC. What does COB even mean in a 24/7 online economy? Keith has been with Billboard for 10+ years so he's still thinking about Tower Records/Sam Goody's closing time of 10pm. LOL I can't remember why Billboard discussed this (Grammys?) but I think the end of the tracking week is 11:59pm for each time zone.

Glad ADELE smashed the record, if not for "Hello," my gut was saying that '25' might end up more like this era (the awards, acclaim, style, talent and demos) are the closest potential comparison I could think of: Norah Jones; Feels Like Home; 1,022,000; Feb. 15, 2004 I'm curious how they will work subsequent singles to radio - WWWY I don't think is going to be as radio friendly (long-term) as some may think.

But Norah Jones was never a pop star.. I'd say if Feels Like Home went on selling 4XP, 25 can go 8XP

But Norah Jones was never a pop star.. I'd say if Feels Like Home went on selling 4XP, 25 can go 8XP That's why I said 'closest' - there are differences - pop radio playing several ADELE singles off of '21,' the Top 10 success of 'bridge' single "Skyfall,' etc. But there are a great number of similarities - Norah just couldn't get pop radio support, which wasn't surprising considering what Top 40 radio was like during first half of '00s" And, FLH, wasn't a huge success by any reasonable metric, one just wonders if NJ has been able to get a radio hit or two, how big that era would've been.

so she sold 400k yesterday. With more promotion coming up in the days ahead and 4 more days of sales, I can see this doing 3.3-3.6 million and possibly beating "Candle In The Wind" for most copies of a record sold in a single week. Which is astounding since that was a single and this is an album. The fact 3 million+ is pretty much on lock and we have black friday next week. If she were to sell 3.5 million first week and had a 68% drop second week she'd sell ~1.1 million next week. Factor in black friday and her second week could be 1.3-1.6 million. She might do 5 million copies in 2 weeks... This is just so exciting! Can't believe how well this album is doing. It's had the perfect rollout which I didn't think possible. I can see the album doing 8 million by the end of the year now. *_* The whole Black Friday numbers will be VERY different with this project because of the amount it is selling in the days previous

Some of these predictions for Adele during Christmas are really low-balling it, especially since Christmas is a Friday and thus the 7 biggest shopping days will all be counted in the same sales week (Dec 18-24). I would not be surprised by a 700k+ week then.

When do we get full projections beyond Adele? Curious what Bieber and 1D will do in their respective 2nd weeks.

I'm dead. We are going to have a week where the #1 album sells over 19x as many albums as the #2 album. Just absolutely dead. Adele, you slay girl!

Adele's sold 216K in Canada in 4 days too, meaning she'll beat Celine Dion's record of 230K first week with "Let's Talk About Love".

So an 80% drop for 1D then And only a 70-72% drop for Justin! I didn't know Jadakiss had an album out. Good numbers for Enya, I guess. Carrie Underwood has an increase this week. "21" back in the Top 10.

I'm surprised that 19 isn't on the list. I thought at least with digital it would have crept up there. Maybe it is right under those numbers? Maybe another 10k?

How much has Justin's "Believe" scanned? This release will easily beat it I'm assuming.

Is the album that good though? It's doing great out of the gate because of all the hype, but I don't think it'll have 21's longevity.I think it will have similar longevity to 21. It'll sell about half to three quaters of its total sales this Q4 and then they'll release ~4-5 singles leading up to the 2017 Grammys where I expect she'll do well (I can see "Hello" winning Record/Song of The Year & Pop vocal perfomance given its success and huge positive reception at the very least). So I think it'll stick around until then and sell a bunch more after the grammys before dying down late spring/summer 2017 (unless they decide to do a re-release or something). Do you guys realistically see Adele promoting this album for fifteen months? She shot TWO videos for 21. She'll probably get tired of this quickly and say she misses spending more time with her family.

A record held by an album with "Bye Bye Bye" in it beaten by an album with "Hello" in it. Funny.

She'll probably get tired of this quickly and say she misses spending more time with her family. This album campaign is setting up to be similar to 21. They started in late 2010 with "Rolling In The Deep" and then ended with the 2012 Grammys (so ~15 months). Releasing/sending songs to radio doesn't take much effort, neither does recording videos for the song. Adele is in a completely different place now than when she was originally promoting 21. Not to mention there are plans for Adele to do a world tour to support the album as well. So realistically, yes I can see Adele promoting the album for the next fifteen months (I'm sure she'll get plenty of breaks between promoting singles and in the lead up to her tour though).

www.billboard.com/articles/business/6770441/adele-25-first-week-retail-sales-raveAdele Is Bringing 'Excitement the Industry Has Sorely Needed,' Retailers RaveBy Ed Christman and Dan Rys | November 24, 2015 What’s the only surprise about the first week sales of Adele’s 25? They’re even bigger than predicted. On Nov. 18, sources told Billboard that Columbia Records was shipping 3.6 million physical copies of the album to retail stores around the U.S., paving the way for Adele to top *NSYNC's No Strings Attached -- which moved 2.42 million copies in its first week in 2000 -- as the highest-selling first week in the Nielsen SoundScan era. She didn't even need the full week to reach that milestone: 25 soared past the record on Monday, moving 2.433 million copies and putting the album on track for 2.9 million sales in its first week -- a milestone that the artist’s apparently last-minute decision to withhold 25 from streaming services, at least for now, certainly didn’t hurt. "Well lookie here, there is life in those physical bones!" says Laura Provenzano, vp of purchasing Alliance Entertainment, the second-largest U.S. music wholesaler. "Adele just reminded everyone how vitally important the physical medium is and remains. A tangible item, something you can hold, touch and feel like you are more singularly connected to an artist and their music as a larger body of work than a digital file would ever allow." Across the board, retailers and wholesales says Adele’s 25 album is delivering bigger than expected, and with very little discounting. Merchants say, frankly, there's no real need for any price breaks in order to move this record. According to sources, iTunes sold more than one million copies of Adele’s 25 over the weekend on its way to projected sales of about 1.6 million units by the end of the week. Moreover, Target sold 529,000 through Sunday and was forecast to sell 700,000, while Walmart moved 229,000 copies over the Friday-Saturday-Sunday stretch, and expects that number to rise to 389,000 by the end of the tracking week. Best Buy, sources say, sold 56,000 copies over the same period, expecting to wind up in the 90,000 range by week's end. That means that those four accounts alone sold 1.81 million copies over the weekend, or 78 percent of the 2.3 million cited by Nielsen Music from the first three days of release (it has since passed 2.4 million). Moreover, those accounts combined are projected to sell at least 2.6 million units in the debut week of the projected 2.9 million total. The album is “generating fantastic energy and excitement that the industry has sorely needed,” says another music merchandiser. “While many say the initial success is related to the unique and great talents of Adele, there is no questioning that statement. But I wonder if this also a mandate from the public that if you deliver high integrity [and] artistry with exceptional songs, the masses will consume. Perhaps we need to step up the quality we deliver?" Another aspect that is moving better than expected is the Adele catalog. Her new studio album, her third, has ignited sales of Adele’s first two albums 19 and 21. Newbury Comics head buyer Carl Mello says sales of 21 are "exploding," while Steve Harkins, vp of music at Baker & Taylor, says that 25 has "certainly propelled her catalog unlike [what] we’ve seen with other artists in recent years." Of course, these numbers are all coming in pure album sales, as the diva declined to make 25 available to streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, at least in its first week, and it's causing some to question the wisdom of releasing new albums to streaming services right away. “While streaming is clearly an important part of our industry’s fabric, it would seem obvious that the monumental sales date were accomplished in some part by restricting streaming," says the merchandiser. "Clearly artists under development need the exposure [of streaming], but does this not beg the question -- what would the sales and revenue stream look like if streaming was restricted, or at least held back, within a window when prominent artists release new albums? It certainly warrants some exploration."

Truly stunning. In the last couple of years, we've speculated about 21's follow-up. We assumed it would do well enough but fall short of anything resembling the numbers 21 put up. We said even if it sells 2, 3, 4 million copies, that it should be looked at as a success. Well, here we are and it's selling 3 million copies in its first week! With all of the holiday shopping season in front of us. Add to that, the reception is great and will probably breed a couple more successful singles, not to mention some awards between August 2016 and February 2017. I have no idea where this is headed in terms of total sales but it's already nothing short of a miracle.

I don't think this album's campaign can be similar to 21's. Last album people were discovering her slowly, it took a while for the songs to catch on. The second single was released in the US by July or something. Do you expect her label to wait until July to release the second single and then until 2017 to release the third single, like they did with 21?
