Fearless was the top selling album released in 2008, but not the top selling album OF 2008 (that would be Tha Carter III, released in June)

1989 came out October 27. That looks to be the current record holder.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6770482/adele-25-other-million-selling-albumsAdele's '25' Is the 20th Album to Sell a Million Copies in a Week: See the Full ListBy Keith Caulfield | November 23, 2015 10:00 PM EST With Adeleβs 25 having already sold at least 2.3 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music, it has joined an elite club of albums that have sold a million copies in a single week. Since Nielsen Music started tracking point of sale music purchases in 1991, Adeleβs new album is only the 20th to sell at least a million copies in a single week. (And certainly, the sales figure for 25 will increase, as that 2.3 million total is only for the setβs first three days on sale. It still has another four days left in its initial tracking week, which ends on Nov. 26.) The first album to manage the feat was the Whitney Houston-led The Bodyguard soundtrack, which powered through 1,061,000 copies in its sixth week of release (week ending Jan. 3, 1993). The first set to debut with a million copies sold in the Nielsen era was Garth Brooksβ Double Live (1,086,000 in the week ending Nov. 22, 1998). Of the 20 million-selling weeks, all but three were registered during an albumβs debut frame. In addition to The Bodyguard, The Beatlesβ 1 also hit the million mark in its sixth week (ending Dec. 24, 2000). The third non-debuting million seller was Eminemβs The Eminem Show, which sold 1,322,000 million in its second chart week (ending June 2, 2002), following an early debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (with 285,000) after its release was pushed up by four days to Friday, May 23 (giving the set just three days of sales for its No. 1 debut). Here are the 20 albums (including 25) that have sold a million copies in a single week, starting with the latest entry, 25. (Note: No one album has ever sold more than a million copies in more than one week, so this list can also be viewed as the 20 instances where an album sold a million copies period.) This is just crazzy!! Adele not only breaking the record, but smashing it to bits......
I think this is how the sales are gonna go
20-26 Nov: 3,000,000 27 Nov-3 Dec: 1,200,000 4-10 Dec: 700,000 11-17 Dec: 500,00 18-24 Dec: 600,000 25-31 Dec: 400,000
Total: 6,400,000
So it should cross 6 million by year-end. I don't think 7 million will happen, though.

Wow, could Adele do it? This thread has been a very entertaining read. :) I'm thinking 5 million by the end of the year is easily doable.

Here's a more pessimistic prognosis:
Week 1: 2.9 million Week 2: 900k Week 3: 400k Week 4: 250k Week 5: 350k Week 6: 150k
Total: 4.900k
Actually, I do think that is lowballing it, but I don't think it will clear 1 million next week and I think the sales will settle down sooner than most of you.

This is what Taylor Swifts' 1989 sold in its 1st 10 weeks: 1,286,544 401,599 312,000 214,000 339,000 - Black Friday boost 230,000 278,000 331,000 - Christmas boost 326,000 - Christmas boost 172,000 I don't see how '25' starting with 2.5x '1989' will so soon dip below it in sales.

Official: Adele Breaks *NSYNC's Single-Week U.S. Album Sales Record '25' has already sold at least 2.433 million in slightly more than three days. Itβs confirmed. Adeleβs 25 has broken the single-week U.S. album sales record, according to Nielsen Music. After processing the first sales reports from Monday, Nov. 23, the album has already sold at least 2,433,000 in pure album sales in slightly more than three days. That sum beats the single-week record for an album since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991, set by *NSYNCβs No Strings Attached, when it debuted with 2,416,000 in the week ending March 26, 2000. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6776941/adele-breaks-album-sales-record-single-week-nsync

^ Dang, so she sold at least 133k on day 4, hopefully we'll get a proper figure today.
Day 1: 900k+ Day 2: 1.9 million Day 3: 2.3 million (+400k) Day 4 (so far): 2.433 million (+133k)
I think she's hit 2.5 million in 4 days, just need the the rest of the sales data to be processed. Can't believe she beat their record in just 4 days!

I was a bit worried she would fall short, so I'm glad she's already surpassed the record.
Crazy achievement -- really don't know what to say. An album selling this much in its first week.

133k is a drop in the bucket for her overall total - yet it alone is a high total for the average #1 album nowadays...

Two random thoughts:
1) It still kind of floors me that so many of the million-week sellers were in 2000 (six), particularly given the overlap in fanbases for most of those acts. Really shows what an album buying public we had back then.
2) One thing I love about Adele breaking the record is that she's almost doing it on the same terms as *NSYNC As well (6 days instead of 7). Granted there will be some digital sales and a few retailers open on Thanksgiving, but I don't anticipate Adele selling much on Thanksgiving day itself. I can't even imagine what her sales would have been like had if she had 7 full days to dominate.
since we're playing the guessing game I will lowball and say 6 to 6.5 million by year end. I think she will cross 3 million this week and 1 million next. That is 4 million in just two weeks, so I can see why one might think she can do 7 to 8 million with another five - percentage wise, that would be somewhat proportionate to how previous big holiday sellers did after their debut week. I just think that at the level Adele is selling right out the gate, it's hard to say whether we should be relying on what we know of sales trends to predict the following weeks.

I wonder what the shipments look like for week 2. If 3.6 million physicals were shipped for release weak and she's sold over half of those, she could be 6x platinum if they certified right away, which they won't.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6776941/adele-breaks-album-sales-record-single-week-nsyncOfficial: Adele Breaks *NSYNC's Single-Week U.S. Album Sales RecordBy Keith Caulfield | November 24, 2015 10:23 AM EST '25' has already sold at least 2.433 million in slightly more than three days. Nielsen Music began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. Prior to 1991, there was no authoritative music sales tracking service in the U.S. and thus, it was mostly unknown how many copies of an album or song/single were sold in a single week. 25 was released on Nov. 20 through XL/Columbia Records. Yesterday (Nov. 23), Nielsen reported that 25 had sold at least 2.3 million copies in its first three days of release (through Nov. 22). With more than three days left in the sales tracking week (as it ends at the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 26), the sales figure for 25 will grow larger. Presently, industry forecasters suggest the album could finish the week with 2.9 million sold. Billboard is scheduled to report 25's debut week sales on Sunday, Nov. 29, once Nielsen has finished processing its weekly data.

With more than three days left in the sales tracking week (as it ends at the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 26), COB where exactly? Nielsen is based out of NYC. What does COB even mean in a 24/7 online economy?

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298671Tuesday, November 24, 2015 ADELE ON TRACK TO SELL 5 MILLION THIS YEARAdele looks set to sell a staggering 5 million copies of her new blockbuster, 25 (XL/Columbia), by the end of the year. Somewhere around 3m of that number is likely to sell in her gargantuan first week. The album has already surpassed the 2.4m first-week record set by NSYNC in 2000; what's more, Adele could well have as much as a 45% share of all albums sold. For comparison's sake, Taylor Swift sold 23% of all albums when 1989 bowed, while NSYNC's prior record-holder had a 15% share. Let's take a look at a week-by-week projection to see how she gets to 5m by new year's. Will Adele hold onto the #1 spot through December, or could new releases from Coldplay and Rihanna overtake her? Stay tuned.

The Coldplay release will be one to watch if they can reclaim their past glory and sell half a million in release week.

If Adele only sells 300k chart week of 12/10 it would definitely be a toss up. I'm not convinced she'll be that low by then though. Her NBC special is on 12/14 and should move a bunch of units.
