Justin Bieber earns his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new release Purpose debuts atop the tally. The set -- released Nov. 13 through SchoolBoy/Raymound Braun/Def Jam -- earned 582,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 19, according to Nielsen Music. That’s the largest weekly unit total for an album since the Billboard 200 began tracking popularity based on overall equivalent units earned in December of 2014. (It beats the debut week of Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which launched with 535,000 units.) Further, Purpose sold 522,000 in pure album sales -- Bieber’s largest sales week ever. It surpasses his previous high, logged with Believe sold 374,000 in its first week back in 2012. Purpose is the entertainer’s fifth straight set to open at No. 1, following Believe: Acoustic (in 2013), Believe (2012), Under the Mistletoe (2011) and Never Say Never: The Remixes (EP) (2011).


Bieber leads a very busy week on the Billboard 200, where a near-record eight albums debut in the top 10. It’s only the fourth time in chart history we’ve had eight debuts in the region. It last happened on the list dated May 21, 2011. Before that, it occurred on Dec. 4, 2010 and Oct. 17, 2009.



Behind Bieber on the new Billboard 200 is the also-arriving One Direction, which launches at No. 2 with Made In the A.M. (459,000 units; 402,000 in pure album sales). Impressively, this week marks the first time two albums have sold at least 400,000 in the same week since Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed a Dream and Alicia Keys’ The Element of Freedom sold 661,000 and 417,000, respectively, in the week ending Dec. 20, 2009. Further, the Bieber/One Direction combo is the first time two debuting albums sold more than 400,000 in the same frame since Kanye West’s Graduation and 50 Cent’s Curtis opened with 957,000 and 691,000 in the week ending Sept. 16, 2007.

A near-record eight debuts arrive in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Dec. 5), led by Justin Bieber’s Purpose at No. 1 and One Direction's Made in the A.M. at No. 2.

It’s only the fourth time in chart history we’ve had eight debuts in the region. It last happened on the list dated May 21, 2011. Before that, it occurred on Dec. 4, 2010 and Oct. 17, 2009.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Dec. 5-dated chart (where Bieber is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Also starting in the top 10: Logic’s The Incredible True Story (No. 3), Jeezy’s Church In These Streets (No. 4), Chris Young’s I’m Comin’ Over (No. 5), Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Letters From the Labyrinth (No. 7), Alessia Cara’s Know-It-All (No. 9) and Kirk Franklin’s Losing My Religion (No. 10).

For One Direction, Made In the A.M. gives the vocal quartet its fifth straight album to debut in the top two of the chart, following four consecutive No. 1 albums. The new set launches with 459,000 in equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 19, according to Nielsen Music (of which 402,000 are in pure album sales). That sales start surpasses the bow of the group’s last album, 2014’s Four, which entered the list with 387,000 sold.

Rapper Logic launches at No. 3 on the new Billboard 200 with The Incredible True Story (135,000 units; 118,000 in album sales). It’s Logic’s best rank yet on the chart, and his highest sales frame. (He previously hit the top 10 with Under Pressure in 2014, which debuted and peaked at No. 4).

Jeezy jumps onto the new Billboard 200 at No. 4 with Church In These Streets (107,000 units; 98,000 in album sales). It’s his seventh consecutive top 10 album (his entire chart history), and follows the No. 2-peaking Seen In All: The Autobiography in 2014.

Country singer Chris Young debuts at No. 5 with I’m Comin’ Over (65,000 units; 57,000 in album sales). It’s the second-largest sales week for Young, as only the debut of his 2011 album Neon (73,000) was bigger.

The new album’s title track recently gave Young his sixth No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart (dated Nov. 28). It’s his first chart-topper on the list since 2012’s “You” (Feb. 11, 2012).

Last week’s No. 1, Chris Stapleton’s Traveller, falls to No. 6 with 53,000 units (down 57 percent).

Trans-Siberian Orchestra collects its third top 10 album as Letters From the Labyrinth starts at No. 7 with 46,000 units (nearly all from pure album sales). The act also hit the region with Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night) (EP) in 2012 (No. 9) and Night Castle in 2009 (No. 5).

The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness drops 4-8 with 43,000 units (down 8 percent).

Nearly the end of the top 10, Alessia Cara’s debut full-length album Know-It-All arrives at No. 9 with 36,000 units (22,000 in pure album sales). The album was led by her hit single “Here,” which has so-far peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Rounding out the top 10 is gospel superstar Kirk Franklin with his new album Losing My Religion, which debuts at No. 10 with 35,000 units (33,000 in album sales). It’s the fifth top 10 effort for Franklin, who last hit the chart in 2011 with the No. 5-peaking Hello Fear.

Logic and Jeezy compete for top-selling Rap album.

Multiple projects were released November 13. Justin Bieber claims the top-selling project on Billboard's Top 200 chart with his Purpose album, which sold 648,711 units. Logic, Jeezy, Kirk Franklin and Alessia Cara all debut in the Top 10. Fetty Wap's self-titled LP falls out of the Top 10 for the first time in its eight weeks on the chart. Redman's Mudface debuts at #146 on the chart with 4,555 album equivalent units.

Logic's Incredible First-Week Sales

Logic's The Incredible True Story debuts at #3 on the chart, selling 135,096 units and seeing more than 19 million streams. It is the highest-selling Rap album. The Maryland emcees's debut LP, Under Pressure, landed at the #4 spot with 72,501 units last year. It was released the same week as T.I.'s Paperwork.

Jeezy Takes The Chart To Church

Jeezy's latest project, Church In These Streets, lands at #4 on the chart. It moved 107,316 total units and sold 98,380 albums. Last year, Seen It All, his first album as "Jeezy" reached the #2 spot. The Atlanta rapper has had two #1 albums in his decade-long career: 2006's The Inspiration and 2008's The Recession.

Ty Dolla $ign Debuts On The List

Ty Dolla $ign's Free TC sells 31,274 album equivalent units, enough for the #14 spot on the chart. The project's lead single, "Blase" with Future and Rae Sremmurd is #27 on the R&B and Hip Hop single sales. The Los Angeles artist also enlisted Kanye West, Diddy, Kendrick Lamar, Jagged Edge and Wiz Khalifa for the LP that honors his brother.

Chris Young scores the first #1 album of his career with "I'm Comin' Over" while Chris Stapleton remains a sales sensation as well.

Chris Young has finally earned his first chart-topping album with I'm Comin' Over, his fifth album. At #2 this week is Chris Stapleton's Traveller, an album which has now scanned nearly 389k to date and looks like a solid bet to hit Gold very, very soon. Eric Church's Mr. Misunderstood is at #3 with 158k to date while Carrie Underwood's "Storyteller" is at #4 with nearly 265k scanned. Rounding out the Top 5 is Tim McGraw's "Damn Country Music," which has scanned nearly 58k to date.

Top Ten Recap
Sitting at #6 is Luke Bryan's Kill The Lights with 706k scanned to date. Thomas Rhett's at #7 with Tangled Up while Sam Hunt's Montevallo has moved nearly 850k to sit at #8. At #9 is Blake Shelton with his latest Greatest hits, Reloaded: 20 #1 Hits. Rounding out the Top 10 is Don Henley's Cass County, an album which has moved 177k to date.

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

While the list of debuts is much shorter than it was a month ago, they always have some heavy hitters in there. This week, the debuts are spearheaded by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a band that, around this time of year, always manages to reach an audience of metal lovers and Christmas lovers (though this album isn’t a Christmas rock opera). Granted, both groups will have people who probably have never listened to Savatage a day in their life but damn that TSO version of “Carol of the Bells” still kicks ass. For everyone else, Intronaut and Swallow The Sun is sure to satisfy.
