To be fair, it received zero promotion outside of Radio airplay. The Weeknd is THAT big that he need no backing in other metrics for Radio to play him. Once promo kicks in, it shall easily climbs up.

How Adele's '25' Performed on Radio Over the Weekend

It’s well-established that radio rarely finds its own hits these days, even from a superstar album.

Finding the next single was once standard procedure, especially for top 40 radio. When Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation was released, PDs quickly looked beyond the title track, then a single, to find “Escapade.” But over the last decade, PDs have been reluctant to deviate from “playing the hits” or tangling with label plans. Programmers found Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” on Teenage Dream, but backed off until it could become an official release. A similar pattern emerged with Perry’s “Dark Horse,” which eventually became the only other consensus hit from her last project, after kickoff single “Roar.”

With that in mind, it is obviously significant that North American programmers -- in all formats -- gave more than 1,200 spins to songs from Adele’s 25 over the first three days of its release (on Nov. 20), according to Nielsen BDSRadio. All ten songs from the album got some airplay, from just under 52 spins for the least-played track to more than 300 for the most-played.

Those spins, however, must be compared to the 33,854 spins that “Hello” received last week. Even when you consider that those plays took place over seven days, three days’ worth of those would be upwards of 14,000. In fact, the second- through fifth-most-played Adele songs last week were singles from 21, starting with “Rolling In The Deep” (1,067 spins).

At this writing, no second single from the album has been decided, but the song with the most early airplay is “When We Were Young,” a Tobias Jesso Jr., collaboration. That ballad, reminiscent of “Someone Like You,” got double-digit spins in its first few days at Cox’s WAPE Jacksonville (19x) and WBLI Long Island, N.Y., as well as Adult Top 40 CHUM Toronto (17). It’s the only song so far to get double-digit spins at more than one station.

If the radio momentum for “When We Were Young” continues, it also represents a significant change from a time when the most-likely radio strategy would have been to find one of the album’s more uptempo cuts to compliment the equally stately “Hello.” The midtempo “Water Under the Bridge” is the next-most-spun track (221 spins), with no more than six spins in three days from any one station, in this case WBMX (Mix 104.1) Boston.

The most seemingly calculated radio song, “Send My Love (To Your New Lover),” produced and co-written by Max Martin & Shellback, is the next most-played (160 spins). “Send My Love” got 10 spins in three days from Sirius XM’s triple-A format, The Spectrum, as well as seven spins from top 40 powerhouse KIIS Los Angeles. Only the handful of double-digit spins that went to those two titles suggest any song going in to actual rotation.

The 4-5 spins that most songs got at the maximum from any one station suggest that stations either rotated a wide variety of cuts or played the album in its entirety. At Summit Media’s Honolulu stations, rhythmic top 40 KPHW (Power 104.3) played the album in its entirety last Friday (20), then a different track at :25 past the hour, “25 At 25.” Sister AC KRTR (Krater 96.3) played a different track at the top of each hour.

Yeah there's at least 5 with those 4 and Remedy that have strong single potential imo.

With the proper order (i.e. no ballad overkill, but using initial hype well for those that wouldn't do as well later) they can take this album well up to about spring/summer 2017.

I'm pretty much expecting When We Were Young and Send My Love to be the next 2 (SML was in contention to be the lead single), and I hope they send the former first because it wouldn't perform as strongly much later.

What type of promotion do you mean? I'll admit a video hasn't come out yet, but I couldn't find when that will happen. And why would they start other promotion several weeks after receiving airplay? Usually it's the other way around. (I actually like this song, but it's been on power rotation where I live so I'm already getting kind of tired of it)

I've heard WUTB twice in car during past 24 hours on Sirius Pulse - so I'm assuming they are playing a lot since I haven't been driving that much. I do think they should rethink WWWY as second single - it truly pales to Hello as a ballad (not saying it isn't good, but Hello is setting a REALLY high bar). I agree they should opt for an uptempo 2nd single - that would more easily fit into Pop playlists (while keeping 'Hello,' which I'm assuming is continuing great call-out). Otherwise, I could see radio avoiding two ballads at same time (because Hello will continue to get high spins) and WWWY will be in and out like "Unconditionally." The good thing about ADELE's music is that it is more timeless and therefore holding certain songs is more of an option than perhaps for other projects.

Yes, it seems so, although sometimes radio does change which album tracks it prefers over time. For example with NIcki's recent album Feeling Myself got the most airplay of the album tracks the first couple of weeks but then later it slowed down and Truffle Butter overtook (and eventually became the single).

Also there are some cases like Jay-Z - FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt or Drake/The Weeknd - Crew Love where they get significant airplay for a while but never become singles. So nothing is ever 100% set in stone when it comes to things like this.

Another case of the bad timing...quite a few this year, it seems (i.e. Thinking Out Loud and Hotline Bling peaking at #2 for a long time, Can't Feel My Face getting less weeks at #1 than it could have when it was neck and neck with Cheerleader, etc.)

If she had released Hello a bit later, she would quite possibly snag that record, as well as be practically guaranteed 2016 year-end #1 (which is now much less likely due to the fact that its peak weeks were not in 2016, but I guess it is still possible if it has a chart run similar to that of Uptown Funk). Timing really does play a key role in chart performance...

The song and the album are shattering several statistical records, the fact that there are some statistical records that won't be broken this time, maybe not a bad thing. Adele will probably get those the next time. ;)

Even if it weren't this time of year, Hello still would have a hard time breaking the airplay audience record because she'd be lacking in urban and rhythmic, or even if she did manage to rank highly on those formats, it would likely be a little later than at pop and AC, and not closer together as for songs like Blurred Lines and Happy.
