Random: Since Hallelujah keeps being sung on The Voice and American Idol, and seems to sell a lot, and debut on the Hot 100 for at least a week. It made me wonder what song has been 'remade' the most and how many times has it hit the Hot 100? Thoughts anyone? If you narrow the search down to songs that reached the TOP 40 on Billboard's Hot 100, I found six titles that charted four times. EDIT: eight, thx WotUNeed "BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO" (Neil Sedaka/Howard Greenfield) Neil Sedaka [#1, 1962] Lenny Welch [#34, 1970] (slow version) Patridge Family [#24, 1972] Neil Sedaka [#8, 1976] (slow version) "CUPID" (Sam Cooke) Sam Cooke [#17, 1961] Johnny Nash [#39, 1970] Tony Orlando & Dawn [#22, 1976] Spinners [#4, 1980] medley with "I've Loved You For A Long Time" "EVERLASTING LOVE" (Buzz Cayden/Mac Gayden) Robert Knight [#13, 1967] Carl Carlton [#6, 1974] Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet [#32, 1981] Gloria Estefan [#27, 1995] "LET IT BE ME" (Gilbert Becaud/Pierre Delanoe/Manny Curtis) Everly Brothers [#7, 1960] Betty Everett & Jerry Butler [#5, 1964] Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell [#36, 1969] Willie Nelson [#40, 1982] "LOOK FOR A STAR" (Tony Hatch) Billy Vaughn [#19, 1960] Deane Hawley [#29, 1960] Garry Miles [#16, 1960] Gary Mills [#26, 1960] "STAND BY ME" (Ben E. King/Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller) Ben E. King [#4, 1961 and #9/1986] Spyder Turner [#12, 1967] John Lennon [#20, 1975] Mickey Gilley [#22, 1980] "THE WAY YOU DO THE THINGS YOU DO" (Smokey Robinson/Robert Rogers) Temptations [#11, 1964] Rita Coolidge [#20, 1978] Daryl Hall & John Oates with David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks [#20, 1975] medley with "My Girl" UB40 [#6, 1990] "WHAT I'D SAY" (Ray Charles) Ray Charles [#6, 1959] Jerry Lee Lewis [#30, 1961] Bobby Darin [#24, 1962] Elvis Presley [#21, 1964]

If you narrow the search down to songs that reached the TOP 40 on Billboard's Hot 100, I found six titles that charted four times. You can add "Everlasting Love" to your four times in the top 40 list (Robert Knight, Carl Carlton, Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet, Gloria Estefan), as well as "Let It Be Me" (The Everly Brothers, Betty Everett & Jerry Butler, Glen Campbell & Bobbie Gentry, and Willie Nelson). As to the Hot 100, "Stand by Me", in addition to the four top forty versions, had charted versions by Earl Grant, David & Jimmy Ruffin, Maurice White, and 4 the Cause, for a total of eight. Even considering charted TV performances, I believe that'd be the song with the most instances of different versions hitting the Hot 100.
