So sad....on the airplay top 100 for the year, the highest solo female is at no. 36 (LMLYMI by Kelsea Ballerina) for the year. Simply embarrassing.

It's alienating... even for my rockier taste! It was pretty set that Lee Brice would end up at #1 and that all superstar releases would bomb due to their short(er) chart runs. The tragedy and irony behind the Billboard year end lists, s more that the casual chart watcher and in Country interested reader will take the ranking as a given and true reflection of the genre and don't challenge the result. And that was me not so long ago...

Their tabulation method needs some adjustment, I think. In what universe was "Run Away With You" a bigger hit than "Kick The Dust Up".

Keep in Mind, Run Away With You spent the entire year so it probably built up a lot more audience than Kick The Dust Up did which only spent what 14 weeks on the charts. The longer charting songs usually are the ones that do better.

I think they need to do something to their formula that assigns a higher value to peak positions, or count recurrent spins. That would give a more accurate reflection of the year's biggest hits, imo.

I usually do my own year end list (except for the past two years) and I do my own personal assessment on the singles of the year. It was great fun when I was a kid but haven't really got around to doing them the past two years. I would never put a song that peaked at #10 above a song that peaked at #1 though. If a song peaked at #10 but spent 46 weeks on the chart, I would naturally place it higher than let's say a song that peaked at #8 but only spent 26 weeks on the chart -- that seems fair since spending 46 weeks on the chart should garner some merit. Billboard and MB does theirs by shear numbers and tabulations though, so this causes some weird placings like "Kick The Dust Up" being outdone by "Run Away With You."

The way that they tabulate their year end chart doesn't really give an accurate reflection on the year's hits, imo.

But if you want an overall popularity contest that's what the Hot Country Songs is for. I think that it reflected what was most popular at radio, I disagree with this. Billboard's year-end charts are heavily skewed in favor of songs that spent forever on the chart, and in my opinion, the songs that rise quickly and spend 2-3 weeks at #1 are bigger hits. Mediabase's year-end chart is heavily skewed in favor of songs that were released early in the chart year (because MB counts recurrent spins) which is a pretty big flaw as well. I suppose you can make the argument that Billboard's year-end airplay chart reflects what radio played the most (aka, what was most popular with radio), but it certainly doesn't reflect what the biggest hits were. Those were easily songs like ZBB's "Homegrown", Blake's "Sangria", LBT's "Girl Crush", Sam's "Take Your Time", etc. Anyway, I don't take either trade's year-end charts seriously. I used to compile my own points-based chart (based on peak positions, as someguy suggested Billboard should do) but I no longer have the time to do so.

Yes, this is great stuff. I took it one step further and summed up the AIs for just these top 100, and if that means anything, and I think it does, as all of these were Top 5 or better appearances, you would be hard pressed to convince me that the top 10 songs of the year were anything other than: 1. I'm Comin' Over - Chris Young 2. Save It For a Rainy Day - Kenny Chesney 3. Tonight Looks Good On You - Jason Aldean 4. I See You - Luke Bryan 5. Gonna - Blake Shelton 6. Talladega - Eric Church 7. Let Me See Ya Girl - Cole Swindell 8. Sangria - Blake Shelton 9. Lose My Mind - Brett Eldredge 10. Strip It Down - Luke Bryan This list passes the gut check test for me as far as my memories of the year go. That captures the times when these songs were just killing it on the chart. I'm not sure of the exact order but these songs were all pretty huge. What do y'all think?
