box office estimates have always been adjusted for inflation never mind when older movies are re released in theaters for significant anniversaries like for example in fall 2017 if Warner Brothers puts Cool Hand Luke back in theaters for it's 50th anniversary and gives some of the proceeds to charity and did the same for Rachel Rachel the following summer. albums are a different art form completely

So Chris was #2 after all, just on the album sales chart. There was no chance of him competing with Bieber with TEA/SEA added in, but he overperformed projections by quite a bit. Maybe all that ranting and raving actually worked?

What else can be said about Adele that hasn't already been said? Just amazing. And she bookends the top 10 again.

1) Generally we do not expect people to buy multiple copies of a CD within an album cycle, other than some overzealous stans. You could listen to the album a million times, or only one time, but the label got all they could have wanted out of you as soon as you bought it. On the other hand, it is very common for people to go see a blockbuster movie more than once during its run in the theaters - in fact, repeat moviegoers might be its own measure of how loved the blockbuster truly is, b/c people aren't going back to see a movie that they merely liked or were underwhelmed by. I think streaming gets at this kind of 'repeat enjoyment' measurement for music, but we are still a long way away from streaming being the only way people consume music.

2) You can't 'share' the movie going experience via one purchase - that is, I can buy one copy of 25 that my whole family can listen to when they please, but if we all wanted to see TFA we would have to go together and buy our own tickets.

3) While albums are regularly discounted to encourage sales, ticket prices rarely receive such treatment. Discounts are limited to matinee prices and a couple bucks off for students and senior citizens, but these are relatively small and never budge. For whatever reason, music (even when it was selling well) was always a harder sell than movies were...just using Born This Way as an example, the million it sold in its first week surely had less revenue than the million+ weeks that Taylor has had, due to the Amazon discount on the first couple of days. So for labels, the 1 album = 1 person theory is the better bragging point to quantify how well a particular album has done, but you can't really say 1 ticket = 1 person - and even if you could, a multi-hundred million or billion-dollar figure is so much more impressive than "75 million tickets" or "15 to 30 million people came to see this movie a lot." If anything, album sales would be most comparable to movie DVD sales (although, again, DVDs sell better than albums these days).

In general salaries are a small part of most movie budgets, especially since a lot of the bigger stars now negotiate for a percent of the profits. And really, few big movies even use the top paid stars (see the Avengers movies, Jurassic World, etc).

Profit is a bit of a different story; if you're losing money on a $200 million grossing project that indicates a problem with controlling your expenses, but the project itself clearly did well. (Also, I know movie studios have been accused of playing shell games with their 'profits' and 'losses' sometimes for accounting purposes, and we probably wouldn't feel so sorry for these labels' dwindling album sales if we could see how much money they're still raking in. So there is a disincentive for revealing pure profit.)

As for 25, I'm going to guess 500k this week.

Chris Brown Receives Chart Royalty

Chris Brown's Royalty album debuts at #3. The project sold 184,454 album equivalent units and was streamed more than 17 million times. Royalty, which is named after Brown's daughter, includes the singles, "Liquor" and "Back to Sleep." The Virginia singer has had two #1 albums in his career, 2011's F.A.M.E. and 2012's Fortune.

Pusha T Reigns With "King Push" Prelude

Pusha T debuts at #20 with King Push - Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude. The project sold 45,297 album equivalent units and was streamed more than six million times. This album precedes King Push. Pusha T's debut album, My Name Is My Name, reached the #4 position upon its release in 2013.

The Weeknd Continues Sales Madness

The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness remains in the Top 10, landing at #9 on this week's chart. The album has spent 17 weeks on the chart and grew 14 percent this week after spending a week at the #10 spot. The project is bolstered by three singles in the Top 15 on the Digital Genre R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

Any guesses on whether '25' will have higher than normal returns? It's a bit of a wildcard because the physical component is so big. I'm sure there were plenty of people who received it as gift and: 1) already own it; 2) received duplicate copies of it, etc. But I'm hardly concerned about '25's' performance during the next few weeks with Grammys and Valentine's Day coming up, not to mention a slight bump (or at least keeping it steady as WWWY starts hitting major airplay numbers).

On the most recent Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Jan. 9, but reflecting data for the week ending Dec. 24), Adele’s 25 continued to lead while Chris Brown’s Royalty earned the week’s highest debut. In addition, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens soundtrack blasted in at No. 5.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the chart:

— Foo Fighters, Greatest Hits – No. 159 – The rock band’s best-of collection returns to the list at No. 159, one week after the album surpassed 1 million in U.S. sales. It’s the sixth million-selling album for the group.

Greatest Hits jumped past the million mark in the week ending Dec. 17 with 3,000 sold, and shifts another 6,000 in the newest week. Its total sales stand at 1,009,000.

Foo Fighters have also scored million-selling albums with The Colour and the Shape (1.9 million), In Your Honor (1.5 million), One By One (1.4 million), There Is Nothing Left To Lose (1.3 million) and their self-titled debut (1.3 million).

— Adele, 21 – No. 10 – While Adele’s 25 hangs out at No. 1 for a fifth straight week, her previous album, 21, continues to perform strongly. The former No. 1 set, which holds at No. 10, collects its 84th nonconsecutive week in the top 10. That staggering sum ties the album with Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. for the second-most weeks in the region since 1963 (when the Billboard 200 combined its separate stereo and mono album charts into one all encompassing tally). In that span of time, only The Sound of Music film soundtrack accumulated more weeks in the top 10, with 109.

— Ariana Grande, Christmas & Chill (EP) – No. 34 – The pop star’s surprise holiday effort, Christmas & Chill, bows at No. 34 with 32,000 units (27,000 in pure album sales). The digital-exclusive set also debuts at No. 3 on Holiday Albums and No. 7 on Digital Albums.

Christmas & Chill is Grande’s second holiday effort, following Christmas Kisses in 2013. While the latter title didn’t reach any of Billboard’s charts, its four songs -- which were each released in consecutive weeks late that year -- all charted in the top five of the Holiday Digital Songs list. To date, Christmas Kisses has sold 15,000 while its quartet of tunes have moved a combined 235,000 downloads.

— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Hamilton: An American Musical – No. 37 – Thanks to a deep price cut in the Google Play store, the cast recording of Hamilton scores a 54 percent sales increase (rising to 23,000 sold for the week). It also climbs 41-37 on the chart, with 28,000 total units. During the tracking week, Google sold the title for just $1.99 for multiple days.

— The Braxtons, Braxton Family Christmas – No. 144 – Nineteen years after The Braxtons last charted on the Billboard 200, the family group returns to the list with its Braxton Family Christmas album (a debut at No. 144). The Christmas album is in its eighth week of release — and has charted on some of Billboard’s other genre-specific tallies — but collects its first week on the overall Billboard 200 (and with its best sales week yet: 8,000 sold). The seasonal effort has sold 21,000 to date.

Braxton Family Christmas is the second album from the sister act, which previously charted with So Many Ways back in 1996. Back then, the group was a trio (Trina, Tamar and Towanda Braxton), and saw So Many Ways peak at No. 113 on the Billboard 200. On the new album, the trio becomes a quintet, as Toni and Traci Braxton join their three sisters.

An assist for this record would go to the death of Michael Jackson in allowing this to occur, which Billboard does not acknowledge or perhaps they forgot, in any case:

'Thriller' which spent 78 weeks on the Billboard 200 top 10, logged 13 weeks in the top 10 on the now defunct Comprehensive chart and the 'Number Ones' album spent 6 weeks at number one on that chart as well. Both albums charted on the catalog chart during this time but not the Billboard 200 due to their age. These two albums helped change the rules regarding age criteria for the Billboard 200 into what they are today.

Agreed, if the follow-up singles resonate closely the way they did on '21,' I see this being in the Top 5 the entire year probably will little effort. (I'd say top 3, but new releases will push it down - similar to '1989.') Like Taylor, ADELE proves that the right music will get people to buy in massive quantities over a long period of time.

Beyoncé’s debut solo album Dangerously In Love has now sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music.

The effort, released in 2003, sold just over 2,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 24, bringing its cumulative total across the 5 million mark. It remains Beyoncé’s best-selling solo effort.

Dangerously In Love opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and was the first of so-far five No. 1 albums for the diva. All of her full-length studio efforts have reached the top slot, and all of them have sold at least a million copies: B’Day (released in 2006, 3.41 million sold), I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008, 3.2 million), 4 (2011, 1.5 million) and her self-titled album (2013; 2.3 million). So far, Beyoncé has sold 16 million solo albums in the U.S.

In addition, Beyonce has visited the top of the Billboard 200 and sold millions as part of Destiny’s Child. The group notched two No. 1s with Survivor and the greatest hits collection #1s. Destiny’s Child has four million-selling albums (including their biggest: The Writing’s On the Wall, with 6.4 million), while their total album sales stand at 17.5 million.

Kinda puts things in perspective. Beyonce, who is an undisputed cultural icon and one of the biggest pop stars in the world over the last 15 years, has just cleared 5 million sales with her best selling album being available for 12 years. Adele did that in less than 3 weeks.

Yeah, to me Beyonce's album sales total have always been somewhat weak (or maybe mediocre is a better word). Considering the huge singles off her solo debut, all of the promotion/performances, and the much healthier sales climate, the fact that it's only just now passing 5 million copies sold is fairly middling. Beyonce is undoubtedly a big star/icon, but that hasn't necessarily translated into sales.

But what was the rule when Born in the USA was charting? I remember albums by Pink Floyd and Carole King hanging around the albums chart forever. I don't think the Pop Catalog Albums chart premiered until around the same time Soundscan came around. I don't think Born in the USA had any different rules around it than 21 has had.

She's sold close to 35 million albums between her solo work and DC3. I doubt she's too sad about Adele selling 20 million.
