Kworb 2016/01/02 *** = dropped or added a format 1. ADELE - Hello: 222.300 (+5.135) Where is this gaining so much audience? I know the holiday freeze is over, but AC isn't that huge of a format anymore. I can't imagine it's making up all that difference from "Hello" falling at Top 40. AC. She gained over 3.2 million AI there today. A week ago today was the Christmas airplay update (airplay updates are always for the day before), hence the huge update. It also gained well on HAC/Urban AC. And although AC is a small format, songs usually end up going from 2-4 million AI to 15-20 million AI the week after Christmas, as they take all the Christmas songs out of the playlist kworb.net/radio/Things will return to normal on AC from tomorrow. So "Hello" won't be gaining anywhere near as much as it has recently.

"One Sweet Day" is among Mariah's top 10 songs on Spotify and since I keep track of her VEVO views monthly, I can also tell you the music video is among the top 10 gainers every month. It's her 14th most watched video. Wow! Her 14th most watched video! So impressive for a 16-week chart topper! I'm bedazzled!

So Out Of The Woods. Flop or MAJOR flop? Either way, this is the end of the 1989 era. Why are you predicting a flop already? It has not gone to radio. The video just debuted. Too early to tell...

Polls and opinions of that type are pretty subjective too. So, that goes back to my comment about whose memory are we talking about? One Sweet Day is 20 years old. Teenagers who were not alive during this song's heyday will give a different answer than someone older Mariah "superfans" will give different answers than music fans who like Mariah but don't live and die by every move she makes. Ok, but if teenagers don't know the song, it's not because it's old but because it faded. I bet a lot of teenagers know Fantasy, Always Be My Baby or All I Want for Christmas is You, and all of these are as old as OSD.

A person over thirty will have a different memory of the song than someone who has only read about it on a web page. Teenagers are less likely to be aware of or even care about older songs that Mom & Dad may have listened to

Great sales for "Hello" - should have no trouble passing 6 million by the end of 2016 at least. Hope "When We Were Young" will manage to do 4 million+ this year too.

So you're saying that teenagers won't know any Mariah song from the 90s aside All I Want for Christmas? Does that mean Mariah's songs haven't aged well? I'm pretty sure a lot of teenagers would be familiar with Black or White, I Will Always Love You, You Oughta Know or No Scrubs, all from the 90s.

Gary's post indicates that teenagers don't listen to old music at all which is clearly false. They get to know Michael Jackson, Beatles, Mariah, Madonna etc just like we did. Not in the age of 12 but by the time they're 20 for sure.
Of course there are people who don't listen to music at all.

There are always counter examples of course. Teens who listen to pop music and are aware of who the current stars are will know the songs that have received the recent exposure on pop radio. They may think songs sound familiar when you play it for them but they may not know the name. People who did not live through 'One Sweet Day' are less likely to know of its impact than someone who did live through it.
So as I said before different age groups will give different responses to how they feel about One Sweet Day
I am sure someone who disagrees with this post will be able to say otherwise. However, Let's face it teens who listen to pop radio get exposed to the current music from the current stars. This means they are less likely to hear songs from Mariah or Madonna or know the names of the older songs.

This means they are less likely to hear songs from Mariah or Madonna or know the names of the older songs. Top 40 and other "current" formats certainly don't play recurrent songs the way more adult formats like AC do, so to that extent the point is valid. But we also talk on here about how radio is getting antiquated, so to act like teens don't know older music because their radio formats don't play it is a bit contradictory. Between youtube, movies, streaming services, TV shows, etc. they hear older songs. I work in a high school and am constantly amazed at the music my students know. They were singing Elton John's "Rocket Man" a few weeks back. When I was out NYE "Emotions" was played and people were singing along, though that was people in their 20s.

Is there a website where you can view the back issues of Billboard from 2012 onwards since Google Books only has issues up until 2011?

It's not a great sign. 5.6 million people already own the song from buying the 1989 album. I would not expect a surge. I don't expect it to be a big hit. I don't expect it to flop either.

I want to stress that I obviously don't speak for all teenagers, however I'm 20 and maybe can give some insight into how well Mariahs music is known. I'm going to try to be as modest as possible and also keep in mind that since I just recently turned 20 I ll be on the higher end of things.
Right off the bat let's get its out of the way that I have yet to have a friend that doesn't know all I want for Christmas is you. That's easy
Beautiful is hit and Miss with my friends however pretty much everyone remembers obsessed if it comes on the radio. And for us a "throwback" would be we belong together and shake it off . I've never actually heard don't forget about us in the car with friends so i have no idea if it's still remembered .
In my area fantasy and always be my baby seem to get the most recurrent player out of her older hits , and my friends tend to know its Mariah and pretend to know the words getting a few right here and there .
The only other Mariah song I hear semi often on radio here is emotions and my friends typically just can tell its Mariah but don't know the actual song .
I've never once heard one sweet day on the radio and to be completely honest I don't think I even know how the song goes , I don't think it ever connected with my age group .
So to sum it's all up id say the older teens remember : - all I want for Christmas is you , obsessed , we belong together , shake it off Kind of remember : - beautiful RecogNize : - always be my baby and fantasy
For comparison sake let's look at Madonna.
4 minutes is the one we all know . Everything after that I seem to be the only one who knows she's still has some chart success :/
Some friends know : music, hung up , like a prayer , like a virgin
Lastly we all kinda know vogue when we hear it and know adults always laugh when it comes on and start doing hand dancing .
Ps some of us know me against the music ;)

Ps some of us know me against the music ;) Oh I wish they had chosen a bit better song LOL I think Frozen is pretty known for a Madonna song but that could be only where I live. And I played Ray of Light in the club last year and people seemed to remember it very well.
