I was listening to "Stay a Little Longer" by Brothers Osborne and one thing I thought about was how well it has done despite being fairly difficult to sing along with. I seem to have trouble remembering all of the lyrics in order when it gets to the b-section and chorus. What are some other songs that you have had difficulty singing along with? One obvious one for me was always "Sold (the Grundy County Auction)" by John Michael Montgomery. I take pride in being able to sing it but it took a lot of practice!

One obvious one for me was always "Sold (the Grundy County Auction)" by John Michael Montgomery. I take pride in being able to sing it but it took a lot of practice! I know every word to "Sold"...and "No News" by Lonestar...along with "I Try To Think About Elvis"/"Blame It On Your Heart" by Patty Loveless. :) If we're talking about faced paced lyrics, then "Nothin' To Lose" by Josh Gracin comes to mind. I usually have no problem with those myself. If you listen to it enough times, it comes pretty natural. The only ones I have some trouble with are those Martina/Carrie belt-songs, since even though I think I have a passable voice (at least I think I do, lol), there's no way in heck I could ever dream hitting the notes in "Something In The Water", "Blown Away", "Whatever You Say" or "How Far"...though I don't particularly care for that last one, lol.

^yeah, me neither! I just sing harmony on those!
This could be for any reason: fast lyrics ("Ain't Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up" maybe?), range, melody, whatever.

For me the Martina/Carrie belt songs are my bread and butter! Lol I have a low voice (basically the exact same range as Josh Turner), so female songs are almost always perfect for me if I sing them an octave lower. And the lower-voiced males like Josh, Trace Adkins, Chris Young, etc. are usually perfect for me (although Chris has a VERY strong high range... There is usually at least one note in each of his songs that I struggle with).
I also have no trouble at all with with huge sustained notes that Martina puts at the end of "A Broken Wing", "Whatever You Say", and "Anyway", or like the middle of "There You Are". Or even Carrie's "Jesus, Take The Wheel", "Just A Dream", etc. If you watch videos of people covering those songs, it seems that NOBODY can sustain the notes like Martina and Carrie, which is very amusing :) I guess I must just have strong lungs from being a Martina fan for so long, as well as growing up playing the baritone sax. Even "Ain't Goin' Down Til The Sun Comes Up", where it seems like Garth breathes about 5 times in the entire song, is just fine for me, although it is definitely a challenging song.
The songs I have the most trouble with are the tenors and higher-voiced baritones, such as Tim McGraw. The verses will usually be too low to sound good an octave lower, but then the choruses get way too high for me sing well.
However, my range is improving! George Strait used to be too high for me, and now I can nail basically any of his songs (singles AND album tracks). I will never be able to touch someone like Gary LeVox or Vince Gill though (although their voices are so high that their songs are basically perfect an octave lower anyway :) )

Usually when a song reaches the Top 20, I know the lyrics like the back of my hand. Yet after hearing it so many times, I still can't sing along to Mr. Misunderstood.

I'm a bit of a mushmouth, but I can actually do "Nothin' to Lose". And "Country Rock Star", also from Marcel's "ludicrous speed" style of songwriting. But not "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies.
I have a hard time with Rascal Flatts songs because of how high-pitched and warbly Gary can get. I'm a low tenor, and I'm pretty sure I can sing "What Hurts the Most" TWO octaves lower than Gary. And don't get me started on the second key change of "Summer Nights", where even HE is too high for his range. However, I can screech out "BOB THAT HEAD!!!!!!" like a pro.
I would say "Would You Go with Me" is a tricky sing-along because of how wide a range it has. The note on "If we rolled from town to town and never shut it down" is a basso-profundo note, whereas the chorus is falsetto, and not many people can do both.
"Unbelieveable" by Diamond Rio has both a huge range AND a very fast pace, and it's pretty tricky for me.

Chris Young's "Tomorrow" comes to mind. Fine lyrics and vocals, but the weak melody makes me forget the words every time.

Likewise with me and nearly any Casey Beathard-written song in the past decade. It took me FOREVER to remember ANYthing from "Just Fishin'". I kept going "wait, what song is this again?" every single time I heard it until it peaked. The hamfisted production didn't help.

I think that's one reason why I have a little trouble with "Stay a Little Longer". I really like the song but it does have some repetitive melodic elements. By contrast, take "The Man In Love With You" from George Strait. This song is one of the more complex country songs melodically and harmonically that I know. But it doesn't give me any trouble at all. Same with several of George's from that period (Chill of an Early Fall, You're Something Special to Me, So Much Like My Dad). MAN THOSE ARE ALL GREAT SONGS! But if you really want to challenge yourself, pull out the "Stardust" album and sing the Great American Songbook with Willie. Somewhere along the way, American pop music made a major shift from harmonic and melodic complexity to rhythmic complexity. Seems like these days maybe they've just abandoned complexity entirely!

It's already been mentioned but "Ain't Goin' Down 'Til the Sun Comes Up" gets me every time. I've been listening to Garth Brooks singles for as long as I can remember, and I know all the words to the song, but always manage to flub it in short order.

I'd Love To Lay You Down was difficult at first, but over the years, I've learned to sing it differently. No problems now, but still can not sound like Twitty.

"What A Way (To Wanna Be Be)" - Shania Twain (off of Up!). I literally have listened to that song about five hundred times in full and the other day, I went back to the booklet and went OHHHH that's what she's saying. It's Shania and I was six or seven when the album came out, so I guess I made up my own lyrics and they stuck. Then, the other day I was singing something completely different. She sings it at such a rapid pace and the words seem meshed together.

I have trouble sometimes with "Swimming in Champagne" by Eric Heatherly. It's in 7/8, so the beats fall in very odd spots. One of very few country songs I can think of with such an unusual time signature.

It's more triplet-like: 1-2-3 4-5-6 7 / 1-2-3 4-5-6 7 / etc.
