The album earned 116,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Jan. 28, according to Nielsen Music (down 21 percent). The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 13, 2016-dated chart (where Adele returns to at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Feb. 2. In the latest tracking week, 25 sold another 97,000 in pure album sales (down 20 percent), which brings its cumulative sum to 7.94 million in the U.S. It is likely 25 will reach 8 million sold in the next week. Rock band Megadeth notches the chart’s highest debut as is Dystopia bows at No. 3 with 49,000 units ( 48,000 in pure album sales). It’s the highest charting album for the act since 1992’s Countdown to Extinction debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the chart dated Aug. 1 of that year. The new album also logs the group’s best sales week since 2007, when United Abominations launched with 54,000 sold at No. 8. Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface ascends 5-4 with 42,000 units (down 6 percent), Panic! at the Disco’s Death of a Bachelor falls 1-5 with 39,000 units (down 79 percent) and David Bowie’s Blackstar slips 4-6 with 35,000 units (down 61 percent). Chris Stapleton’s Traveller rides 8-7 with 34,000 units (down 16 percent), and The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness is up 9-8 with 32,000 units (down 6 percent). The new 2016 Grammy Nominees compilation album debuts at No. 9 with 31,000 units (all from pure album sales). Last year’s 2015 Grammy nominees set entered at No. 12 with 45,000 sold, on its way to a No. 9 peak three weeks later (65,000), following the Grammy Awards broadcast. Bryson Tiller’s Trapsoul closes out the top 10, holding at No. 10 with 31,000 units (down 1 percent).

Of note- no SoundScan-/Nielsen-era record lows for the No. 1-selling album in January.

Isn't Rihanna doing some promo event with Samsung for ANTI that may inflate the numbers? Sort of like Jay Z's Magna Carta. I imagine the numbers for that release are gonna be a mess.

Isn't Rihanna doing some promo event with Samsung for ANTI that may inflate the numbers? Sort of like Jay Z's Magna Carta. I imagine the numbers for that release are gonna be a mess. You might be confused. Both Rihanna and Jay Z's album were certified Platinum the day of release because 1 million copies were bought by Samsung and then consumers downloaded them for free. These copies will not count for the Billboard charts. Jay Z's album went on to to scan 1 million is certified 2xP.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6859557/rihanna-anti-work-billboard-charts'ANTI'S ARRIVAL: Despite being available for only a fraction of the chart tracking week, Anti starts at No. 27 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Feb. 13, bowing after only a little more than a day's worth of activity in the marketplace, as the latest chart's tracking week ended on Jan. 28. (The chart, and all of Billboard's charts dated Feb. 13, will be posted to Billboard.com on Feb. 2.) Anti was released through Tidal's streaming service on the evening of Jan. 27. (It was not released commercially until Jan. 28 through Tidal, and then through all digital retailers on Jan. 29. A physical CD release for the album is scheduled for Feb. 5.) The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The chart's tracking week runs Friday through Thursday each week. Anti's bow on the chart is largely driven by track sales and streaming activity of its lead single "Work" (it was released at 8 a.m. ET on Jan. 27) along with streams of the album’s tracks. In the week ending Jan. 28 in the U.S., "Work" sold 126,000 downloads and Anti album generated 4.7 million streams for its songs, according to Nielsen Music. A small number of sales for the Anti album were registered in the week ending Jan. 28, but not enough for the set to chart on any of Billboard's pure album sales charts. Anti's streaming debut on Tidal was concurrent with its availability -- in a limited quantity -- as a free download, supported by Samsung. Anti generated 1.47 million downloads globally in less than 15 hours. Those gratis downloads do not count toward the charts or Nielsen Music's sales figures. Industry forecasters expect Anti to make a big leap up the Billboard 200 chart next week -- possibly to No. 1 -- after the album has a full week of activity behind it. Prognosticators suggest Anti could shift around 125,000 in equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 4, which could power the album to No. 1 on the chart dated Feb. 20. If Anti hits the top, it will mark Rihanna's second No. 1, following her previous studio album, 2012's Unapologetic.

The numbers on ANTI are interesting - an extreme example on the effect of streaming.
460 in pure sales 4 million plus for streaming
Final rank #27 on the album popularity chart barely selling any actual albums in the tracking week

www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-23-megadeth-have-mega-salesMetal By Numbers 2/3: Megadeth have mega salesPosted by Matt Brown on February 3, 2016 So Megadeth’s Dystopia is the big star this week and the first major release of 2016. It’s in the top five and it’s the second highest debut of the band’s (or Mustaine’s, I should say) career, so there’s much to be celebrated. But, to be honest, I’m more distracted by the hot new compilation Now That’s What I Call Rock. It just find it so amusing. Remember when these albums had commercials? On actual television? Do they even still do that? And when are they going to take it a step further and put out Now That’s What I Call Kvlt Metal? Rev up that Kickstarter and take my dollars. (Note: The actual chart positions are missing from this week’s MBN are missing. Why? Whatever reason you want. That’s the power of free will.) Notable Debuts:Megadeth, Dystopia (UMe) 48,000 sold Megadeth’s fifteenth album is its second highest charting album ever following Countdown To Extinction. Various Artists, Now That’s What I Call Rock (Sony) 4,600 sold You know, it’s been awhile since we had some kind of random compilation on here. So just for kicks, let’s track this Now album that lets you hear Seether, Breaking Benjamin, and, uh, Walk The Moon all on one disc (two actually). Abbath, Abbath (Season of Mist) 2,600 sold The self-titled solo debut has an excellent first week. Failure Anthem, First World Problems (Razor & Tie) 1,500 sold This is the band’s debut album and, yes, that’s the actual title. Borknagar, Winter Thrice (Century Media) 1,000 sold This is the band’s tenth album. Lionheart, Love Don’t Live Here (Fast Break) 500 sold The band’s fourth album makes its debut. Ulver, ATGCLVLSSCAP (House of Mythology) 250 sold The band’s twelfth album is probably their most experimental yet. Notable Sales:Disturbed, Immortalized (Reprise) 4,900 sold This has reached 255,000 sold. Shinedown, Threat To Survival (Atlantic) 3,300 sold This gets a boost of 28%. Five Finger Death Punch, Got Your Six (Prospect Park) 3,200 sold This drops by 10%. Red, Of Beauty and Rage (Essential) 1,800 sold A 39% drop after a series of boosts. Breaking Benjamin, Dark Before Dawn (Hollywood) 1,600 sold It got a little dark after a 14% drop. Bring Me The Horizon, That’s The Spirit (Columbia) 1,600 sold A 7% drop. Witchcraft, Nucleus (Nuclear Blast) 2,100 sold A 71% drop in week two.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6867165/sam-hunt-montevallo-1-million-soldSam Hunt's 'Montevallo' Hits 1 Million Sold in the U.S.2/5/2016 by Keith Caulfield Sam Hunt claims his first million-selling album, as Montevallo stepped past the million sales threshold in the tracking week ending Jan. 28. The album -- his first full-length studio effort -- sold another 7,000 copies in the frame ending Jan. 28, according to Nielsen Music, bringing its total sales to 1.003 million. The MCA Nashville-released set is the first country album to sell a million copies in the U.S. since the week ending July 23, 2015, when Jason Aldean’s Old Boots, New Dirt crossed the million mark. Montevallo has spawned three No. 1 singles on the Hot Country Songs chart: “Leave the Night On,” “House Party” and “Take Your Time.” It additionally notched a No. 2 hit with “Break Up in a Small Town.” All four singles also reached the top 40 of the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart. Montevallo was released Oct. 28, 2014, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and has been among the top 50 albums on the weekly chart in every one of its 66 chart weeks. On the latest chart, dated Feb. 13, it climbs 24-21. Hunt closed out 2015 atop many of Billboard’s year-end charts, thanks to the success of his Montevallo effort and its songs. The album was No. 1 on the year-end Top Country Albums chart, while “Take Your Time” was the biggest Hot Country Songs title of the year. In more recent news, Hunt is nominated for two 2015 Grammy Awards -- best country album (Montevallo) and best new artist. The Grammy Awards will be presented on Feb. 15, and Hunt will be on hand at the CBS-broadcast show, performing in collaboration with Carrie Underwood.

TBH I am surprised Hunt's album is just now passing 1 million. It's been out for a year and a half and spawned a bunch of country hits.

I'm surprised, since there were actually some hard-hitting albums selling in January. What happened? This time last year felt a lot more barren in terms of album releases.
