Should take that message over to the Hot 100 thread and the recurrent rule rant.
Not necessarily true that a song that racked up bigger stats under more generous rules would be a bigger hit than a song that charted under stricter rules.

^My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. I hear Where Does My Heart Beat Now, If You Asked Me to and All By Myself on "90s radio" stations. Celine's SoundScan sales are impressive. From 2007: Unison - 1.216 million Celine Dion - 2.335 million The Colour of My Love - 4.487 million Dion Chante Plamondon - 110,320 The French Album - 237,570 Falling Into You - 10.754 million Let's Talk About Love - 9.426 million S'il Suffisait d'aimer - 109,535 These Are Special Times - 4.836 million All the Way - 7.417 million The Collector's Series - 879,555 A New Day Has Come - 3.264 million One Heart - 1.769 million 1 Fille & 4 Types - 23,925 A New Day...Live in Las Vegas - 472,435 Miracle - 908,850 On Ne Change Pas - 9,520 All the Way is now at 8 million. These Are Special Times is now over 5.3 million. Celine has sold over 52.2 million albums with SoundScan. Not only that, but LTAL managed those massive sales even while Titanic soundtrack was also Diamond as may opted buy the ST, which contained the 'raw' unmixed version. Can you imagine what LTAL could've sold? And that followed the major flop first single with Barbra. I also believe Taking Chances sold pretty darn well, which surprised me and reaffirmed that Celine is an album shifter. It's too bad she abruptly (and logically) stopped promoting LMBTL. Also I believe there is a rights issue with ANDHC because it's not on iTunes.

Any ideas why Grease is listed as a debut on the Billboard 200? Could just be an error.

Yep- just another example of Hot 100 showing not always telling the full story. The release of Titanic certainly bolstered the song's fortunes, as, while it was ranked in the 50s in airplay, it was moving slowly in airplay before the film's release. ....as many soundtrack songs written specifically for a movie do, right? They blow up after the exposure from the movie - if people like the song, that is. See You Again comes to mind as a recent example of this. It had a slow beginning and blew up as soon as the movie hit (#100, #82, #84... and then opening weekend gave it a 3-day movie boost to #10 and then #1). And mind you, it had commercial availability which prompted its early charting, while MHWGO was not available for its first 2 months of release. Meanwhile, her LTAL album was flying off the shelves this entire time, sitting at #2 behind Garth Brooks for several weeks. As for the song's chart history.... MHWGO immediately debuted on the overall Top 75 radio airplay chart, and was an instant Top 25 AC hit. 12/08/97 Radio Add date 12/19/97 Titanic Opening Day 12/20/97 AC #21, OVERALL #65 (debut positions for tracking week that began on radio add date of 12/08) 12/27/97 AC #13, OVERALL #56 01/03/98 AC #11, OVERALL #41 01/10/98 AC #7, OVERALL #39 01/17/98 AC #5, OVERALL #18 01/24/98 AC #3, OVERALL #4 01/31/98 AC #1, OVERALL #1 (and it stayed at #1 for 10 weeks) 02/28/98 HOT 100 #1 (debut, 2 weeks on top) 07/11/98 HOT 100 #53 (its final week before going recurrent) I think the "slow moving" airplay (if we can really call it that?) was due to the timing of a new release at the end of the year (holidays, "radio freeze"). The 1/03 and 1/10 airplay charts were both stagnant across the board - as per usual - which explains its subtle movement and then a big jump the following week. I agree about the Hot 100 not always telling the full story - as MHWGO wasn't eligible to chart until it was made commercially available as a single... and the single was limited to less than 700k copies (half of which sold in its first week - causing it to debut at #1).... yet it stayed put on the H100 without sales help for the majority of its full 20 week run and was only able to go Gold based on its limited availability. So, MHWGO's full story - and/or impact - definitely weren't told on the Hot 100.

Perhaps but, the albums archive only goes back to 1985 so, in that sense, it is a debut
Officially though the "weeks on" should read 78 with 12 weeks at #1 and 29 weeks in the top 10

Same with all those David Bowie albums that re-entered last month.

^Go on. Keep arguing with me. That's what you do. Don't be an ass. What I said was correct. The album has not appeared on the chart since the beginning of the archive. It might not be lazy lack of proofreading, it may be that this is its first week on the chart since the beginning of the archive which is why they probably called it a debut.

Bullsh*t. We all know it's not a NEW album. It's a re-entry. It's an error and HAVE NO F*CKING IDEA why you have to go on and on about it.

Don't respond to my posts if you are not capable of civil conversation. This is its first week on the BB200 since the beginning of the archives they use to post the chart. This might be why they called it a debut.
Obviously it is week 78 and obviously it is an error. But it might not be a proofreading thing was the point I was making. It might be that the software that spits out the chart called it a new title because it is not in the database. The cause of the error, appears to be an incomplete database. Hopefully they will fix it on the next chart, assuming it is still charting.

Are you guys sure it's the same album? I do note that on Billboard.com, they list this one as [Original Soundtrack] while the 77-weeker is known as [The Soundtrack from the Motion Picture]. Maybe it's the Broadway musical that got the boost?
(And yes, the art used is the movie's, but that's completely irrelevant; they've used British NOW art from a decade ago for new US NOWs on several occasions, and they used a Disney animated soundtrack art for the live action Cinderella's soundtrack)
(The latter is not to discredit it being the movie necessarily, just not to use that evidence. It is plausible that because the titles differ, the autogenerating chart didn't recognize the weeks as a re-entry if they are indeed intended to be one and the same.)

Celine was the Adele of the 90's, AC and Hot AC absolutely adored her.

It's totally common to mark a release as new if it's charting for the first time since renewal of chart/database etc. The Official Charts Company in the UK does it all the time. Especially with singles that are charting as digital downloads now vs. physical ages ago.

The Grease Soundtrack charting as a new entry was indeed just an error and has been fixed to show the re-entry symbol along with its #1 peak and 78 weeks on. www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200

Guys- is it really necessary to argue like this over chart information?
Billboard has clarified that the "NEW" designation for Grease was an error, which will be fixed.
EDIT: I see it has. Good thing I tweeted the inquiry. :)

Billboard has clarified that the "NEW" designation for Grease was an error, which will be fixed. EDIT: I see it has. Good thing I tweeted the inquiry. :) Wow that they felt it was much of an error to go back and change it. Yes, it is necessary with Gary. He's smart. He's probably been following the Billboard charts as long as I have. He really should know better. But, you know how he is. He fixates on something and can't let it go. What we should be discussing in this thread is the multitude of Catalog albums. Why? From position 200-101, The Billboard 200 has approx. 52 Catalog albums. More than half! From 1-100, there are approx. 22 Catalog albums. For a total of 74 Catalog albums.

^Top Album Sales is the Billboard 100 of what the BB 200 had been, so probably not anytime soon. Billboard added TEA/streaming to the BB 200 mix to boost the units counts for titles.

I am questioning is it really necessary to have Journey's Greatest Hits on the Billboard 200 each week. It's gets old. It's great that Journey is still doing well, but it's keeping current acts from charting higher. Has streaming made labels lazy? We did not have a big Xmas album this year. Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith charted in the Top 20 best selling albums for 2014 and 2015. Where are the new acts? Is the music industry just going to rely on the big names for album sales? Rely on Drake, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars, Lorde, Pink, Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Michael Buble, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, OneRepublic, Ariana Grande and Metallica. All of these artists will/should have new albums out in 2016. I know, a lot of topics to discuss!

And I think you forgot about Coldplay and Rihanna, they already released new albums, and forgot about Taylor Swift too.
