Rihannaβs Anti album vaults to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the divaβs second leader. The set earned 166,000 units in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 4, according to Nielsen Music, with pure album sales equating to 124,000 of that sum. Anti jumps from No. 27 to No. 1 on the list, following the albumβs arrival on the tally a week ago (chart dated Feb. 13, reflecting data in the tracking week ending Jan. 28). Anti bowed at No. 27 after being available for only a fraction of the chartβs tracking week. The album was released through Tidal's streaming service on the evening of Jan. 27, commercially released the next day (again, through Tidal), and became widely available to all digital retailers on Jan. 29.
Anti's first full week of sales (128,000) was likely tempered by the album's previous availability as a free download, supported by Samsung. It was given away beginning on Jan. 27 in a limited quantity and generated 1.47 million downloads globally in less than 15 hours. Those gratis downloads did not count toward the charts or Nielsen Music's sales figures. Rihanna previously led the Billboard 200 with her last studio effort, 2012βs Unapologetic. It launched with 238,000 copies sold in its first week.
Anti is also Rihannaβs eighth top 10 album β every one of her studio efforts has reached the region. She first hit the top 10 with her debut album, Music of the Sun, which bowed and peaked at No. 10 on the chart dated Sept. 17, 2005. Chart fans may appreciate this trivia tidbit: As Anti jumps 27-1 on the Billboard 200, it scores the biggest jump to No. 1 in eight years. Radioheadβs In Rainbows was the last album to log a bigger leap to No. 1, when it moved from No. 156 to No. 1 on the Jan. 19, 2008-dated chart. It's amazing how Chris Stapleton's album has been able to hang on since it doesn't even have a hit single. I hope the Grammys give him another boost, but I'm not sure he's getting to perform his own material.

Adele's '25' Sales Surpass 8 Million in the U.S.
25' is only the sixth album released since 2001 to sell 8 million in the U.S.
Adeleβs mega-successful 25 album has now sold 8 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. The set sold another 89,000 copies in the week ending Feb. 4, bringing its total sum to 8.03 million.
25 is just the sixth album released since 2001 to have sold 8 million copies. It follows 21, Usherβs Confessions (released in 2004, 10.3 million sold), 50 Centβs Get Rich or Die Tryinβ (2003, 8.4 million), Norah Jonesβ Come Away With Me (2002, 11.1 million) and Eminemβs The Eminem Show (2002, 10.6 million).
Nielsen Music began electronically tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991, the same year Billboard started using the companyβs data to compile the Billboard 200 albums chart.
25 remains the biggest-selling album released since Adeleβs own 21, which bowed in 2011. The latter has sold 11.5 million, and is the 10th largest selling album in Nielsen Music history. 25 was released on Nov. 20, 2015 through XL Recordings/Columbia Records. It is Adeleβs third studio album and has spent eight nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991, there are 46 albums that have sold at least 8 million copies.
Further, Adele is the third solo woman to have tallied two 8 million sellers since 1991. Celine Dion and Britney Spears are the other leading ladies: Dion did it with three albums -- Falling Into You (released in 1996; 10.8 million), Letβs Talk About Love (1997; 9.6 million) and All the Way: A Decade of Song (1999, 8.1 million) -- while Spears scored with β¦Baby One More Time (1999, 10.6 million) and Oops!β¦I Did It Again (2000, 9.2 million).

I'm not even a Celine Dion fan, but at the very least, she has two - "My Heart Will Go On" and "Because You Loved Me." You could make an argument for "The Power of Love" and "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." |

I know "One Hit Wonder" labels are a popular concept on this board but this illustrates one of the problems with it.
For example, If someone develops a case of Alzheimer's, the Beatles or Madonna could eventually be "one-hit wonders" with the passage of time.
Songs that were not big hits in the day could become big hits a generation later and the reverse could happen a generation later the hits of the past could sound "dated" and "forgotten" to history.
Perceptions of hits change over time but regardless that doesn't change the fact that a big hit in 1990 is still a big hit in 1990 even if the current year is 2016.

"My Heart Will Go On" is Celine's signature song. That doesn't make that her only memorable hit.
And it would also be wrong to say that "I Will Always Love You" is Whitney's only memorable hit when "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is a huge pop culture song (for example).

That is Chris Stapleton's first significant hit. |

She had far fewer hits than acts like Mariah and Madonna yet consistently had larger album sales at her peak. I'm sure the adult appeal helped, but it's still odd. And, yeah, in the end she probably only has 3-4 songs that were truly memorable. I don't mean that as criticism (or praise or anything), just saying it's interesting. Of course Norah Jones first album sold huge off only one minor hit. |

^ The adult appeal you mentioned is more than just helpful, imo, it is the definitive reason why she's had the sales she's had (and continues to have). While her big albums have been anchored by a big hit song or two which certainly helped tip the scales - the underlying reason is that through her body of work she positioned herself as a mature adult-oriented artist with a beautiful voice who sings nice songs. No overtly sexy stuff, no gimmicks. She's acquired a very strong built-in audience/demographic who doesn't need hit singles to buy albums. They just buy her albums, period. She's also very "gift-able" in that older demo. I would liken Celine to Streisand in this context rather than Mariah or Madonna.
Michael BublΓ©, Josh Groban... they share a lot of this same demo and therefore are strong album sellers without a lot of (or any) big hit singles.

Celine's popularity was gradual from 1990 until Falling Into You, where she was huge. When MHWGO came out, it was the culmination of a bunch of things at the right time. The single from the biggest movie, when soundtrack singles were huge anyway, plus it was her first single after her last era, which was big anyway. The perfect formula that led to a massive hit. So that gave her a second blockbuster album just because, since Let's Talk About Love didn't really have any other major hits from it.

A lot of people only know My Heart Will Go On. Well, those people didn't live in the 90's for sure. As far as i know My heart will go on is not even her biggest billboard hit. And neither on UK when it is Think twice (and european and Uk smash that surprisingly flopped on the USA). Like it or not, Celine was one of the most consistent hitmakers of the 90's. And she even scored a big big hit with her french song Pour que tu m'aimes encore |

It was likely pretty close to the biggest Billboard hit but not the biggest Hot 100 hit because it was a limited-single

Yep- just another example of Hot 100 showing not always telling the full story. The release of Titanic certainly bolstered the song's fortunes, as, while it was ranked in the 50s in airplay, it was moving slowly in airplay before the film's release.
