Unfortunately, I never knew who she was until I heard of her death 3 years ago. I bought some of her songs on iTunes and really fell in love with them. "Guys Do It All The Time", "Ten Thousand Angels", "Maybe He'll Notice Her Now", "You'll Never Know" are all great songs. "A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)" has become one my biggest guilty pleasures that I've ever listened to. I also heard her song "By Her Side" from her last album, I'm Still Here and I love that one as well and bought it on iTunes. So I've been listening to a bunch of her songs for a few years now.
This week, however, I listened to the full Ten Thousand Angels album for the first time on Spotify. I fell in love with it and bought it on iTunes. I think it's a great album! Her voice is beautiful and I just find it so sad that she faced so many struggles in her life, because I think she could've potentially been one of country's most successful female artists ever if she had been able to tap into her full potential. As I was playing her debut album at work the other day, one of my co-workers even complimented her voice and said that her songs weren't bad (and he's very critical of mainstream music and listens to some bizarre stuff lol).
Anyone else here a fan of her voice and/or music? Should I check out any of her other albums? I noticed that her 2 albums after Ten Thousand Angels (If I Don't Stay the Night and I'm Not So Tough) aren't available on Spotify or iTunes though. Anyone know why?.

I saluted Mindy McCready back in September, 2013. This is what I said at the time:
9. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: We all know what happened this year in January and February. In January, David Wilson, boyfriend of Mindy McCready and the father of their child, committed suicide. A month later, sadly, McCready followed suit. To say that was a tragedy would be the ultimate understatement. Considering what happened to her during the 21st century, it is hard to imagine her during happier times (yes, she had some). She reached the peak of her popularity (albeit, short lived) 17 years ago this week when Guys Do It All The Time became her only chart topper. McCready turned 18 in November, 1993. The following year she moved to Nashville to persue a singing career. She signed to BNA Records in 1995. Her debut CD, Ten Thousand Angels was released in 1996. The title track was picked as the first single. It became her first top ten when it hit #6 during the spring. The second single, Guys Do It All The Time was released in June. It hit #1 in September. The song is about her acting like a man (quite a step down for her). Even the video punctuates what McCready was talking about. Third single, Maybe He'll Notice Her Now was a duet with the lead singer of Lonestar (her labelmates), Richie McDonald. That kicked off her 1997 on a #18 note (Lonestar was on the chart with Heartbroke Every Day, a #18 hit). Ten Thousand Angels ended with A Girl's Gotta Do What A Girl's Gotta Do which became her third and final top ten when it peaked at #4. That was her most successful CD. It is certified double platinum and hit #5 country and #40 on the top 200 chart. McCready's personal life came to the forefront in 1997 when she was engaged to actor Dean Cain (himself quite popular at the time thanks to his TV show, Lois And Clark). That lasted until 1998. In the meantime, she went to work on her second CD, If I Don't Stay The Night. Lead single, What If I Do faltered at #26 in 1997. Second single, You'll Never Know became her last top 40 hit at #19 in 1998. A third single almost became a top 40: The Other Side Of This Kiss (#41). Oh Romeo, the fourth single did not chart. The CD is certified gold. A third CD, I'm Not So Tough yielded a pair of #57 singles in 1999: One In A Million and All I Want Is Everything. She was dropped by BNA in 2000 after five years at the label. She signed to Capitol Records in 2001. Her self-titled CD in 2002 yielded her last two chart appearances. They are: 1. Scream-2001-#46 2. Maybe, Maybe Not-2002-#49 She was dropped by Capitol in 2003. Her personal life made more news than her recording career. She dated William McKnight in 2003. In 2005, he was charged with attempted murder on McCready when he choked and beat her. She stated that the relationship was over, but that was not true. Her first attempt at suicide failed. After that, she was hospitalized after an alcohol overdose that was mixed with a large amount of drugs. She got back together with McKnight and just before 2005 ended, she became pregnant with their child, Zander (born in March, 2006). In 2008, her relationship with baseball player Roger Clemens surfaced. It was reported that it started while McCready was a teenager. She said it did (when she was 16). In late 2008, she attempted suicide again. It failed. A drug overdose in 2010 made headlines. She met David Wilson, a record producer. She managed to release her last CD, I'm Still Here on Iconic Records in 2010. The relationship was serious enough that she gave birth to their child, Zayne in April, 2012. 2012 became 2013 and Wilson took his life. After a few days, McCready was looked at as a suspect in his death. After a month, McCready took her life. Both died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. McCready was 37 years old. A host of legal problems followed McCready during this time. Since those are complicated matters to say the least, they will NOT be discussed here. While this column is NOT here to judge, but to report, had better decisions been made by her, the following would be true: 1. She would be with us today. That's a given. 2. Zander and Zayne would still have their mother. That is the saddest part of this story. 3. Her recording career would have been more successful and fruitful. To think, this November McCready would be celebrating her 38th birthday. Zander would be heading toward his eighth birthday and Zayne would be speeding toward two. McCready is in heaven now with her 'ten thousand angels'. R.I.P., McCready, your life was NOT wasted. Your sons are your greatest testament. This is what the chart looked like back then:
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 14, 1996: 1. GUYS DO IT ALL THE TIME-MINDY MCCREADY-BNA 2. Learning As You Go-Rick Trevino-Columbia 3. I Don't Think I Will-James Bonamy-Epic 4. She Never Lets It Go To Her Heart-Tim McGraw-Curb 5. So Much For Pretending-Bryan White-Asylum 6. It's Midnight Cinderella-Garth Brooks-Capitol 7. Living In A Moment-Ty Herndon-Epic 8. Runnin' Away With My Heart-Lonestar-BNA 9. Carried Away-George Strait-MCA 10. Jacob's Ladder-Mark Wills-Mercury

^^^ Beautiful tribute!!!! I am not too familiar with Mindy's discography, but I used to own a copy of 10,000 Angels, which (like most 90s country albums) has no bad song.
I think she suffered the sophomore slum when her second album didn't match up with her first in terms of quality, which is a shame considering that Mindy is not primarily a singer-songwriter. She could have chosen stronger material as singles. With her looks, her voice, and 90S LOVE of Female voices, her career of hits could span easily 5-8 years (a la Faith Hill and Shania).

I always liked Mindy's material, especially her older stuff. Although it saw basically no success, my favourite of her albums was her third album, I'm Not So Tough, followed by her second album If I Don't Stay The Night, and then her debut Ten Thousand Angels. I also own her fourth, self-titled album, but imo that album shows a steep drop off in quality.
It's too bad she never really broke through to that next level of success, especially after how well her first album did. I can't help but wonder if it really boils down to a case of her personal life completely overshadowing (and getting in the way of) bigger success.

She had a beautiful voice indeed. Hers is a sad, sad story. I remember watching her on Celebrity Rehab and it was so sad. She fainted there once and sang I'm Still Here at the finale, bringing everybody to tears. As far as album cuts goes, I really enjoy a song of hers called Two Different Things, but I can't quite remember in which album it is.

Mindy fan here. Aside from her debut album, I loved her second release If I Don't Stay the Night just as much. I'd consider "What If I Do" a guilty pleasure and "You'll Never Know" remains one of my all time favorite songs from 1998; favorite album track would be "Oh Romeo" followed by the title track.
She seemed to have such a promising career, but alas whatever personal demons she had took her down a dark road.

I love love love If I Don't Stay The Night it's one of my favorite albums of the 90's! "You'll Never Know" is such an outstanding single I'm still shocked it wasn't a hit. Her 3rd album is also severely underrated and I highly highly suggest it too. Her self titled fourth album was a little weaker but there was some good songs on there and it's cheap on amazon so definitely look into getting it as well. Her final album was independently produced but I still felt it was a strong effort. It's probably the hardest to listen to for me because I bought it when I met her at CMA Fest which was the last one she was ever at. I always think about meeting her when I listen to it and it just makes me sad to think how happy she was when I met er an how much turmoil she was still hiding.

She had some of the best material of female artists in the 90s, in my opinion. I thought 'If I Don't Stay The Night' was a huge step forward in terms of artistic integrity from her debut. There was a cohesive sound to it and the topics seemed much more mature and personal. Someone posted her live performance of 'Long, Long Time' from the CMT Girl's Night Out special on YouTube. It's a great performance and she's actually crying by the end of it.
I agree her third album is underrated...I think it's also very mature and personal but slightly less cohesive in sound. I think they were trying different sounds looking for a hit like 'All I Want Is Everything' which was one of my least favorite single releases from her but the majority of the album is exceptional in quality (I'm Not So Tough, Two Different Things, Thunder and Roses, Over and Over).
I also agree her fourth album was probably her weakest. There was some good material on it (Maybe, Maybe Not, Lovin' Your Man, Scream, The Fire (as much as I love Mindy, I think Chely Wright's version was better), Tremble (those notes at the end), but more bland cuts for me than the previous albums (Lips Like Yours, If I Feel Your Hands, Don't Speak).
It's frustrating her second and third albums aren't available on digital retailers and I'm afraid that with her death, we may never see them available.

I didn't get into Mindy McCready until after her publicized death which prompted me to check out her music further and over the past couple years I've gotten her first two albums + self-titled release from the early 2000s. So, you could say I've become a fan. Her voice was incredible and she has some great material, so it's a shame what happened to her career and personal life after such a promising start and it's unfortunate that she only really caught my attention because of her struggles. :( Her first two albums are full of great songs but "Lovin' Your Man" and "Maybe, Maybe Not" from the self-titled album are my favorite Mindy McCready songs.

All this Mindy talk has me listening to her entire discography and I'm just happy I live alone because I'm singing and dancing (with the uptempos at least) all around my house! I truly do love her music! Thanks ant for bringing her up!

Mindy was one of my favorite artists of the 90s and her music lives on in my life to this day. All her big hits brings me back to my favorite era of country, but even her later releases were great. "Maybe, Maybe Not" is such a great and fun song. I remember having that song on multiple mix cd's because I loved it so much. "Scream" was another one I loved. Even the last song she recorded, "I'll See You Yesterday," was great.
Her life was such a tragic story. Tragic also because you could see what was going to happen yet no one could stop it. People who may be too young to have been around for Mindy's career really should check her out. Her songs are so great, with fun and clever lyrics and the way she sings is so distinctly, Mindy.

I actually came across an article a couple of weeks ago that I posted in Carrie Underwood's thread, that "I'll See You Yesterday" was originally written for Carrie, but she turned it down and then Mindy heard it and begged the songwriter to let her record it. Was that song supposed to be on an album or something? I've had a hard time finding a high quality version of it.

So I finally bought If I Don't Stay the Night and I love it WAY more than I thought I would! Her vocal on the title track is phenomenal. I also really love "What If I Do", "Only A Whisper", and of course, "You'll Never Know", which is the only song from this album that I've heard (actually own) before buying this album.
I was also able to track down the international version of I'm Not So Tough on eBay and received it this past weekend (I wanted to hear all of the songs so that's why I wanted the international version, and this used copy on eBay was legit the only copy I was able to find on the entire internet!). On first listen, I wasn't really a fan of this album at all, and thought it was a steep drop in quality from her 2nd album. But I'm growing to love it more and more. So far, my favorites are "Dream On", "Two Different Things", "I Love You Too", and "Thunder and Roses".
I plan on buying her self-titled album after I listen to this one a bit more, even though people have said it isn't as good as the first three.

I think her self-titled album is her best one, honestly. Maybe it's just me, but the two singles + "Lovin' Your Man" and "Lips Like Yours" are some of her best songs. The steel guitar on "Lovin' Your Man" in particular is incredible and that song makes it worth the album alone, imo.

She definitely was great. I own all of her albums but I haven't listened to them in quite a while. Her first 2 albums are my faves from her.
I also remember watching 20/20 special about her after her death so you may want to look around and see if you can find it.

Does anyone know if there is HQ version around anywhere of "I'll See You Yesterday"? I believe it was the last song she recorded before her death, and many think of it as her suicide note. There's a low quality version on YouTube, but that seems to be all I can find.
