hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=299937Friday, February 26, 2016 THREE-WAY IN THE OFFING?A battle could be brewing for #1 next week. It involves three titles, one from each of the three major distributors. Sony’s Adele (XL/Columbia), UMG’s The 1975 (Interscope) and WEA/ADA’s Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) all seem poised to challenge for the top. Adele, coming off four BRIT Award wins, is expected to land somewhere in the 80-90k range. The 1975, who already have preorders and fan site sales in the neighborhood of 40k, could also tally around 80-90k. The wild card, surprisingly, is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. After selling 1.5m copies of their previous album, The Heist, and nearly 8m copies of its lead single, “Thrift Shop,” the duo finds itself facing an uphill battle with the follow-up. Because the album has been given just a one-week preorder and there’s no hit single, forecasters are reluctant to suggest first-week sales of more than 75k. Of course, even a slight over-performance will put it in the running for #1. Check back on Saturday morning, when we’ll take our first look at this week’s new releases.

Whatever Macklemore and Lewis sell will be indicative of the size of their following IMO, so 75k would actually be a solid showing for them. I think someone in the previous HITS thread predicted no more than 40 or 50k.

^Agreed. It's definitely a personal, need-to-get-sh*t-off-my-chest statement type of album. Respectable move, imo, considering they could have made a predictable commercial album for $$. Anything this sells is good by me.
Dance Off could be a hit for them. That's about it as far as I can tell.

That's actually better than I expected for Macklemore. Considering that the only hit from this died ages ago and virtually nonexistent promotion, I thought 50-55k would be where they'd top out with this. The Heist had a solid opening too prior to Thrift Shop blowing up, but even then I'd say there was more hype.
Solid opening for The 1975.

Are those numbers sales or SPS? I believe they are for sales, and SPS projections will come with their top 15 article.

And these numbers are not based on actual sales. Just industry estimates...
We could get very different numbers tomorrow.

Would be great if The 1975 did that! Great to see Adele looking to be stayiing stable with the BRITS having a small effect on her US sales. I think it'll be close for the top spot as I can see The 1975 doing well in streaming across all its album tracks, whereas Adele will only have WWWY/Hello to rely on.

The 1975's album is held back on Spotify for a fortnight, so that will hold back it's SPS numbers for it's opening week.

Also, Piece by Piece is now #3 on US iTunes album chart and the title track is at #1. Can she return to #1 on the SPS chart?

Holding back The 1975's album from Spotify for two weeks? In aid of what exactly?

Most of their fans are using streaming services anyway so it's only going to do harm for them. Are record companies nuts? Nobody buys an album if one can get it for free so why not provide it legally in the platforms people actually use?
ALso, could someone fix the typo in the title, please?

That's dumb on their part but I got my signed copy from Target so I'm good.

It's kind of silly to hold an album off of streaming services for 2 weeks and tell people you're doing it. When I played track from Rihanna's Anti for some of my friends, they asked when it'd be on Spotify. When I said it would likely be a week, they said they were cool with waiting that long to listen to it in full. It's not that long for most people to wait. This is different than say what Adele, Beyonce, or Taylor with Red did, where you didn't know when the album would be up for streaming and it'd likely be a year or so before it'd be put up.
Coldplay might have had an excuse since they've been around for a long time and have proven to be good sellers with every release relative to most of the market, but an act on their second album isn't in the same boat.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=299960Saturday, February 27, 2016 NEW RELEASES: THE 1975 DON'T sleepThe 1975 will win the battle to rule next Friday’s sales chart, with Adele likely #2. Things may be closer on the SPS chart, but Adele will have to stay relatively flat in order to challenge. The U.K. band’s laboriously titled, saucily un-capitalized I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it sits at #1 on the iTunes album chart, followed by fellow debut This Unruly Mess I’ve Made by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Kelly Clarkson holds the #3 spot, with Adele currently at #4. Stay tuned for updates; in the meantime, here’s how the week’s top two debuts are shaping up: The 1975 (Dirty Hit/Interscope) 90-100k album, 95-105k SPSMacklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) 45-55k, 50-60k

Could Kelly reenter the chart in the top 10 next week? When was the last time an album went from not on the chart to in the top 10 in a nondebut week?

Dance Off could be a hit for them. That's about it as far as I can tell. [ I agree. Dance Off has a sort of Can't Hold Us/Downtown/Thrift Shop vibe to it. I also think "Brad Pitt's Cousin" could be a hit too due to its lyrical content and play on a huge Hollywood couple

Great for The 1975. Hopefully "The Sound" turns into their first big hit in the US.

It's not an uncommon occurrence. And Chris Stapleton's "Traveller" went from off-the-chart last year to re-entering at #1 (the first album ever re-enter at the top).

The 1975 would probably reach 120k with SPS if the album was on Spotify
(I'm a broken record, I know...)

^Agreed. It's definitely a personal, need-to-get-sh*t-off-my-chest statement type of album. Respectable move, imo, considering they could have made a predictable commercial album for $$. Anything this sells is good by me. I don't think the album is that artistic... there are many "fun" songs like Dance Off, Let's Eat, Brad Pitt's Cousin and Buckshot, as well as the personal songs, just like in The Heist. And releasing Downtown as the lead single gives the impression they were going with the commercial approach before that underperformed. The whole release strategy for this seems so odd for me. There's absolutely zero buzz for the album right now, but last year he was even performing Kevin at the AMAs, which made no sense since it wasn't available as a single and the album was not coming anytime soon. Why not perform it now? If he wants this album to be taken seriously intead, why not choose one of the "serious" songs and push it as a single. It's as if they didn't know what to do with this album. But Macklemore is no Kanye and this isn't selling by itself.

He was getting big promo spots he should have sang a new proper single on one of them. We'll see hat happens when they put out a new single. It feels like it was almost thrown out there with no back up plan. Has he been doing promo?
