Zayn Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart With 'Mind of Mine'

Zayn is the only male U.K. solo artist to debut at No. 1 with their first album.

Zayn debuts straight in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his debut solo effort, Mind of Mine. The set, released on March 25 through RCA Records, earned 157,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 31 in the U.S. Of that sum, it sold 112,000 in pure album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new April 16-dated chart (where Mind of Mine is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, April 5.

Zayn -- born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England -- is the first male U.K. solo artist to debut at No. 1 with their first album.

Further, Zayn is the first male U.K. artist to reach No. 1 with their first album since George Michael climbed to the top of the list in 1988 with Faith. (Faith didn’t debut at No. 1 -- it started at No. 41, and rose to the top in its ninth week on the chart.)

Zayn is also the first U.K. act (solo or otherwise) to debut at No. 1 with their first album since his former group, One Direction, launched atop the list in 2012 with Up All Night (on the March 31, 2012-dated chart). One Direction scored three further leaders with Zayn as part of its lineup: Take Me Home, Midnight Memories and Four.

Speaking of One Direction, Zayn is now one of the relative few solo artists to have achieved a No. 1 as part of a group and also as a soloist. He stands alongside artists like Justin Timberlake (who topped the list with *NSYNC and on his own), Gwen Stefani (with No Doubt) and Beyonce (with Destiny’s Child).

In even more firsts: Zayn is the first U.K. act to bow at No. 1 with their first album on both the Billboard 200 and the Official U.K. Albums Chart since Susan Boyle started atop both lists with I Dreamed a Dream in 2009.

Mind of Mine was led by the single “Pillowtalk,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Feb. 20). The achievement made Zayn the first U.K. artist to bow at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with their first charted single.

Coming in at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 chart is K. Michelle with More Issues Than Vogue (59,000 units; 54,000 in pure album sales). The start matches her high-water mark on the list, first achieved with her debut effort, Rebellious Soul, when it opened at No. 2 on the Aug. 31, 2013 list. More Issues Than Vogue is the singer’s third top 10 effort. Following Rebellious Soul, she notched a second top 10 with Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? in 2014 (debuting and peaking at No. 6).

In a bit of chart trivia, the word vogue has barely registered on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Previous to this week, the last time the word appeared in the title of a charting album on the Billboard 200 was way back in 1970, when The Vogues’ The Vogues’ Greatest Hits completed a nine-week run on the chart. (It peaked at No. 148 on Feb. 14, 1970.)

Of course, “Vogue” has been the title of a No. 1 song for Madonna on the Hot 100 -- the word’s only appearance on the list, in fact.

Back on the new Billboard 200, Rihanna’s Anti holds at No. 3 (50,000 units; down 4 percent), Justin Bieber’s Purpose rises 5-4 (48,000; up 3 percent), Adele’s 25 slips 4-5 (47,000; down 9 percent) and Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface climbs 7-6 (41,000; up 27 percent). The latter title is also up 52 percent in pure album sales (to 21,000 sold for the week), thanks largely to a $6.99 sale price in the iTunes Store. (A promotion that the band made their fans aware of through both Twitter and Facebook.)

Young Thug claims his highest charting album yet (and first top 10) with the arrival of Slime Season 3 at No. 7 (38,000 units; 22,000 in sales). He previously charted with a pair of No. 22-peaking sets: I’m Up in 2016 and Barter 6 in 2015.

Chris Stapleton’s Traveller dips 6-8 with 31,000 units (down 6 percent).

Rock band Asking Alexandria earns its third top 10 album with the bow of The Black at No. 9 (30,000 units; 28,000 in pure album sales). It follows From Death to Destiny (No. 5 in 2013) and Reckless & Relentless (No. 9 in 2011).

Rounding out the top 10 is The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness at No. 10 (up three spots) with just under 30,000 units (up 18 percent).

K. Michelle and Young Thug debut projects in the Top 10 of Billboard's Top 200 albums chart this week. Rihanna and The Weeknd remain in the Top 10. Kendrick Lamar slips down the charts in untitled unmastered.'s fourth week.

Young Thug Charts Second Project Of Year

Young Thug's Slime Season 3 lands at the #7 spot its first week on the chart. The mixtape sold 38,349 album equivalent units and was streamed 18.9 million times. This follows the release of I'm Up, which debuted at #22 in February.

K. Michelle Sells More Copies Than Vogue

K. Michelle's More Issues Than Vogue album debuts at #2, behind Zayn's Mind of Mine, which takes this week's album sales crown. More Issues Than Vogue sold 59,158 album equivalent units and was streamed nearly five million times. The singer's 2013 album, Rebellious Soul also peaked at #2 on the chart while 2014's Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? reached the #6 spot.

Kendrick Lamar Slips Down Charts

Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered. sees a 28 percent drop in album sales this week, landing at #34. The project debuted at #1 in March. This week, it sold 14,856 album equivalent units and was streamed 7.6 million times. Lamar performed "untitled 07 (Levitate)" for the first time at a March Madness Festival last week.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Hymns' Is Now Joey + Rory's Biggest-Selling Album Ever

On the most recent Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 16), Zayn debuted at No. 1 with his first album, Mind of Mine. It earned 157,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 31, according to Nielsen Music, and made Zayn the only male U.K. solo artist to debut at No. 1 with their first effort.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

— Joey + Rory, Hymns - No. 18 — As Joey + Rory’s Hymns continues to rule as 2016’s best-selling Christian or gospel album, the set garners a new feat: It’s now the biggest-selling album for the country duo.

The inspirational album’s sales now stand at 275,000 through the week ending March 31, according to Nielsen Music. (It sold 21,000 copies in the latest tracking week.) Its new total brings it past Joey + Rory’s previous best seller, their 2008 debut, The Life of a Song (255,000).

The duo’s Joey Feek died of cancer on March 4, and, in the wake of her passing, the Hymns album reached No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart dated April 2. The set has occupied a place within the top 10 of the weekly chart since its release seven weeks ago. On the Billboard 200 chart, the album debuted and peaked at No. 4. It slips 10-18 on the newest ranking.

To put the sales of Hymns in better perspective, it is 2016’s sixth biggest selling album among all genres, and the second-biggest country set (behind just Chris Stapleton’s Traveller, with 415,000). Hymns is the only Christian or gospel album to sell more than 100,000 copies in 2016. (Lauren Daigle’s How Can It Be is in second place among the year’s biggest Christian/gospel sets, with 91,000 sold.)

— Joe Bonamassa, Blues of Desperation - No. 12 — Joe Bonamassa enters at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 with Blues of Desperation (26,000 units), and debuts at a familiar rank on the Blues Albums chart: No. 1. It’s the guitarist/singer/songwriter’s 16th leader on the Blues Albums chart, stretching back to 2002’s So It’s Like That.

The new album also enters at a career-high No. 5 on Top Album Sales (25,000 copies sold in the week ending March 31, according to Nielsen Music -- his second-biggest sales week ever).

Bonamassa’s track record on the Blues Albums chart is remarkable. Out of his 27 charted titles, every single one of them reached the top 10. Bonamassa continues to lead, by far, with the most No. 1s in the 20-year history of the chart (it launched on Sept. 2, 1995). Tied for second place with the most leaders are B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, with nine each.

— Sia, This Is Acting - No. 16 — Sia’s This Is Acting vaults up the Billboard 200 (36-16) with a 95 percent gain in equivalent album units earned (rising to 24,000 for the week ending March 31, according to Nielsen Music). Sia was showcased on the March 24 episode of American Idol, where she served as a mentor and the contestants sang Sia-written tracks, while Sia herself performed “Cheap Thrills.” The track, which features Sean Paul, enters the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, roaring 71-39 in its seventh week on the chart.

— Gwen Stefani, This Is What the Truth Feels Like - No. 17 — With a 16-position descent, Gwen Stefani’s album is the second No. 1 in 2016 to fall from the top straight out of the top 10. It follows The 1975’s 1-26 tumble with I Like It When You Sleep… on the March 26 list. Stefani’s album shifted 23,000 units in its second chart week, down 73 percent.

— Bob Mould, Patch the Sky - No. 82 — As Bob Mould bows at No. 82 with Patch the Sky — the alt-rock icon’s 12th solo effort — he also scores his first No. 1 on a Billboard chart in nearly 10 years, as the set also starts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart. The vinyl LP configuration sold nearly 2,000 copies of its total 7,000 for the week. The new album also starts at No. 4 on Alternative Albums, No. 8 on Rock Albums and No. 6 on the Independent Albums chart. (Mould was last No. 1 on any Billboard chart back on May 18, 1996, when his self-titled album opened atop the Heatseekers Albums chart.)


— Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction - No. 160 — Guns N' Roses’ classic former No. 1 album Appetite for Destruction re-enters (No. 160; 5,000 units — up 32 percent) the same week the band played the Troubadour (April 1) for its first show since 1993 with founding members Axl Rose and Slash.

— Kiiara, Low Kii Savage (EP) - No. 192 — Buzzy singer Kiiara enters at No. 192 with her Low Kii Savage EP, earning 4,000 units. Over on Heatseekers Albums, the set starts at No. 13 with just over 1,000 copies sold. Her “Gold” single (from the EP) has been collecting fans since last summer, when the artist uploaded the track to Soundcloud. The track debuted on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart on Jan. 23 at No. 15, and reached No. 1 on the April 9-dated list. The track collected 2.6 million U.S. on-demand audio and video streams in the week ending March 31 (up 53 percent), and has accumulated 25.8 million in total.
