Which songs did your jaw drop at when you found out they would be released as a single?
Eli Young Band - "Say Goodnight" Kenny Chesney - "El Cerrito Place" (pleasantly shocked) Carrie Underwood - "Mama's Song" Carolina Rain - "Dealin'" Rascal Flatts - "Bob That Head" (maybe this was an experiment by Lyric Syreet Records? Like they said, "Just, how bad does a song have to be for this group to miss the top 10?...they found out, lol)
Tim McGraw - "Suspicions" Tim McGraw - "Kristofferson" Tim McGraw - "Nothin' To Die For" (this was a dream right? This didn't "actually" happen...)

Sara Evans - "You'll Always Be My Baby" I was sure that "Missin' Missouri" would have been the next single from Real Fine Place.

Cam - "Burning House"
Kenny Chesney - "Down the Road" (so happy they did, though -- I'd heard like three versions of this song, counting Mac's original, and thought it was an amazing song that would sadly never see the light of day)
Kacey Musgraves - "Follow Your Arrow" (as much homophobia and xenophobia as there still is in the country genre, I thought this wouldn't even make it on the charts)

I couldn't agree more with all of these songs. How is it possible that they were all released as singles off the Let It Go album but "Between The River and Me", "Train #10", and "Whiskey and You" weren't? Tim McGraw-"Truck Yeah" "Southern Girl" "Lookin For That Girl" Eric Church-"Cold One" "Like a Wrecking Ball" Toby Keith-"Mocking Bird" "Big Blue Note" "Red Solo Cup" "Get My Drink On" George Strait-"Twang" "River of Love" "Don't Make Me Come Over There and Love You" "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This" Jason Aldean-"1994" "Burning It Down"

Toby Keith - "Big Blue Note" I still remember the sticker on the CD saying "Featuring "Honkytonk U", "As Good As I Once Was" and "Big Blue Note"" when AGAIOW was out at radio, so I wasn't surprised it was a single. I still love "Big Blue Note" -- no shame at all.

Eric church - Smoke a Little Smoke
And I absolutely love the story behind it. A career saving song for him. The label wanted him to release something radio friendly (probably Young and Wild or Without You Here), but he did that with Love Your Love/Hell on the Heart, and while they went top 10, didn't really amount to much. Smoke a Little Smoke sold extremely well, gave him momentum for the next album era, and then Chief happened. Boom.

I still sometimes can't believe this wasn't a major hit for her. Absolutely love love love this song. My pick is Jerrod Neimann - Donkey. Just how did that even happen???

Tim McGraw-"Truck Yeah" "Southern Girl" "Lookin For That Girl" He went with those 3 but no one thought Blank Sheet Of Paper was good enough? Tim has had so many missed opportunities with singles imo, especially from Two Lanes of Freedom.

"Blank Sheet Of Paper' is one of the best written songs I've ever heard, the lyrics are just so good, the production and Tim's vocals on the song are great as well, such a shame it wasn't released as a single. I also agree about missed opportunities on Two Lanes Of Freedom, the tittle track along with "Nashville Without You", "Book Of John", "Number 37405" and "Friend Of A Friend" were all such great songs and instead of two of them being released as singles we got "Truck Yeah and "Southern Girl" instead, what a shame.

My pick is Jerrod Neimann - Donkey. Just how did that even happen??? The song's radio release was former Sony president Gary Overton's idea. Oops.

I could've sworn it was "You don't exist"... Either way, I'm one of the few who thinks that was blown out of proportion. Was it a smart thing to say? Probably not; so criticism was expected, but I think people thought he was totally disregarding artists like Aaron Watson and Sturgill Simpson and his comment was more geared towards how important it is for big label artists to gain traction with radio and their airplay.

That may have been his intention but it certainly did him in with the 'big wigs' in the industry as while they do WANT radio, they realize there is more than one way to get there. I'm sure Garth didn't like it much either.

I was always surprised that Lady Antebellum picked "Freestyle" as well that was hands down the worst song they've ever done.
Another song is well The Band Perry "Live Forever", I mean there had to have been a better option.
Lastly, Carrie Underwood releasing "Church Bells" still baffles me as there are such better songs on that album ("Choctaw County Affair" and "The Girl You Think I Am").

A retroactive one for me: "Lovin' All Night" by Patty Loveless. Besides the fact that she covered a song barely a decade old at the time, there's also the fact that Rodney Crowell's original is very frisky and sexual, but she completely neutered it into a cutesy, chaste shuffle. Just everything about Patty's single choice there is a headscratcher for me.
