Katz Format Study: Country Reigns
Katz Media Group has releaased its report for Spring 2004 National Format Averages, and it shows that Country is on the rise, with 12+ shares increasing in each of the past three years. Country has been the number one format for more than a decade and, as of this Spring 2004 report, enjoys a 54% advantage over the next closest competitor among Persons 12+.
According to study’s author Lisa Chiljean, "Any combination of these factors could be contributing to this positive turn of events for the Country format: a new and different influx of talent and music product coming out of Nashville, less fragmentation of the format within markets, less blurring of the lines between pure country artists and crossover Adult Contemporary artists, and a downturn in the shares for some of the Rock or Adult Contemporary niches."
Additional highlights of the Spring’s report include:
* The changing U.S. demographics continue to play a big role in the popularity of Radio formats. Ethnic formats – both Black and Hispanic – continue to grow and now account for four of the ten most popular formats across the country. Over the past decade, the number of stations used in this report for the Urban Contemporary, Urban A/C, Rhythmic CHR and Hispanic formats have increased from 342 to 593. The average share for these four formats has increased by 33% over the same time period.
* The country’s thirst for News and Talk remains strong. The number of stations programming some variation of News and/or Talk programming has increased from 326 to 535 in the past decade. However, increased fragmentation of the format, possibly affected by the expanding number of cable television news channels, has affected shares. An average of the top News & Talk formats (All News, All Talk and News/Talk) shows that total 12+ shares have declined by 14% since 1994.
* The Adult Contemporary format shows some mixed results this Spring. While the mainstream formats such as Soft A/C, Hot A/C and Adult Contemporary are all down, niches such at 80’s and Soft Rock have increased.
Katz analyzed 4,310 radio stations in 287 Arbitron markets to produce the figures for this study.
