After several threads have gone slightly off on a tangent in regards to the subject of dance radio stations, I thought I would just create a new thread that is just right for discussion of this. Here's what we've got so far.
Stuff like this really annoys me. I loved the Mynt song and still do; however, KTU added that in May of 04 and it's still in their top 5 on Mediabase, week after week. It was practically #1 the whole year, but landed at #2 for the year end countdown because Deborah Cox dominates on those. And speaking of her, "Something Happened..." still gets 15-20 plays a week, and it was added on 6-30-03, #1 for 03. Honestly. The rate at which these dance stations refresh and update is PAINFULLY slow. Maybe dance audiences other than us are resistant to change and hang on to a song as long as possible...but stations NEED to let go of some stuff but seem almost paralyzed. How come WKTU takes longer to jump on new songs? I thought they were considered one of the better dance stations? Adn the fact that they had those specific recurrents on the Year End list.

Great idea and looking forward to hear everybody's voice... We all have to support a better dance radio!

A radio station is always going to be more mainstream and less cutting-edge than hardcore fans, so hardcore fans are always going to be snobby and look down at radio stations.
KTU tries pretty hard to be a feel-good station, so I guess they don't shake things up very much. I listen to Energy 98 at work because of their Shoutcast stream, and I'm pretty happy with it, though I'd prefer more new stuff and less "Never (Past Tense)".

I listen to KTU alot and they ARE constantly playing the same songs and the funny thing is that I don't even mind. I love Sylver etc. but there's no getting past the fact that there are thousands more dance songs that they can play. I think considering that there really isn't a chart for Dance they think that people should be lucky that they are playing dance at all. BTW do you honestly think there is a big enough audience for Dance music to be able to dedicate a whole station's playlist to new and innovative dance music. The station would be a complete waste of money because they're would be only a few people tuning in on a regular basis. I honestly wouldn't mind having a dance station completely dedicated to dance hear in NY but with Urban music saturating the airwaves I just don't think that this would be a good invesment for anyone but the few listeners that they are marketing it towards.
On the other hand you could just request songs at your dance station and see if they have them and hopefully they will catch on.

They're a little more current-intensive than Energy 98 (playing just 1 golden oldie per hour), but their shoutcast stream is only offered at 32k - still probably OK for work. They majorly revamped their playlist about a month ago, and they sound great now. I rotate between E98, C89, and ESF, and that keeps me quite happy!

And I believe it's free. Just worth noting. ;) I like the Energy SF stream, although I prefer Energy AZ when it was online (the former PD has brought back the Energy 98 stream, so the sound still lives on). The one thing that annoys me about Energy SF is that music bed they play when they block out the commercials for the net feed. In an hour's time, I probably have to listen to that for a total of 8 to 10 minutes. And yes, it's actually enough to make me quit listening. I'd rather hear a PSA or actually, silence would suffice. Not that annoying repetitive bed. One other dance station of note - Z103.5 in Toronto. They are actually a dance-friendly CHR, but they do play a LOT of dance in rotation. It's not hi-fi, though it sounds as if it might be a 48k or 56k stream. www.z1035.comI'd also love to hear Diva 92.3 in New Orleans, and KTU in NYC, these are the only significant dance stations I haven't had a chance to hear yet, since they lack an internet audio stream.

That's the most relevent analysis I've seen on this thread! A radio station is just like any other business, they are around to make money. The bottom line is the almighty dollar, and they have to reel in the most number of listeners they can, so that their (hopefully) higher Arbitron ratings will allow them to charge more $ for advertisers. By playing the same songs constantly in rotation, they hope to cash in on the "average radio listener" just flipping around on the dial in their car, as opposed to the fervent dance music fan, whose numbers are probably a lot less.

"Music Reports will be placed every Wednesday starting April 27, 2005" The message above posted on Energy Arizona's website for a while but there's no spin report on the site yet! Can someone post their chart report of the week on here?

As many of you know, I have a blog that lists all the songs played on Energy 92.7 (SF). energybayarea.blogspot.comBut I'm not writing this to promote it. Many people still write in to the email address at my blog thinking they got the station, but they have gotten me. Despite the disclaimer, they still email. It's okay. Anyways, I got this email today which was quite, um, I don't know what to say. Here it is. I removed the names. I was a bit surprised at the fact that they wanted the old Party back. Considering many wanted it to go away, I am surprised that someone wanted it back. Party began in 2002, signed off in Early '04, then Energy signed on towards the end of '04. And we are here now. For those who have listened to Energy or have seen their collection of music will probably say that they like it better than Party, but then again, there is that select few who prefer the old. Party's complete library simkpti.blogspot.com/(you have to scroll down a little to where it says 2004) Energy's complete library energybayarea.blogspot.com/
