Overall this is a great album. Not sure if it's as good as Barefoot Blue Jean Night or Days Of Gold, but it's up there. It's a pretty commercial album for the most part, where a majority of the songs sound like they could be big hits. There's a lot of range on this one too. Yeah the Sublime, beachy style songs stick out the most, but then you have the very traditional sounding "LAX" and "When You Love Someone", the former a straight up show closer that impresses so much. Then you have "If He Ain't Gonna Love You", which is clearly influenced by Chris Stapleton big time (not just because he sings on it and write it, but because the style and sound of it). And then there's the familiar sounding stuff like "American Country Love Song", "After Midnight" and "You Ain't Going Nowhere". Those songs would have blended in effortlessly on the prior two albums.
Jake has hinted that "If He Ain't Gonna Love You" might be next, and the online critic reviews have been very strong. The digital response was nice as well. But I somehow just view that as a risky choice. It's not like radio is really dying to play a Stapleton song, so I don't know how much his vocals will help that one. It does offer something different for Jake, so it could very well be worth the risk of releasing. But after listening to this album multiple times, "Everybody Dies Young" stands out the most to me. It just screams big hit and Major succes to me. It's catchy and radio friendly, has a great message, and would most likely connect big time with country audiences. Plus it's still upbeat despite its slightly more serious lyrics. "When You Love Someone" might be the best song on the album, but it just seems too big of a risk for radio these days, and we ll saw what happened to "What We Ain't Got". "LAX" and "VW Van" probably won't even be considered for future singles. "American Love" and "Good Company" both sound similar to "Real Life" and might be risky. Of the two, "Good Company" seems the safer choice. Man is that song an earworm.
After 3 out of the past 4 singles suffered underwhelming results and all being slightly risky, I really want to see Jake play it safe this era to build some momentum. I normally don't encourage the safer choice strategy, but the scenario fits in this case. Luckily the safer choice are really good on this album and aren't dumb fluff.
My picks for singles: 1 American Country Love Song 2. Everybody Dies Young 3. Good Company 4. You Ain't Going Nowhere
What I think will be the singles: 1. American Country Love Song 2. If He Ain't Gonna Love You 3. Everybody Dies Young 4. When You Love Someone

Bought this on release day and was afraid I'd be disappointed after reading what some others had said. Great album by Jake! It's not as country as most would probably like it to be except for LAX. Very chill and positive vibes throughout the entire album.
Here's my ranking of songs: 1. LAX 2. American Country Love Song 3. Everybody Dies Young 4. After Midnight 5. You Ain't Going Nowhere 6. When You Love Someone 7. Where I Am 8. If He Ain't Gonna Love You 9. American Love 10. Good Company 11. VW Van
