This artist is...infuriating. I actually think most of these songs are lyrically and melodically well written and she takes some unique ideas and forms them into songs ("Quarter Life Crisis" and "There's A Guy" being the best examples)...but why in the world must there be rapping on a couple of these? Plus the pop style beat and production isn't my favorite thing either. Admittedly, most of the seven tracks are Pop songs with Country flare thrown into them ("Lightning", "Quarter Life Crisis", "My Heartache").
I don't mind her voice, but I get the reason people don't like it -- the vocal effects used on "You Part 2" was really bad and the rap bridge (which was cut out in the radio edit) was terrible but dare I say the song is okay, maybe even enjoyable if those aspects are taken out?..."You Part 2" is not part of this EP but it's the best example of Ilya Toshinsky (her producer) using it for her tracks.
I've actually seen Olivia interviewed a few times and she might be one of my favorite people in this business; her personality just strikes me as grateful and bubbly with her eagerness to answer questions asked to her. With how many interviews and radio visits are asked of these new artists (5:00 am wake-up calls and many times, not going to bed until midnight), it can be a grueling chore to exude a favorable demeanor and she's done it every time I've seen her.
Like I mentioned before, I like the song ideas of these tracks, particular "Quarter Life Crisis" and "There's A Guy"; however, the former is utterly destroyed by the vocal arrangement. "There's A Guy" is probably the best song on this EP and its lyrics are relatable and flow with the melody the way they need to -- it also has the most tasteful production of any song on this EP. I think "She Fits" is another pretty strong track. It might benefit her radio success to release something more substantial as her next single ("There's A Guy", "She Fits").
Olivia's from Houston and spent a few years in Los Angeles before moving to Nashville, so perhaps that's where she developed these uncountry aspects to her style. I'm starting to see why Big Spark has decided to invest so much money into her being their flagship artist, though.
I actually see talent in this artist, perhaps a lot of it (maybe an unpopular opinion), but her and her producer are becoming their own worst enemies at this point.

Agree with most of your assessment about the production - this ep however is a vast improvement from what we saw on "You Part 2".
I've changed my mind about Olivia based on this EP.. I found "You Part 2" annoying, but There is tons of talent there. I'm really enjoying this EP. I don't know if I see any hits here though, I hope she finds some material that works. I can relate to a lot of the stuff on this EP though so it's really working for me.

If anything from this EP will go to radio, it will be "My Heartache".

I really like the majority of the EP and personally I don't find it too pop for my taste, I'd say she's more or less on the same wavelength as Kelsea Ballerini. I hated You Part 2, but I think all these songs are vastly superior and with less weird vocals.

Outstanding EP.
For me she is occupying a space that sonically might be close to Kelsea, but subject wise is more mature.
Olivia sings about some serious relationship stuff (She Fits, Keychain, There's A Guy) where as Kelsea is all "hey boy with your hat back mmm i kinda like that". Fluffier is the word i guess. Olivia also touches on millenial issues with "Quarter Life Crisis".
I agree that this effort is stronger all around then her previous material. Production is solid to me and not overbearing like most nowadays. I hope a label steps in, grabs a single and puts it out there with some real $$ behind it.
"My Heartache", while sonically the most radio friendly, is the weakest song on here imo. "She Fits" "qlc" and "keychain" are standouts and might do well at radio. "She Fits" even has a Taylor thing about it i cant quite place but i like it.
Good luck to her!

I didn't like You Part 2 so I wasn't expecting to like the majority of this. I do like most of the songs, surprising. I find Keychain really catchy, She Fits is really close to home and Quarter Life Crisis is a nice song about something usually ignored as far as song themes go.
