How is it evidence of that? It's possible that its overall points would be higher if all three metrics carried the same weight. Are you saying it should be 1 sale = 1 stream = 1 AI? Or that they should adjust the formula to target an average of a third chart point contribution each from airplay, sales and streams? Either way, bad idea.

It's possible that its overall points would be higher if all three metrics carried the same weight. What does that even mean? If 1 audience = 1 stream = 1 sale, the chart would basically be identical the airplay chart, so obviously the three formats need to have different weights. The fact is that Cheap Thrills is only #1 on airplay, but not in sales or streaming, its only fair that its a weak #1. Ok, maybe not the same weight, but do the scales need to be tipped in favour of streaming? Another example would be CSTF vs OD. You could say it was more of bad luck that CT couldn't secure #1 on the digital end of the chart, rather than necessarily being "weak". Other songs have topped the digital chart selling less.

It's odd to me radio has dropped "Me Too" despite it being a consistent seller. ...and yet it's only managed to get up to #58 on spotify so far. A problem with Me Too on that front is it was never added to Spotify's pop/hottest hits playlists. I don't know why that was. Though even at that, NO still peaked in the mid teens on Spotify. Oh well. Single #3 has already been announced and Me Too still managed decent returns. Hopefully Better, even with it being more forgettable in my opinion, will revitalize the era a little bit.

I don't think there's been another #1 song in recent memory for which an official video hasn't been released, or even a relatively big top ten hit. Anyone know? The last one I think was in the 90s. And then maybe One Dance. Late comment but I think Can't Feel My Face was all the way at #2 before the video dropped, but the video didn't propel it to #1. It stayed at 2 for another week or so before getting its first week at #1.

It stayed at 2 for another week or so before getting its first week at #1. Probably Panda is the latest song before One Dance to hit #1 without promotional video (you can say official video). " Desiigner's debut hit "Panda" pounces to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated May 7)" "Approximately two-thirds of the track's Hot 100 points are from streaming, with the highest share (43 percent) of its streams from non-Vevo YouTube views, as no official video for the track has yet been released; an official clip is in the works, according to Def Jam." Billboard 4/25/2016 by Gary Trust
EDIT : Official MV was released later on May 17, 2016.

When was the last time an artist had two songs in the top 3? And If Let Me Love You has even remotely similar stats to Cold Water, then I'm pretty sure Justin will part of the top 2 songs. Let Me Love You is gonna have 2 problems. YouTube (there is a lyric video, but it might not get as much views because it's not official on DJ Snake's channel) and airplay. This is because it's in DJ Snake's album and is just album track (for now), not a single. Oh, and I forgot to answer the question. The last time an artist had 2 songs in the top 3 was early this year when Justin Bieber had "Sorry" and "Love Yourself" both in the top 2.

Streaming is the biggest way that music is being consumed and must hold the biggest weighting. Regardless of Panda's sales and AI in its weeks at and near the top of the chart, it was streamed so much that it was the most consumed/one of the most consumed songs of those weeks. Therefore, it got loads of chart points and charted high. With the rise of streaming and its concurrent surge in contribution to chart points, now more than ever the Hot 100 is ranking what people are actually listening to on a week-to-week basis. Yes, it has slowed the chart down a lot but it's the goal of the Hot 100 to be accurate, not fast/fluid.

Don't Mind really had a much faster rise and fall than most of us expected it would... Am I the only one thinking that this was hurt by the title? I bet if you go up to a random group of teens on the street and ask them what they think of "Don't Mind" by Kent Jones, they'll respond "what record is that again?". Then when you play it for them they'll go "Oh that record, yeah I like that". It is such an obvious summer smash, but the fact that the title "Don't Mind" gives zero hint to what the record is, was probably not a wise decision from a marketing point of view.

Streaming is the biggest way that music is being consumed and must hold the biggest weighting. Is it? I ask out of ignorance. I'd love to read the latest reports/ratings of streaming versus radio and other forms of consumption.

I don't know that measuring data for one song/the top song is the best comparison since with streaming people can listen to more than just the main popular songs...but I would like more data on the amount of people who use streaming, who download, who listen to radio, etc.

Songs should not be so heavily rewarded for taking the path of least resistance. Again, streaming has earned its place, I am for its inclusion, but there is a big difference between adjusting to the times and basically doing away with the two longstanding pillars that Billboard is known for.

The fact that Panda is JUST dropping out of the top ten with near non existent sales and airplay is proof enough streaming is weighted too heavily imo.

Thought I'd post this for the sales/radio/streams weighing discussion. Here are the percentages for how many of the total points each of the three metrics gave each song in the top 20 last week. Streaming seems to be weighted double what sales are, on average.

Streaming weighed twice as much as sales!?!? That's absolutely ridiculous. I understand that streaming is the most popular way to consume music and should be weighed the highest, but to be weighed twice as much as sales is a bit much. Perhaps it would be better for sales to be weighed as much as radio is according to the last post.

^ So on average about 25% for sales, 30% for airplay, and 45% for streaming. I'd say that is a fair distribution.
