Love this record.

I love this. I love seeing guys like Cody Johnson and Aaron Watson having sucess whether radio is behind them or not. I do think Johnson has a very radio-friendly sound. Whether you like the new Granger Smith album, it is a hopeful sign that some of these good "Texas" acts are going to have a chance to get bigger.
"The Only One I Know" is such a good song and I love the bridge, it's almost like he's howling and it fits the tone of the song very well. "With You I Am" could be a big radio hit really. Other highlights for me are: "Every Scar Has a Story", "Walk Away", "Kiss Goodbye", and "I Ain't Going Nowhere Baby".

I need to get into the Texas country scene more. This is good stuff. THIS is what modern country music should sound like. The production on the songs is modern, even with some programming/drum loops, but what keeps it country is the fact that there's country instrumentation a la steel guitar and fiddle. What a genius concept . I would love to hear this on the radio around here, but I don't think I will since I don't live in Texas.

If you like this, check out: Granger Smith (early stuff, but he was always more polished imo). Wade Bowen Randy Rogers Band Aaron Watson (More) Cody Johnson That's just off the top of my head. Wade Bowen is probably the best of them all, but that's more my personal opinion.

Wade Bowen is probably the best of them all, but that's more my personal opinion. Thank you! I've heard all the names but in terms of music I've heard it's just (early) Granger and Aaron Watson. I will certainly listen to Wade, Randy, and more Cody sometime soon. I agree with you on the Granger assessment. His older stuff has so much more lyrical depth than Remington. His older stuff sonically was also more organic in terms of production while Remington sounds like everything you hear on mainstream country radio. Everything including Don't Listen To The Radio and earlier is classic Texas Granger. Dirt Road Driveway is kind of half mainstream half Texas. For the record I do like Granger as an artist. Part of the reason probably is because I did a meet and greet at a show back in March. Since he's not too big yet it was very cheap! He's the only country artist I've personally met haha. He was a nice guy. I didn't know of Aaron until The Underdog. That's also some good stuff. "Bluebonnets" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. ^ Let me add Turnpike Troubadours (for all you fiddle lovers out there), Flatland Cavalry, and Jason Boland to that list! I have to admit, I had heard some mixed opinions coming into this album but I find this to be pretty damn solid. The writing isn't great in some spots and at 14 tracks, this just screams to cut some of the filler. The sound however? Absolutely excellent. It's modern and accessible and yet undeniably country. It's the PROPER way of saying that country music has evolved. Awesome thanks! I agree with you. Nothing groundbreaking lyrically but an awesome country sound. The sound is more meaningful to me to be honest than the lyrics. "It's the PROPER way of saying that country music has evolved." - Amen to that

I'd add Casey Donahew Band, Josh Abbott Band and Randy Rogers Band to the list of Aaron Watson, Wade Bowen and Cody as great Red Dirt Singers.
Cody is incredible in concert. I've seen him in Austin TX as well as twice here in Michigan. Very high energy, great vocals and an incredible showman.
Cody's in my top 5 along with Aaron Watson, Josh Abbott Band, Dierks and Tim McGraw.
Glad that he and Aaron are getting well deserved national attention!

It's really too bad that he couldn't have got some better album artwork.

The sound is more meaningful to me to be honest than the lyrics. "It's the PROPER way of saying that country music has evolved." - Amen to that I forgot Blackberry Smoke...they're more southern rock, but their new album sounds good with Country music. Cody Johnson has some really good stuff from the past couple albums ("Me and My Kind" is a personal favorite). On the note of Aaron Watson, "Off the Record" felt like a song ripped from the best of the 90s neo-traditional stuff. What I think we are seeing with a lot of the Texas acts (and to a lesser extent mainstream acts like Joe Nichols, Chris Young, and Josh Turner) is a "modernizing" of older sounds. This record is polished but doesn't come off as "fake" or "produced". Which is what usually gives the past couple years of Texas acts more staying power with me and has made me a big fan of a lot them.

I need to get into the Texas country scene more. While I was at the Mark Chesnutt concert up in Nebraska I was chatting with some people about music and they kept referencing how much they love Red Dirt music. I kept nodding my head as the discussion continued but had to interject and say "Y'all me Texas Country right?" Lol it was a good/funny conversation but yes so many Texas country artists to check out...I've lived here for over ten years but only recently started getting into it, especially so when bro-country came along and mainstream country radio began its downward turn. I soon started looking for another avenues to discover music and thats when I started listening to more artists from Texas (other than say Radney Foster or Pat Green). I still have yet to check out this album but I will give it a full listen soon.

I listened to this today. It was my first experience listening to him, and I really enjoyed this album. I really like "Half a Song", "Chain Drinkin'", and "Every Scar Has a Story". There were many great songs here. And FGL, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton and company should take note "Chain Drinkin'" is how you do a good time drinking song.
Side note, does anyone else think he sort of sounds like Tim McGraw.
