Jeezy Earns His Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Trap or Die 3'11/7/2016 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Kenny Chesney, Meek Mill & Avenged Sevenfold Debut at Nos. 2-4 Jeezy notches his third No. 1 album -- and eighth consecutive top 10 -- on the Billboard 200 chart with the arrival of Trap or Die 3. The album, which was released on Oct. 28 through YJ/CTE/Def Jam Records, earned a little more than 89,000 units in the week ending Nov. 3, according to Nielsen Music. The set sold 73,000 in traditional album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Nov. 19-dated chart (where Jeezy bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Nov. 8. All eight of Jeezy’s charting albums have reached the top 10, stretching back to 2005’s Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Aug. 13, 2005-dated list. He previously led the tally with 2008’s The Recession and 2006’s The Inspiration. “I wanted to take it back to creating music,” Jeezy recently told Billboard. “My first two albums, we made from scratch. We didn’t even have a studio… In its entirety, (the new album is) real, authentic, quality street music.” Jeezy’s last chart entry was 2015’s Church in These Streets, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 off a start of 107,000 units (98,000 in traditional album sales). Country superstar Kenny Chesney keeps up his hot streak on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new album, Cosmic Hallelujah, debuts at No. 2 with just under 89,000 units earned (79,000 in traditional album sales). The album also starts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, which ranks the best selling albums of the week. Trap or Die 3 edges out Cosmic Hallelujah for the top slot on the Billboard 200 after the two albums spent most of the tracking week vying for No. 1. While Cosmic Hallelujah is the top selling album of the week, Trap or Die 3 earned a greater overall equivalent album unit figure, owed to the popularity of its tracks on streaming services. In addition to Trap or Die 3’s 73,000 in pure album sales, it also tallied 3,000 in track equivalent albums and 13,000 in streaming equivalent albums. As for Chesney’s album, it sold 79,000 copies, earned 7,000 track equivalent units and 2,000 in streaming units. (All totals are rounded to the nearest thousand.) Cosmic Hallelujah is Chesney’s 12th consecutive charting album to debut inside the top four of the Billboard 200, going all the way back to 2004’s No. 1 set When the Sun Goes Down. In total, he has notched 13 top 10s (including the new album) -- and all of them bowed in the top four. Chesney first debuted on the Billboard 200 a little more than 20 years ago, when Me and You entered the list at No. 196 on the Sept. 28, 1996-dated chart. It eventually peaked at No. 78 the following year. He didn’t reach the top 40 until 2000, when his Greatest Hits album debuted and peaked at No. 13. Cosmic Hallelujah also starts at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, marking his 14th No.1 on the tally. He’s now in a three-way tie (with Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson) for the fourth-most No. 1s on the chart. Ahead of them are George Strait, with 26, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson (16 each) and Tim McGraw (15). Cosmic Hallelujah’s current single, “Setting the World on Fire,” featuring Pink, earned Chesney his 27th No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, and 23rd leader on the Hot Country Songs chart. Meek Mill’s new mixtape album DC4 debuts at No. 3 with 87,000 units (and 45,000 in traditional album sales), marking his third charting effort. Of its 87,000 units start, a whopping 37,000 were streaming equivalent album units. DC4 is the fourth release in his Dreamchasers mixtape series, the first to chart, and the first to receive a wide commercial release. The rapper last hit the Billboard 200 with his second studio effort, Dreams Worth More Than Money, which debuted at No. 1 on the July 18, 2015-dated list and spent a total of two weeks at No. 1. It was his second chart-topper, following his debut studio set, 2012’s Dreams and Nightmares. Avenged Sevenfold’s surprise release, The Stage, takes a bow at No. 4 with 76,000 units (and 72,000 in traditional album sales). The set arrived without warning on Oct. 28, well ahead of its previously announced release date of Dec. 9. Frontman M. Shadows said the band opted for a surprise release because it’s more exciting than the traditional roll out of an album and gets its music out to an audience “without any preconceived notions.” The new set is the band’s first for Capitol Records, after releasing four studio efforts for Warner Bros. The Stage is the group's fifth top 10 effort. In January, Avenged Sevenfold announced it was attempting to extract itself from its unfulfilled contract with Warner Bros., citing California’s “seven-year rule.” (The “seven-year rule” of the California Labor Code allows parties to leave personal service contracts under certain circumstances after seven years have passed.) In turn, Warner Bros.’ parent company, Warner Music, sued the group for breach of contract. The case is set to head to trial in 2017. The band’s last studio effort, 2013’s Hail to the King -- which was not a surprise release -- debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 159,000 copies sold in its first week. It marked the group’s second leader on the chart, following 2010’s Nightmare. Even though Avenged Sevenfold and Warner Bros. are at odds, the label still has an upcoming album from the band on its release schedule. On Dec. 2, Warner Bros. will release the greatest hits album The Best of 2005-2013. After a top four filled with debuts, the rest of the new top 10 is fairly quiet. Lady Gaga’s Joanne dips from No. 1 to No. 5 in its second chart week, earning another 61,000 units (down 70 percent). Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas falls 3-6 with 41,000 units (down a modest 32 percent). Drake’s Views drops out of the top five for the first time, after spend 26 weeks locked in the region. The album descends 5-7 with 36,000 units (down 6 percent). Views is one of only seven albums to have spent its first 26 weeks on the chart inside the top five. The soundtrack to Suicide Squad moves 7-8 with 28,000 units (down 10 percent) and the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton slips a spot to No. 9 with 26,000 units (down 14 percent). Closing out the top 10 is Michael Buble’s Nobody but Me, which falls from No. 2 to No. 10 in its second week with 25,000 units (down 73 percent).

Don't worry, I'm sure the Pinnacle Award winner is crying all the way to the bank. Decent numbers for Kenny Chesney, but not mind blowing numbers, either.

www.hiphopdx.com/news/id.41164/title.hip-hop-album-sales-jeezy-has-trifecta-of-1-albums-with-trap-or-die-3Hip Hop Album Sales: Jeezy Has Trifecta Of #1 Albums With "Trap Or Die 3"November 7, 2016 | 8:24 AM by Victoria Hernandez Jeezy and Meek Mill went head to head this week when they both dropped projects that were continuations of their popular series’. Jeezy comes out as king on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart as Trap or Die 3 lands him yet another #1 title. Meek Mill beat out Drake’s VIEWS this week, though, so that has to count for something. A$AP Mob also makes a splash with the release of Cozy Tapes Vol. 1 honoring A$AP Yams. Jeezy Snags Third #1 Album With “Trap Or Die 3” Jeezy’s Trap or Die mixtape changed the game when it was released in 2005. The Atlanta legend might not have done anything groundbreaking on Trap or Die 3, but the project is a landmark one for The Snowman as it’s his third #1 album. The LP sold 89,000 units in its debut on the chart and was streamed 19.8 million times. Jeezy has also taken the top spot with 2006’s The Inspiration and in 2008 with The Recession. Meek Mill Beats Out Drake This Week With “DC4” Drake’s VIEWS has reigned for 27 weeks on the chart and this sales cycle finds the project at its lowest slot yet, landing at #7. Meek Mill overtook the Toronto superstar with the debut of his Dreamchasers 4 landing at #3 with 87,000 equivalent album units. If Meek had dropped DC4 the same day as VIEWS as was rumored, he would not have even come close to Drizzy’s 1 million sales. But perhaps this is a small victory in the ongoing war between the two. A$AP Mob Do A$AP Yams Justice With “Cozy Tapes Vol. 1” A$AP Yams is smiling down on A$AP Mob as the group paid tribute to their late leader with Cozy Tapes Vol. 1. The project lands at #13 in its debut on the chart after a Halloween release. Featuring the singles “Yamborghini High,” “Crazy Brazy” and the Tyler The Creator-assisted “Telephone Calls,” Cozy Tapes follows the success of A$AP Rocky’s two #1 albums and A$AP Ferg’s two Top 10 releases. Chart Watch: Upset! Jeezy Edges Out Kenny Chesney for #1 [Yahoo Music] Paul Grein Writer
There’s a genuine upset on this week’s Billboard 200. Jeezy’s Trap or Die 3 edges out Kenny Chesney’s Cosmic Hallelujah to debut at #1. Chesney’s album sold more copies than Jeezy’s (by a margin of 79K to 73K), but Jeezy’s album came out ahead because the chart measures what Billboard calls “multi-metric consumption.” The chart formula takes into account digital track sales and streaming in addition to traditional album sales. By that measure, Jeezy’s album sold a little more than 89K. Chesney’s album sold just under 89K.
The two albums were in a tight race all week. On Friday, Hits (Billboard‘s chief rival) declared Chesney the winner, by a margin of 90K to 87K. Billboard didn’t publish this week’s chart results on its website until 12:43 a.m. (EST) this morning, several hours later than usual. This suggests that Billboard‘s chart team was checking and double-checking the numbers in this tight contest.
Two factors are largely responsible for this chart upset — the new chart system (which Billboard and Hits adopted in December 2014) and a very exciting baseball game, a 10-inning heart-stopper in which the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians to land their first World Series championship in 108 years.
Let me explain.
First, it has become clear that the new multi-metric system works to the advantage of hip-hop and R&B releases, and to the detriment of country albums. This is the seventh time that a country album has been the week’s #1 seller in traditional album sales, but has lost out to a hip-hop or R&B album on the Billboard 200 after the other data is factored in. This previously happened to Don Henley’s Cass County (which lost to Fetty Wap’s Fetty Wap), Joey + Rory’s Hymns (which lost to Rihanna’s Anti), Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (which lost to Kanye West’s The Life of deleted), Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest, Dierks Bentley’s Black, and Aaron Lewis’s Sinner (the last three of which lost to Drake’s 13-week chart champ, Views).
Second, viewership for the CMA Awards, where Chesney was presented with the Pinnacle Award, suffered this year because it aired opposite the deciding Game 7 of the World Series. Had it not been, the CMAs — a reliable ratings winner — doubtless would have gotten a larger audience, and the salute to Chesney would have been seen by more people. (Chesney was only the third recipient of the Pinnacle honor, following Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift.)
While these two factors played an undeniable role in this week’s outcome, this is also simply the latest sign of the potency of rap. This first became clear way back in December 1992, when Ice Cube’s The Predator debuted at #1 ahead of Whitney Houston’s The Bodyguard soundtrack. It was a shocker to see a gangsta rap album beat out a mass-appeal soundtrack. (The Bodyguard rose to #1 the following week and remained on top for 20 non-consecutive weeks.)
Trap or Die 3 is Jeezy’s third #1 album; his first since he shed the moniker Young Jeezy. Under that name, he topped the chart with 2006’s The Inspiration and 2008’s The Recession. Jeezy has a nearly 10-year span of #1 albums. He is, quite simply, bigger than his media profile would suggest. This is his seventh consecutive top five album.
Jeezy’s first two Trap or Die mixtapes were released in 2005 and 2010. Trivia note: Trap or Die 3 is the second #1 album in the past two months to include the hip-hop term “trap” in its title. It follows Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight.
Cosmic Hallelujah is Chesney’s 11th consecutive studio album to reach the top three. That’s his entire studio output since No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems was released in the spring of 2002. It’s his 13th top 10 album overall.
Chesney’s album enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (which has spent 24 non-consecutive weeks on top). It’s Chesney’s 14th #1 country album.
The second single from Chesney’s album, “Setting the World on Fire,” has topped the Hot Country Songs chart for the past four weeks. The song is a genre-bending collabo with P!nk. It’s Chesney’s 23rd #1 country hit.
Trivia note: Cosmic Hallelujah isn’t the first album with the word “cosmic” in its title to reach the top five. The B-52’s had a #4 album titled Cosmic Thing in 1990. In 1969, Janis Joplin had a #5 album which had an alternate spelling of “cosmic” — I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!.

^More here: www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-upset-jeezy-edges-out-kenny-chesney-for-1-173915789.htmlTop AlbumsMeek Mill’s mixtape DC4 debuts at #3. It’s the fourth release in Meek Mill’s Dreamchasers mixtape series (hence the title); the first to receive a wide commercial release. It follows two studio albums by Meek Mill which made the top five. Avenged Sevenfold lands its fifth top 10 album as The Stage debuts at #4. The album was inspired by the writings of Carl Sagan and Elon Musk. Lady Gaga’s Joanne drops from #1 to #5 in its second week. Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas drops from #3 to #6 in its second week. This will almost certainly be the third year in a row that Pentatonix have had the year’s best-selling holiday album. Only one artist in the Nielsen era (which dates to 1991) has had the year’s best-selling holiday album three times. That’s saxophonist Kenny G. His years with the holiday sales champ (1994, 1996 and 1999) weren’t consecutive. After spending its first 26 weeks in the top five, Drake’s Views drops from #5 to #7 in its 27th week. The Suicide Squad soundtrack dips from #7 to #8 in its 13th week. The album logged two weeks at #1. Hamilton dips from #8 to #9 its 58th week. The Broadway cast album peaked at #3 in the wake of the Tony Awards. Michael Bublé’s Nobody but Me drops from #2 to #10 in its second week. (Bublé announced last week that that he is putting his career on hold because his 3-year old son has cancer.) Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. They are: Korn’s The Serenity of Suffering, Chris Tomlin’s Never Lose Sight, Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, and Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker. Tove Lo lands her second top 20 album in a row with Lady Wood. Her debut, Queen of the Clouds, peaked at #14 in 2014. Look for Bon Jovi to land their sixth #1 album next week with This House Is Not for Sale. The Chainsmokers’ Collage EP and Alicia Keys’s Here will probably debut at #2 and #3, respectively. Now 60 will also open in the top 10.

Regarding the discrepancy in the HITS SPS Album Chart for last week and that BB 200 in terms of positions and numbers, HITS wrote this very interesting article regarding on how Nielsen Soundscan weighs certain missing data and how BuzzAngle deals with them:
THE WEIGHTING IS THE HARDEST PART: BUZZANGLE'S LIDESTRI ON A CHART DISPUTE
Jim Lidestri of BuzzAngle, whose company now powers HITS’ charts, has weighed in, so to speak, on why Kenny Chesney was #1 on our most recent SPS and Album Sales charts, while Jeezy took the top spot on Billboard’s Top 200. Lidestri describes the methodology of Billboard data partner Nielsen as “outdated, inaccurate and unfair,” due to its use of “weighting” for physical sales (more about that in a moment). Some players at Sony Nashville are said to be contesting Billboard’s decision to crown Jeezy, and arguing that at least one indie physical retail outlet was radically over-represented in the count.
Weighting is the process of artificially increasing the sales that were counted to make up for the sales from stores that don’t report their data. “This practice had a place 20 years ago, but has no place anymore,” Lidestri asserts. “Nielsen weights both chain stores and independent music stores. There simply aren't any chain stores selling music that don't report their sales, so weighting this category results in a completely bogus number. And while there are a few hundred independent music stores that don't report their data, they are the smaller stores—and the methodology Nielsen uses to weight them has no mathematical accuracy whatsoever.”
He notes that Chesney's raw consumption numbers were 5K higher than Jeezy's album, but that Jeezy had 1k+ more sales at indie stores and 2k+ more sales at chain stores. These two segments were weighted in SoundScan and resulted in adding another 5k+ artificial consumption units to Jeezy's total, propelling it just ahead of Chesney's. This, Lidestri says, is a prime example of how the practice “causes an artificial movement in chart position.”
In addition to its undue sway on rankings, Lidestri continues, “these weighting factors change each week, thereby making week-over-week or year-over-year analyses impossible. This practice also leads to possible gaming of the charts. It is relatively easy to see which stores are getting the higher weighting factor, which allows someone wishing to get an unfair advantage to ‘purchase’ a few hundred titles at one store—which gets translated in Nielsen's system to many thousand.”
BuzzAngle’s practice of using only raw numbers, we should add, is one reason the company was chosen as HITS’ data partner.
In the meantime, the Chesney-Jeezy battle continues behind the scenes, almost like some kind of … disputed election result.
