Subject: Jermaine Stewart "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off": Samples & Covers
One of my favorite song from the 80s is getting the Eric Prydz's treatment. There are more than 4-5 Eric Prydz-style remakes, and a couple of "proper" remakes. Let's count the ones I know of:
1. The Sunset Strippers "Good Time": My fave is of the bunch. Jermaine Stewart was signed to Arista Records in the US and Ten Records for the rest of the world. Since The Sunset Strippers are signed to the SONY-BMG offshoot dance label Direction Records, it's obvious they are the ones who will be able to clear the sample.
2. Digital Dog "Clothes Off": Their original version had Jermaine's vocals, but now that it has been promoted properly (on the MOS label Boss Records no less) it now boasts new vocals by a female "singer" that seems to be on the verge of death... her vocals are awful. Even more peculiar is that the original Digital Dog mixes have an altered set of lyrics: ("We can dance and take our clothes off"), while the other mixes, by Pressure Unit and Paul Roberts, maintain the original lyrics ("We don't have to take our clothes off"). Since this is coming from the same parent company as Eric Prydz's "Call On Me", I'm already imaging a video full of scantily-clad woman to match the lyrics.
3. Dynamic Rockers & Terry Johnson Jr. "Good Time": This one is out on France's Stamina Recordings, and just like The Sunset Strippers' version, it also has Jermaine's vocals. Let's see if SONY-BMG allows them to clear the sample.
4. Horny United "Good Times": This one comes from Germany's Attractive Records. This one includes the same vocals as the version by... Digital Dog (!).
I do not like this one at all.
5. Da Playaz Vs. Clea "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off": This is a proper cover by, of course, the Popstars: The Rivals.... (The Losers!). These are the girls who lost their chance to be part of Girls Aloud. So far they have released two singles, and neither of them set the charts on fire. They also toured with Daniel Bedingfield. By looking at their site, it looks like they have lost a member or two. Their version is OK, not bad, but not good either. On the plus side, they have been recording material for the debut album on Sweden... and that's always a plus.
