Tracking the Women on the country radio (billboard) airplay charts, because tomato's deserve their own thread:
11. Carrie Underwood - Dirty Laundry 16. Maren Morris - 80's Mercedes 17. Miranda Lambert - Vice (last week) 20. Lauren Alaina - Road Less Travelled
And that's it for your top 30. Of these only Carrie looks likely to break the top 10
Bubbling under (31-40) Kelsea, LBT (I'll count them since Karen is singing lead), RaeLynn, Runaway June

The sad thing is it's not going to get any better for females, there needs to be some major changes made, Nashville is to male dominated, from record executives to radio programmers , I think record labels sign female singers just so they won't get sued for discriminating against women.

I thought it might be nice/interesting, to have a separate thread to specifically look at how well or poorly women are doing on country radio, and to keep track of it.

BTW that means that for this week women or women led acts make up 4/30 or 13% of the top 30. They make up 0 of the top 10.

While I might not have anything to contribute, I like the idea of this thread. I am more into male singers, but it's glaringly obvious how few females are charting these days.
Sad thing is, I don't like too much any of those female songs. Maybe if more were to chart, I could take my picks lol
edit - Anyone knows why Cam never released anything after Mayday?

"Mayday" was the 3rd single off of her debut album, and once it bombed on the charts Cam had pretty much zero momentum left. The fact that she is both a female and a new artist counted against her and would have made it too risky for the label to push for a 4th single. I don't know for sure, but I would be willing to bet that that is at least partly what happened!

Thanks bboat11! Makes sense, even if it's a little sad.

On a positive note, we have seen many new females score at least one or two top 10 singles over the past few years (Cassadee Pope, Cam, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Jana Kramer). And while most of these artists have not been able to keep a consistent record with radio, at least there seems to be more open-mindedness to new female singers in the last few years. But the fact that I'm arguing that country radio is embracing more new women by showing my 6 examples (and I may be blanking on 1 or 2 more), shows how sad the country radio climate is for women.

Ok, so decided that I'm going to keep this simple. For tracking purposes introducing a women on the radio points system, a song at #1 would get 30 points, 2=29,....#30=1 point.
So for this week the women on country radio points = 60
Carrie = 20 Maren = 15 Miranda = 14 Lauren = 11
So full stats for 11/26 BB week: points = 60, 13% of the top 30, 0 in the top 10.

Sad thing is, it's not going to get any better for females singers cause nobody is willing to do or say anything, You have some women singers supporting others, but where are the men at supporting them, You have alot of male singers who have daughters and if they want to be singers, it is basically going to be the same for them. Carrie basically has radio to herself when it comes to scoring hits, everything she releases is going to #1., The problem with Nashville , radio and record executives, they are to male dominated and till that changes women are going to continue to be treated like 2nd class citizens.

Hello Tomato slayage at the grammy's 4/5 solo noms, 3/5 album noms, and Lori Mckenna with a country song, and all the Americana noms!
Or you know the opposite of country radio. And on that cheery note, on to this weeks stats:
Carrie rises to 7 Maren holds again at 14 LBT moves to 18 Lauren up 1 to 19 Kelsea up 1 to 27
Outside of the top 30: Raelynn is #31 (I want this to go top 30 so bad), Runaway June is 33, and Miranda is 37
Stats pack: Total points 70 - +8 5/30 artists 17% no change 1 in top 10

Overall these numbers and Grammy nominations aren't going to have any postive effect on how women are treated by so call country radio, women will continue to come in 2nd to men when it comes to radio airplay, use to be Carrie and Miranda who were the only women who got airplay, now mostly Carrie, other women are played I think mostly to keep them from suing country radio for sex discrimination. There needs to be some major changes in Nashville as long as men are in charge of record labels and radio programmming, women of Country music will continue to be 2nd.

Mixed Bag for the women on the BB chart this week. On the plus side, all the women/roups inside the top 30 moved up the charts. On the downside Raelynn and Runaway June remain stuck just on the outside looking in, thanks to getting jumped (predictably) by Luke and Dierks. Also will be interesting to see how long Maren holds on.
Women artists/groups in top 30: Carrie, Maren, LBT, Lauren, Kelsea
Just on the outside: Raelynn #31, Runaway June #32, Miranda #36
Total points this week: 80 +10 from last week 5/30 artists 17% (still no change) 1 in top 5 (Carrie)

4 out of the 5 women led acts in the top 30 on BB moved up this week, with the exception being Maren, who dropped two spots. RaeLynn, and Runaway June remain just on the outside as they were passed by a couple of the guys. Miranda is also slowly moving up. On a programming note, this will be the last update till after radio returns from the holidays.
In the top 30: Carrie, LBT, Maren. Lauren, Kelsea
Total points: 84 +4 from last week 5/30 artists 17% (no change) 1 in top 5/10: Carrie

Raelynn and Miranda sit just outside the top 30. Miranda will push through, I'm really hoping that we get some recumbents so Raelynn makes it as well. Maren is starting to drop, and Lauren is stalling, so we'll see how long they hang on.

Sad to say but this is basically how it will be in 2017, the women of so call country music won't get no love from radio programmers , not unless your name is Carrie or Kelesa, use to be Miranda , but I don't really see her having many major hits , the men will continue to dominate the charts, Country music and So call country radio should be ashame of how bad they treat the women singers ,

Really a shame... :(

Basically the charts are super clogged right now, and it's hurting everyone. Raelynn and Runaway June are basically stagnant (but keeping bullets). Miranda is gaining audience/spins but not as fast as some others. The good news is that Maren had a decent week, and LBT entered the top 10. Anyways to the numbers. Total points: 86 +2 from last week 5/30 artists 17% no change 2 in top 10: Carrie and LBT, Carrie is #2, and has a shot at #1 this week.

So yeah, Carrie missed #1 on BB, but at least she got it on Mediabase. With the chart looking to do some house cleaning in the next couple weeks, we could see some movement. Unfortunately I suspect Maren will get cleaned out, and with Carrie just being a featured singer on Keith's new single, we'll lose some women, depending on the vocal arrangement in the new Lady A song. Also Miranda should be in the top 30 next week.
This weeks stats: Total points 94 +8 from last week (new peaks from Lauren, Kelsea, and LBT) 5/30 artists (no change) 2 in top top, 1 in top 5

Sad thing is , nothing going to change far as women getting airplay, radio will play certain women, but overall the women will still be far behind the men, to bad the women of today's so call country music can't find the success on the charts like they did in the 90's.

It is my hope that over time we'll see a gradual increase, and the reason I am doing this thread is to try to keep track of the movement. At the moment their are 4 women who seem to be able to get radio play with multiple singles: Carrie, Miranda, Kelsea, and Maren + Little Big Town. But that's two new women just in the past couple years (fingers crossed that they keep it up)

Total points 99 +5 from last week 6/30 artists 20% of the chart! +1 with Miranda entering the chart The Lady A single doesn't qualify (it's not a female lead). Runaway June at 31, and RaeLynn at 33 could get in with some house cleaning, but Raelynn could also go recurrent.

Thanks for doing this....women should be on the radio more often in the country genre, and until the powers that be realize that people are sick of repetition, I wonder if anything will change.

Well we had some house cleaning, and take a second to savor this chart folks, because we have 7 women led singles! Ok to the stats Total points: 89 -10 from last week (Carrie going recurrent from top of the charts, everyone else moves up) 7/30 artists 23% +1 from last week, and a new year high, as both Runaway June and Raelynn enter the charts With some house cleaning both Runaway June and Raelynn were able to finally crack the top 30. Unfortunately their are no other women in the top 60 after them (and one or both may lose spots this week to Lady A, Rascal Flatts, and the debuts from ZBB & Sam Hunt). So basically, enjoy this weeks chart.

The predictable debuts of ZBB & Sam Hunt, RF re-enters, Lady Antebellum looks poised to enter next week, have sent Runaway June & Raelynn down and out of the top 30. Total Points: 82 -7 from last week 5/30 artists 16% - 2 from last week
