What are some strange, jarring, or otherwise ill-fitting production choices you've heard?
* The screaming guitar solo in "Over You". Jarringly out of place in an otherwise tender song.
* I think some of Garth Brooks' songs are a little TOO cleanly produced. This combined with Milton Sledge's soft drumming, really undermines "Fever" and "Workin' for a Livin'" in particular.
* Patty Loveless, "Keep Your Distance." The first line auto-tunes the words "cross" and "path", but nowhere else in her discography is there any trace of auto-tune.
* "You Look Like I Need a Drink". Maybe it's just me but Justin's vocals sound like they were mixed too quietly.
* SHeDAISY's choice to do a slow, somber rendition of "Jingle Bells" on their Christmas album.

There's a screaming electric guitar solo that comes out of nowhere after a false ending in Tim McGraw's "When She Wakes Up (And Finds Me Gone)." It's supposed to be dramatic and emotional, but comes off as cheesy and out of place in my opinion. I'm not against sudden electric guitar solos in otherwise quiet, understated songs on principle, but I never cared for this one for some reason. I do quite like the song otherwise.

It's supposed to be dramatic and emotional, but comes off as cheesy and out of place in my opinion. I'm not against sudden electric guitar solos in otherwise quiet, understated songs on principle, but I never cared for this one for some reason. I do quite like the song otherwise. Hahaha I LOVE that part of this song!!!!!! But to each their own :) I mostly love the epic drum fill when the song suddenly starts back up, and I could take or leave the guitar work.

Most of David Frizzell and Shelly West's stuff has very odd production. The instruments are so quiet they're nearly inaudible, but huge walls of backing vocals are pushed all the way to the front. Also, one of the backing vocals sounds like it was slowed down to make it deeper (most notably the deep "amigo" near the end of "Jose Cuervo").
"I'm Gonna Hire a Wino..." is still a classic though.

Thought of another one: Corey Crowder's production does not fit Chris Young at all. It's very loud and amateurish sounding (not quite as bad as Michael Carter, at least), and it doesn't fit his otherwise still fairly traditional themes. "Think of You" is a great song, but a more traditional production would've been even better on it.

"Room To Breathe" by Chase Bryant. It's a great song, but the production is one big head scratcher. It's the definition of odd and out of place IMO.

My mom just said today that the guitar solo part in the middle of "Blue Ain't Your Color" doesn't really make any sense being there.

"History in the Making" by Darius Rucker. The electric guitar lead is really compressed throughout, and the chorus is pretty brickwalled. It's not Dann Huff or Frank Liddell bad, but considering how clean Frank Rogers' production usually is, it really stands out to me.

There's this song where I feel the drums and the full band just comes at the wrong time. It's pretty weird to me.
Also, there's something really wrong going on on Kelsea's Stilletos, towards the end of the song, when there's a little break and she sings the chorus for the last time. I don't know if it's timing, but it sounds awful to me.

I love the way they did that little pause for emphasis -- it's not exactly an unheard of tactic, either.

The Reba/Kelly Clarkson version of "Because of You". The whole song is so bombastically produced to begin with that it sounds like mid-2000s Rascal Flatts, but one part really stuck out to me. During the bridge ("I watched you die, I heard you cry every night in your sleep..."), Reba's vocals appear to be mixed really quiet relative to both the instruments and Kelly's counterpoint. I literally can't make out a single word Reba's singing until "And now I pray in the middle of the night for the same damn thing" because of how badly everything else drowns her out.
I've also noticed weirdly mixed vocals on:
* "You Look Like I Need a Drink" by Justin Moore (he sounds really muffled on good speakers/headphones) * "Still Holding On" by Clint Black and Martina McBride (it's blatantly obvious during the bridge, starting at "And there's a place you'll always be", that Martina is mixed way lower than Clint so that her belting doesn't drown him out) * "Monday Morning Church" by Alan Jackson (I've mentioned this before many times; Patty Loveless' harmony vocal sticks out like a sore thumb) * "Already Gone" by Sugarland (during the round at the end, it's obvious that they mixed Kristian's part louder and on a different channel than the other two parts Jennifer is singing)

Bumping for another:
The crash cymbals all over the verses to "Lettin' the Night Roll" by Justin Moore. That water tower’s got the sun going down behind it / [crash crash] / If there’s a good time in this town girl we’re gonna find it / [crash crash]... It makes the song sound way too harsh at times.
