Congrats to The Weeknd for being the only artist "guaranteed" to hit #1 with a new single who actually managed it, including:
Katy Perry Bruno Mars Ariana Grande
And such long shots as:
Lady Gaga Britney Spears
To those of you who sanely did NOT claim they were guaranteed a #1, I salute your wisdom.

#1 song with only 86,000....my oh my how sales have taken a beating, which is why I think it was easier for some of these Christmas classics to reach new peaks or appear at all! Not really. Their sales match relatively as they always have. It's the streaming that's helped. Streaming numbers for Christmas songs are much higher this year than last year, even when accounting for the increase in streaming. That makes sense, though. The more people get into the streaming, the more "traditional" trends will be seen. Just like how digital sales were at first dominated by artists that appealed to a younger crowd (The Click Five and High School Musical went to #1 on iTunes, for example, lol) because it was that demographic that did the most downloading. Streaming used to be dominated by hip hop acts, but now not quite as much as fans of other genres start to discover streaming. It'll be interesting to see what happens when streaming gets even bigger in the next few years. We'll know the peak is coming when country music starts being able to keep up with the rest, just like digital sales.

Oh yes glad we have a new #1
A little sad 24K Magic will not peak higher than #4, streaming did not come through as I thought earlier, Spotify is such a different force now than when Uptown Funk ruled. The Sales are solid for 2016 era but airplay though disappointed. I thought 24K Magic would have the airplay run Don't Wanna Know is having now

Since songs doing well in Spotify also do well on the Hot 100. I wish we could have data for Apple Music as well if it's gaining any momentum

13 changes since last week counting re-entries and entries. J Cole album purge begins: all but Deja Vu (35) are safely away from the top 50, and 2 are gone altogether along with the 2 hype tracks. Weeknd purge continues as the songs around the 70s/80s are near the bottom now, though Party Monster slips back to the top 50 as the singles gain. Lots of unexpected gains: all 3 Moana songs (though We Know the Way hasn't re-entered), Chantaje in the top 70, Alone up in the 80s, and You Was Right powering on (Lil Uzi? More like Lil Slugger with that determination!). I do notice its partner Come and See Me has finally bit the dust though.

www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-pentatonix-celebrate-christmas-at-no-1-190311267.htmlChart Watch: Pentatonix Celebrate βChristmasβ at No. 1by Paul Grein,Writer Yahoo Music,December 27, 2016 Top SongsThe Weekndβs βStarboyβ (featuring Daft Punk) jumps to No. 1 on the Hot 100 in its 14th week. Itβs his third No. 1 hit, following βCanβt Feel My Faceβ and βThe Hills.β Itβs Daft Punkβs first. The duoβs βGet Luckyβ (featuring Pharrell Williams) spent five weeks at No. 2 in the summer of 2013, en route to a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. βStarboyβ logged eight weeks at No. 2 on its way to the top spot. Only two other songs β Justin Bieberβs βSorryβ and Outkastβs βThe Way You Moveβ β have spent so much time in the runner-up spot before ascending to the top. βSorryβ spent all eight of those weeks behind Adeleβs βHello.β βThe Way You Moveβ spent all of those eight weeks behind Outkastβs other smash at the time, βHey Ya!β βStarboyβ spent five weeks behind the Chainsmokersβ βCloserβ (featuring Halsey) and three weeks behind Rae Sremmurdβs βBlack Beatles.β βStarboyβ surges from No. 5 to No. 1 in its 14th week on Top Digital Songs, displacing βI Donβt Wanna Live Foreverβ by Zayn and Taylor Swift. Thatβs the slowest climb to No. 1 on that chart since Flo Ridaβs βMy Houseβ finally reached No. 1 in its 25th week in February. This weekβs jump was boosted by 69-cent sale pricing in the iTunes Store. The song sold 86K copies this week, up from 58K last week (when it was not on sale). The Weekndβs follow-up, βI Feel It Coming,β which also features Daft Punk, jumps from No. 33 to No. 25 in its fifth week. It will soon top its No. 22 peak position to date. This song, even more than βCanβt Feel My Face,β shows Michael Jacksonβs strong influence on the Weeknd. Rae Sremmurdβs βBlack Beatlesβ (featuring Gucci Mane) dips from No. 1 to No. 2 in its 15th week on the chart. The song spent six weeks at No. 1. The Chainsmokersβ βCloserβ (featuring Halsey) holds at No. 3 in its 21st week. The song logged 12 weeks at No. 1. Bruno Marsβs β24K Magicβ holds at No. 4 its 11th week. This is its highest ranking to date. βJuju on That Beat (TZ Anthem)β by Zay Hilfigerrr & Zayion McCall rebounds from No. 8 to No. 5 in its 13th week. This matches its highest ranking to date. Ariana Grandeβs βSide to Sideβ (featuring Nicki Minaj) dips from No. 5 to No. 6 in its 17th week. The song has climbed as high as No. 4. DJ Snakeβs βLet Me Love Youβ (featuring Justin Bieber) rebounds from No. 9 to No. 7 in its 20th week. The song reached No. 4. Maroon 5βs βDonβt Wanna Knowβ (featuring Kendrick Lamar) rebounds from No. 10 to No. 8 in its 11th week. The song has climbed as high as No. 7. βBad Thingsβ by Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello rebounds from No. 14 to No. 9 in its eighth week. This is its highest ranking to date. Drakeβs βFake Loveβ rebounds from No. 12 to No. 10 in its eighth week. This matches its highest ranking to date. After debuting in the top 10 last week, the Zayn/Taylor Swift collabo βI Donβt Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)β and J. Coleβs βDeja Vuβ both drop out of the top 10 this week. Coleβs drop didnβt surprise me, but Zayn/Swiftβs certainly did.

I am hoping against hope that "Last Christmas" at the very least goes top 20 next week. All Christmas songs are done as of this week, but maybe Last Christmas hangs in there because of George Michael. But don't expect to hit top 20 its streaming isΒ dropping like a rock while based onΒ Kworb estimates its sales are up to 25k from 8k. Even so, ot could drop from the chart altogether.

He's making fun of the people who said that, by the way. Those are just the artists in the last half of the year that posters here kept saying they were guaranteed a #1 hit with their debuts, which of course is not true.

Thanks for getting my point -- I had so many people adamantly tell me I was wrong because I said no one was guaranteed a #1.
Justin and Zayn are actually two great examples of artists nobody was predicting for #1 who did it anyway.

...until you remember that aside from Deja Vu leaving and All I Want for Christmas coming in, literally every other position in the top 10 stuck (which...how is that even possible?).

I agree it is nice to see Starboy at #1, if anything because it's nice to see a different song top the chart, but I'm surprised to see so many of you think it's the best #1 since The Hills. So you guys think it's better than Hello or Closer, or even Sorry or Love Yourself? Expectedly, there seems to be a Weeknd bias in the workings

No one is guaranteed a #1. No one ever is, but some artist are more likely to get a #1 than others.

No one is guaranteed a #1. No one ever is, but some artist are more likely to get a #1 than others. For now, you can arguably include whenever they release a new album: Rihanna, The Weeknd, Adele, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars. If Taylor Swift and Drake manage to do that with a song from their new albums, then I'd include them as well. If Katy Perry fails to do so with a single from her next album, I'd take her off that list. Same deal for Bruno Mars if he can't do so with a single from 24K Magic.

No one is guaranteed a #1. No one ever is, but some artist are more likely to get a #1 than others. Yeah but as a discussion piece, how does that even matter? A year ago, few would have said "Justin Timberlake is more likely to have a #1 hit this year than Bruno Mars is with his album's first single" yet it happened. So now what? Nothing. It's a dead comment unless there's a purpose to it like some sort of game or gambling or whatever.
