After my first listen through, I really enjoyed a lot of what I was hearing, though I wasn't immediately in love with anything. I'll give it a few more listens to see if it manages to click, which I think is what's going to happen. "I Feel in Love with the Devil" and "Bigger Wow" were the immediate standouts to me.

First album I’m not instantly love with/ feel it wasn’t enough for the absence. Crush has grown on me immensely, Goddess for the vocal, Birdie for its contemporary sound.

Listened once so far and I already think it’s her best since Under My Skin. My least favourite songs are the title track and Dumb Blonde. Can’t wait to give it another listen.

Some songs are a little bit weak for me.

I Fell In Love With The Devil and Bigger Wow screams to be a single. I was kinda surprised that they chose Tell Me It's Over over them

Her last three albums have been half and half for me: half solid, half medicore. Like her writing, really hit or miss. She could have made one kick ass album (split with her signature acoustic pop midtempos and mindless melodic uptempos) had she condenced all 3 into one 12-track release tho:
01.) Head Above Water 02.) Birdie 03.) Push 04.) What The Hell 05.) Smile 06.) Wish You Were Here 07.) Goddess 08.) Here's To Never Growing Up 09.) Rock N Roll 10.) 17 11.) Bigger Wow 12.) Tell Me It's Over
Then she would have had four solid releases and a much stronger catalog imo.
"Dumb Blonde" is just almost painfully awful to me. :X

But you're missing one of the best songs she's ever released: "Give You What You Like."

I think “Goddess” may be her best shot at connecting with Hot AC. What an impeccably produced song.

A lot of the album blended together for me (aside from earworm Bigger Wow) but I'm loving the 3 bonuses! Pretty sure I Want What I Want is a cover, I remember it from the car wash scene in Wild Things. There’s 3 bonus tracks?!

Head Above Water Birdie I Fell in Love with the Devil Tell Me It’s Over Dumb Blonde It Was in Me Crush Goddess Warrior
I’m impressed at how solid this album is and easily think it’s her best work behind Under My Skin. The production is rock solid and she sounds fantastic (it’s amazing Lyme disease didn’t ravage her voice the way it did Shania’s - not that the two are vocally comparable [no shade to Shania] but just an observation). In a perfect world, radio would be kinder and a few of these songs would become new signature tunes in her catalog as they deserve to be.

So is Dumb Blonde that's on the album without Nicki? Yes, it’s the original solo version. Only the version with Nicki is on Spotify. Overall this is kind of meh to me. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just kind of boring to me. Birdie sounds like something from Under My Skin to me. Bigger Wow sounds like something from a kids movie soundtrack. It Was In Me sounds like a soundtrack song. Goddess is probably my favorite from the album, but not something i would seek out. Its just a really flat record, with the really jarring Dumb Blonde smashed in the middle for no purpose whatsoever.

After a few listens, I think this album is stronger song-for-song than Goodbye Lullaby or Avril Lavigne. There's far less filler than either of those albums. The one song I can't get into is "Warrior," mainly because the writing is too lazy/generic for an artist as deep into her career as she is. But there are some really nice highlights - particularly "Souvenir," "It Was In Me," "Goddess," and the title track.
She's in great voice on this record. I've always liked her voice, but I can't remember the last time it made my jaw drop like it did when I first heard the last minute of "It Was In Me." Glad she's back and overcoming the trauma of her Lyme disease.

Her best vocals on record EASILY. I put the album on during my flight back to Austin and took a nice nap. Edit: Went back through this at home, or at least some songs. Pitchfork review, which I basically agreed with on first listen. pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/avril-lavigne-head-above-water/But yeah, I am actually surprised at how good she sounds and I have actually always liked her voice, especially on I'm With You and Wish You Were Here, but yeah, crazy that she was able to really draw strength from her fight with Lyme. I find Goddess so silly. The chorus (the way her voice goes up on TREATS is irritating and the "ba-nah-nahs" is just...nope. But, it might grow on me as a cult, campy classic. Bigger Wow is like Radio Disney but cute. Again, she sounds great. I would much prefer to hear this than that dreadful Nicki song. I love Head Above Water and Tell me It's Over and Crush for sure. Love Me Insane is good, too. I believe I will buy this because I support her and loved her last two albums much more than her older stuff. Forgotten is SUCH a smash though, omg. Tell Me It's Over should be her signature song. Damn girl. I wish this album would be in at least the top 3 of iTunes but whatever, she has a Christian hit and that is pretty cool. Queen of Diversity.

Projected to debut at #13 with 25-28k SPS (21-24k sales).
Avril Lavigne debuted at #5 with 44k so the fact she’s pulling in 1/2 that amount 5 years later and as an independent artist is respectable!

Shame this is gonna be her first album not to debut top ten... There’s always the adjusted figures will bring her final total inside the top-10; I’ve seen it happen before and she’s less than 3k SPS behind the #10 on HITS.

Shame this is gonna be her first album not to debut top ten... Or Top 5 lol. I think the reviews of the album are fair.. Head Above Water is the best song, and I don’t see much else working for singles, but Birdie and IFILWTD are getting videos apparently

This is such a solid album. The vocals had me shook and the melodies are pure bliss. Only songs I don't care about are Souvenir and Warrior (does it sample the lead single? lol). Goddess had huge potential but the chorus brings it down a lot but no big deal because the first half of the album hits HARD (yes, Dumb Blonde included). Bigger Wow is probably my fave followed by It Was In Me, Devil and Head Above Water.

Can't stop listening to "Goddess." So good. I don't foresee any singles from this project going anywhere, but I'd love if they gave this song a push.

I could see Bigger Wow do something potentially. It's like a mix of 90s melodic pop with more present day (2014ish? haha) production.

I need to give Head Above Water an actual listen. I got through Dumb Blonde but got pulled away. I went to take a look at her discography and a bunch of singles and expanded editions have been added to Spotify. Haven't listened to Alone from Best Damn Thing in ages.
