www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7633326/pentatonix-christmas-album-billboard-200-chartPentatonix's 'Christmas' Album Hits No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart12/26/2016 by Keith Caulfield Vocal group Pentatonix scores its second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as A Pentatonix Christmas jumps from No. 2 to No. 1 on the latest list, earning 206,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 22 (up 32 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 185,000 were in traditional album sales (up 33 percent). It’s the first holiday album at No. 1 in five years, since Michael Buble’s Christmas ruled the tally for five consecutive weeks on the charts dated Dec. 10, 2011, through Jan. 7, 2012. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Jan. 7, 2017-dated chart (where Pentatonix rises to No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Wednesday, Dec. 28 (one day later than normal, due to the Christmas holiday on Dec. 25). Pentatonix previously led the list with its self-titled album, which debuted atop the list in 2015. A Pentatonix Christmas was released through RCA Records on Oct. 21. It debuted at No. 3 on the Nov. 12-dated chart, and has never ranked lower than No. 6 on the list in its nine weeks on the chart. Avi Kaplan, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi and Kevin Olusola of Pentatonix perform on stage during the 84th Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center on Nov. 30, 2016 in New York City. The album benefits from not only holiday-fueled purchases (after all, it is a Christmas album) as well as a sale price in the iTunes Store (for just $7.99), but also a number of TV appearances from the group during the tracking week. The act's Dec. 7 performance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! repeated on Dec. 16; NBC's A Pentatonix Christmas Special (which premiered on Dec. 14) received an encore airing on Dec. 17; they sang on NBC's America's Got Talent Holiday Spectacular on Dec. 19; and they performed on Fox News’ Fox & Friends on Dec. 21 and the syndicated Rachael Ray Show on Dec. 22. A Pentatonix Christmas is the group's sixth top 10 album overall, and third holiday effort to reach the region, following 2014's No. 2-peaking That's Christmas to Me, and the 2013 PTXmas EP, which climbed to No. 7. Pentatonix’s latest No. 1 also earns the largest sales week for a holiday album in two years, since Pentatonix’s previous holiday set, That’s Christmas to Me, sold 203,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 21, 2014. In fact, the last act that wasn’t Pentatonix to sell more in a single week with holiday album was Justin Bieber, who sold 225,000 copies of his Under the Mistletoe in the week ending Dec. 25, 2011. Further, A Pentatonix Christmas is the first album to earn its first week at No. 1 by climbing there -- as opposed to debuting or re-entering at No. 1-- since Rihanna’s Anti vaulted from No. 27 to No. 1 in its second chart week, on the Feb. 20-dated list. Also notable, since A Pentatonix Christmas reaches No. 1 in its ninth week on the list, it logs the slowest continuous climb to No. 1 (thus excepting re-entries at No. 1 from Prince’s The Very Best of Prince and Chris Stapleton’s Traveller) since the March 16, 2013-dated list, when Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox reached No. 1 in its 12th week. Speaking of Mars, back on the new Billboard 200 chart, his 24K Magic rises two spots to No. 2 with 114,000 units (up 54 percent) while The Weeknd’s Starboy stays steady at No. 3 with 101,000 units (down 7 percent). The previous week’s No. 1, J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only, dips 1-4 with 90,000 units (down 82 percent). Pentatonix’s That’s Christmas to Me holds at No. 5 with 78,000 units (up 20 percent). Garth Brooks’ new boxed set, The Ultimate Collection, jumps 13-6 in its second chart week (64,000 units -- up 75 percent), granting the superstar his 18th top 10 album. Among country acts, Brooks is now solely in second place with the most top 10s, behind only George Strait, who has 20 top 10s. (Brooks was previously tied with Tim McGraw, who has 17 top 10s.) As for the rest of the new top 10, the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton is a non-mover at No. 7 with 58,000 units (up 21 percent), Metallica’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct ascends 11-8 with 53,000 units (up 30 percent), The Rolling Stones’ Blue & Lonesome rises 10-9 with 52,000 units (up 21 percent), and the Moana soundtrack dips 8-10 with 51,000 units (though it’s up 7 percent).

www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-pentatonix-celebrate-christmas-at-no-1-190311267.htmlChart Watch: Pentatonix Celebrate ‘Christmas’ at No. 1by Paul Grein, Writer Yahoo Music, December 27, 2016 Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas becomes the first album of Christmas music to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Michael Bublé’s Christmas five years ago. It’s the first Christmas album by an American artist to reach No. 1 since Josh Groban’s Noel in 2007. (The last three Christmas albums to reach No. 1 were by foreign-born artists — Bublé and Justin Bieber, both from Canada, and Susan Boyle, from Scotland.) Pentatonix are only the second group in chart history to top the chart with a Christmas album. The first was Mitch Miller and the Gang, a singalong ensemble that topped the chart with Christmas Sing-Along With Mitch in 1958 and Holiday Sing Along With Mitch in 1962. This is Pentatonix’s second No. 1 album. Pentatonix (a non-holiday album) debuted at No. 1 in November 2015. It’s the group’s third Christmas release. Their EP, PTXmas, reached No. 7 in 2013. Their album, That’s Christmas to Me, hit No. 2 in 2014. Pentatonix are the only act in history to reach No. 1 with one Christmas album and the top 10 with two other Christmas albums or EPs. A Pentatonix Christmas moves up to No. 1 in its ninth week on the chart. That’s the longest continuous run on the chart for an album before it finally reached No. 1 since Bruno Mars’s Unorthodox Jukebox, which hit No. 1 in its 12th week in March 2013. A Pentatonix Christmas is the first Christmas album to spend its first nine weeks inside the top 10 since 2013, when Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped in Red also did this. (The leader in this regard is Josh Groban’s 2007 smash Noel, which spent its first 12 weeks inside the top 10.) Pentatonix has a second album in this week’s top five. That’s Christmas to Me (which spent two weeks at No. 2 two years ago) holds at N. 5 in its 32nd week on the chart. The album tops the 2 million mark in U.S. sales this week. It reached the 2 million mark faster than any other Christmas album since Bublé’s Christmas, which topped that mark in its first Christmas season, 2011. That’s Christmas to Me is No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 14th (cumulative) week. A Pentatonix Christmas ranks No. 5 for the year in traditional album sales. It this week pulls ahead of three albums on that list — the Hamilton cast album, twenty one pilots’ Blurryface, and The Very Best of Prince. By pulling ahead of Blurryface, it becomes the best-selling album by a group or duo in 2016. This is the second time that Pentatonix have had the year’s best-selling album by a group or duo. They also took this title two years ago with That’s Christmas to Me. This is the sixth time in the past 10 years that a Christmas album has appeared in the year’s top 10. By contrast, in the preceding 16 years (1991-2006), only one Christmas album (Kenny G’s Miracles—The Holiday Album in 1994) appeared in the year-end top 10. Explanation: Though album sales in general have fallen off in the past decade, holiday albums have held their own — and thus are becoming more important relative to all other albums released. This is the third year in a row that Pentatonix have had the top-selling holiday album of the year. Nobody else has taken the holiday title three years in a row since 1991, when Nielsen Music began tracking U.S. music sales. Deep trivia: Pentatonix are from Arlington, Tex. Clarkson, whose Wrapped in Red was the best-selling Christmas album of 2013, is also from Texas. So the Lone Star State has given us the act with the best-selling Christmas album the last four years running. Top AlbumsBruno Mars’s 24K Magic jumps from No. 4 to No. 2 in its fifth week. This equals its highest ranking to date. The Weeknd’s Starboy holds at No. 3 in its fourth week. The album debuted at No. 1. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only drops from No. 1 to No. 4 in its second week. All four of Cole’s albums have logged one (and only one) week on top. Garth Brooks lands his 18th top 10 album as his 10-CD opus The Ultimate Collection rebounds from No. 13 to No. 6 in its sixth week of release. Among country acts, only George Strait has had more top 10 albums (20). Tim McGraw is in third place (17). This is Brooks’s third boxed set to crack the top 10. It follows The Limited Series (six CDs, No. 1 in 1998) and Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences (six CDs and two DVDs, No. 1 in 2013). The collection is No. 1 on Top Country Albums for the second week. It’s Brooks’s 16th No. 1 country album. The Hamilton Broadway cast album holds at No. 7 in its 65th week. The album peaked at No. 3 in the wake of the Tony Awards in June. This is its 18th week in the top 10. Metallica’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct rebounds from No. 11 to No. 8 in its fifth week. The album debuted at No. 1. The Rolling Stones’ Blue & Lonesome inches up from No. 10 to No. 9 in its third week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 4. The Moana soundtrack drops from No. 8 to No. 10 in its fifth week. The album peaked at No. 5. This is the 20th consecutive week that at least one soundtrack has appeared in the top 10 on the Billboard 200. That’s the longest such run since 2014-2015, when one or more soundtracks appeared in the top 10 for 40 consecutive weeks — thanks largely to Frozen and Guardians of the Galaxy. Post Malone’s Stoney and Michael Bublé’s Christmas drop out of the top 10 this week. Kid Cudi lands his fifth top 20 album with Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’. Trey Songz hit No. 2 in 2010 with an album with a similar title — Passion, Pain & Pleasure. Tony Bennett’s Tony Bennett Celebrates 90 debuts in the top 40, giving Bennett a nearly 60-year span of top 40 albums. He first cracked the top 40 in February 1957 with Tony. (He was just 30 — younger than Bruno Mars is now.)

The set surges by 75 percent to 64,000 equivalent units (all from traditional album sales) in the week ending Dec. 22, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now with 18 top 10s, Brooks breaks a tie with Tim McGraw (17) for the second-most top 10s among core country acts in the Billboard 200's 60-year history. George Strait leads with 20. (Among all artists, The Rolling Stones boast a record 37 top 10s.)

Its new album, A Pentatonix Christmas, sits at No. 1, while its previous full-length holiday set, 2014’s That’s Christmas to Me, peaked at No. 2 and just surpassed 2 million in total U.S. sales. It sold another 61,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 22, which brings its cumulative sum to 2.02 million. That’s Christmas to Me holds at No. 5 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, earning 78,000 units (up 20 percent). Pentatonix has a third holiday set, the EP PTXmas, which was released in 2012. It has so far peaked at No. 7 on the chart, and has sold 500,000 copies. That’s Christmas to Me, A Pentatonix Christmas and PTXmas are the vocal group’s three top-selling albums. The act’s next-biggest seller is their 2015 No. 1 self-titled album (not a Christmas set), which has sold 483,000. In total, the group has sold 4.5 million albums in the U.S. since its debut set, PTX: Volume 1, was released in June of 2012. — Original Broadway Cast Recording, Hamilton: An American Musical - No. 7 — The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton continues to sell strongly, as its total sales rise to 951,000. That sum moves it up from No. 10 to No. 9 on the list of the best-selling cast recordings since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. (It jumps ahead of the original London cast recording of Les Miserables, which is pushed from No. 9 to No. 10 with 914,000 sold since 1991. The album was released in 1986.) — Soundtrack, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - No. 29 — The film’s soundtrack arrives at No. 29 with 23,000 units (21,000 from traditional album sales). The new movie is set in the Star Wars cinematic universe, but it’s not part of the main Star Wars saga of films. The Star Wars saga has launched seven films thus far, and its most recent release was 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The latter movie’s companion album debuted and peaked at No. 5 in January 2016. The Force Awakens was the sixth Star Wars film soundtrack to reach the top 10. Of the seven main Star Wars saga films, Only Return of the Jedi, in 1983, missed the region. It peaked at No. 20. While the Star Wars series produced six top 10 albums, none have reached No. 1. The closest the series came was with the first film, Star Wars, which saw its album spend three consecutive weeks at No. 2 in 1977. (It was stuck behind Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which ruled the list for 31 nonconsecutive weeks.) — Nine Inch Nails, Not the Actual Events (EP) - No. 31 — The album debuts on the chart from just one day of digital sales, on Dec. 22, with 22,000 sold. The set went on sale via the band’s official website on Dec. 22, and then became widely available on Dec. 23, so we should see a big jump for the album on the Jan. 14-dated list, as that chart reflects the tracking week of Dec. 23-Dec. 29. — Adele, 21 - No. 81 — The diva’s second album -- and former No. 1 -- jumps back into the top 100, rising 103-81 (13,000 units; up 37 percent), for a 247th nonconsecutive week in the top 100. That’s the second-most weeks within the top 100 since 1963, when the chart combined its former separate stereo and mono albums charts into one overall ranking. The album with the most weeks in the top 100 is Metallica’s self-titled album, with 269 weeks in the region.
