Sam Hunt just dropped a new song; I don't see it on iTunes yet, but it's on YouTube and Soundcloud. He also updated his Facebook picture to a blank white picture that simply says "Sam Hunt Drinkin' Too Much". (No confirmation that it will be a radio single so I'm putting it in the non-singles forum for now; also, this personally doesn't sound like a single to me...like, at all) www.drinkintoomuch.com/

I'm not a fan of this at all, and I liked most of Montevallo. This is even less country...all he does is talk during the verses. It's like rapping but it's not fast enough, so yeah, I'd pretty much call it just talking.
But the lyrics in this one are just...idk. I'm not sure how to feel about them. It sort of chronicles a relationship Sam had and how it fell apart during and after his initial rise to fame. Here are the lyrics, as best as I could make them:
[intro]
Pour a drink and take a sip of it Feelin' like a hypocrite Couple more and I won't give a sh*t I never used to talk I never used to talk like this
[first verse]
I'm sorry I named the album Montevallo And I'm sorry people know your name now And strangers hit you up on social media I'm sorry you can't listen to the radio Or drive out to the place we used to get peaches down in ?
I know you want your privacy And you got nothin' to say to me But I wish you'd let me pay off your student loans With these songs you gave to me Remember the first time you stayed with me Overpacked and drove up and went to the CMAs with me
*You said that will be you up there one day, just wait and see* - this line is only in the acoustic version for some reason Two years later it felt like you were a million miles away from me And I was the one on stage drunk barely holdin' on on ABC Hope your dad still prays for me
[chorus]
Drinkin' too much, drinkin' too much Since you been gone I can't get gone enough I'm on top of the world I'm goin' down I'm gonna drink it all 'til you're not around
Drinkin' too much, drinkin' too much Since you been gone I can't get gone enough I'm on top of the world I'm goin' down
I'm gonna drink it all 'til you're not around
[second verse]
A year ago I was in a hotel room in Phoenix Wonderin' if it's ever okay to lie 'Cause I knew the truth would make you wanna die But I told you everything And you told me to have a good life
But you still couldn't believe it was really goodbye Every night you'd fill the bathtub up And lie there for hours Put your face under water and cry I never wanted to be a heart breaker Turn your sisters and their friends into matchmakers
I know you think my dreams came true But since you've been gone Singin' these songs is just somethin' to do The only dream I ever had was you I hope you know I'm still in love It's the kind that you can't fall out of
[chorus]
Drinkin' too much, drinkin' too much Since you been gone I can't get gone enough I'm on top of the world I'm goin' down I'm gonna drink it all 'til you're not around
Drinkin' too much, drinkin' too much Since you been gone I can't get gone enough I'm on top of the world I'm goin' down I'm gonna drink it all 'til you're not around
[third verse]
I know this might seem like a contradiction And the last thing you need is more unwanted attention But you changed your number and moved And this is the only way I could reach you So wherever you are, turn it up and listen
Hannah Lee I'm on my way to you *Nobody can love you like I do* - and this line is only in the studio version I don't know what I'm gonna say to you But I know there ain't no way, know there ain't no way Know there ain't no way we're through
[piano outro]

Man, I got used to the talking in his other songs but I don't think I'll ever get used to it in this song. So boring and bland, I'm hoping it's not a radio single.

Whoa, I agree this is not Country (can't see it being a radio single)...but the lyrics...
I'm wondering if maybe his label (MCA Nashville) allowed Sam to release this song at the start of the year, in an effort to reach out to this girl that's detailed in the song? I mean, if it ever gets put up on iTunes, it would be a huge seller, so I could see it benefiting the label getting it out there...but the lyrics are really personal...almost too personal. If the women in the song had her privacy hampered due to Sam's debut album being named Montevallo (he did say on Sirius/XM when the album was released that it was named for the girl's hometown, in this song, and I believe gave her name out...). That's all based off my memory, but I'm not unfamiliar with the story he's describing because I've heard it before from Sam.
It's the furthest thing from Country music he's ever done though (yes, I've heard his debut album), from the vocal arrangement to the production.

Sam posted this on his Facebook at midnight too. This is almost definitely his lead single.

My guess is just Sam putting new music out for his fans. I would be floored if that was a lead country single.

I love Sam Hunt, but this would NEVER work as a single so I'm hoping that's not happening. I know this is Sam, but for a single, this is way out there even for him. However, I don't hate this song nearly as much as I should. That said, I don't particularly care for it either lol. He needs a much stronger song for a lead single if he wants it to do well.

This literally sounds like a Drake album cut. Not crazy atrocious but not really exciting or good either.

I get the appeal of this song. But my gosh this is just not my cup of tea like at all.
With country music moving towards a more soulful or meaningful not to mention the resurgence of traditional country music Sam Hunt manages to screw it up in my opinion as while this song sounds personal it sounds so boring that I honedtly am not all that interested.
I do hope this isn't what the lead single but at the same time Sam Hunt is well Sam Hunt and I can see radio playing this, if they do however I see this really stalling out and for a lead single that's not good at all, hopefully this is just a buzz song, kinda like how "Friend Zone" was for Danielle Bradbery a little over a year ago.

I CANNOT wait for the Kendrick Lamar remix and for this to win the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration next year. However, if he intends to sell this as country, of any sort, he can just be shown the ****ing door right now. Not really sure what I just listened to?

There's little chance this is the lead single. We've said things to the affect of "this will not be played on Country radio" when he released "Break Up In A Small Town" but "Drinkin' Too Much" is literally talking through the entire track, start-to-finish, with blatant Pop style production. The way Sam's debut album at radio went, I'm fully expecting hourly airplay for an unheard song and dropping a song on New Year's Eve (Saturday at midnight) isn't that. I think this could be his label letting Sam release the song because it's personal and it can benefit the label and the fans getting the song out there.
I think the song musically is atrocious, regardless of what genre it is...but the song is autobiographical about a specific women Sam was involved with when he broke it big in 2014. It almost sounds too personal if you ask me. Lyrically, it is pretty interesting...but musically, yes, I can't stand it.

Honestly, this is very out there. But I really like it. The overlying theme is a typical country theme, even if the lyrical execution is different.
Everyone bitches about Sam Hunt's sound, but it doesn't bother me. And I think that his lyrics are really his strength.

This song creeps me out. I mean from a song perspective it's to much talking. But lyrically, man if I was the girl, this feels like stalking and invasion of privacy..big time. This isn't a song you release publicly (unless you have her permission of course).

This most definitely isn't Country music, but I quite like it for whatever it is LOL I just don't see it as a single though... it's too out there and personal in a way to make it connect to all kinds of people, I guess

Love it! Wonder if country radio will play this. And while I want this song to do well, I don't think country is the place for this song.

Not the lead single, but something to tie over the fans. He's also back with Hannah if you look at his IG. This is a masterpiece. Will be an album cut, but not a single. Love both versions, but especially the acoustic. They also got engaged Nov. 9th. If you have followed them (including her personal IG) over the years, this is an amazing apology/tribute to her. Love!

On a country scale....yeah no. As a song though, I get what he's trying to do - sing about his regrets and apologize to this girl for the wrong he's done to her. Like seak said up above though, there's times where this is just getting too creepy (how does he know what she specifically does in her bathtub?!?) There's also the whole personal factor of this. I remember someone once said here that they couldn't relate to Chris Janson's "Holdin' Her" because it was too specific, and really that's how I feel with this. If Sam had any sort of vocal personality to carry the emotion of the song through, maybe it would be different. However, he's not singing....at all. Not that's the bad for the song in general (meaning, without regard to genre), but as a whole this doesn't do much for me. I think this sums it up perfectly for me. Excellent post.

Easily the furthest thing from country he's ever done. Even further than "Break Up in a Small Town".
I kinda like it though? The lyrics are really well-written, and I do like the chorus, but the talking will need to take some getting used to.
