I still think it's unlikely this is the lead single, even though some media sites are claiming so. Probably their assumption. I think the label would have different plans for releasing the new single considering its anticipation after his debut album. Just seems too low-key. I agree it's most likely just for the fans.
If it does turn out to be the single, I see it flaming out like "Vacation." We've cried foul about Hunt singles before, saying there's no way radio gets on board (only to be wrong) but this is far different from those songs. Country fans like relatable songs and this is WAY too personal for a radio hit.
If his album leans more toward this sonically, I could see him having some trouble in the future. Country fans will start to abandon ship, and non-country fans will still be under the impression that it is country solely because it will be promoted as such. It could become a situation where he is locked out of the markets. He'll always have HIS fans, but I can't see the broad appeal continuing if this is the direction he is looking at. Especially with the genre twisting back in a different direction sonically.

What the hell did I just listen to? This guy is just an embarrassment to country music.

Honestly, this is very out there. But I really like it. The overlying theme is a typical country theme, even if the lyrical execution is different. Everyone bitches about Sam Hunt's sound, but it doesn't bother me. And I think that his lyrics are really his strength. I totally agree with you!!

Sigh...I don't care to start a "what is country" argument, but I just have to ask: why are lyrics the qualifying factor for being a country song? What lyrics qualify something as a rock song? A jazz song? A waltz? Come on. There are many qualities that make each genre unique. I refuse to accept the notion that just because his lyrics tell "stories" we should bend over and accept his lazy marketing attempt as country music.

This is not Sam's lead single. Hence why I started the thread in the non-singles forum last night :)
Moving it back there now.

I loved everything on Sam's debut, but this song is just incredibly boring. Glad to hear it isn't looking to be his lead single because it would certainly flop. It's not catchy like "Take Your Time" or "Break Up in a Small Town" were to balance out the talk/rap verses. I'm very excited for new music from Sam, but this isn't what I want from him...

Wish this was for sale, both versions. Not sure why it isn't... nor are they on MPE as of this writing.

I liked most of his debut album, except for BUIAST, but my God, this is out there. Everything about this song is so strange and cringy to the point where I'm honestly surprised that the reception in the thread so far has been mixed rather than overwhelmingly negative. I don't get this one, and I actually like his style of music (for the most part)... but he can keep this one, lol. And it'd definitely badly hurt the incredible momentum that he has going into his sophomore album if this were released... which I doubt happens, but this would perform more like "Vacation" than any of his past hits if it went to radio, I'm certain of it.

Bobby Bones twitter account confirmed Sam & Hannah are engaged today.:) Also, Sam didn't put it up for $$ anywhere b/c it's what he said. Redemption. :)

It's my hope that, in 2017, we can get posts like this moved to the "Country News & NON-SINGLES Discussion" board.

I don't really understand why there is a non-singles section for the country forum when there is one right here.

Because some of us only look at the country board.

I hope this isn't even on the next album, I don't want to ever have to hear it again.

@kennyjayradio: The new song @samhuntmusic posted over the weekend will not be the new single. We'll have a new song for you in the next couple of weeks!

Well, that was a wonderful waste of four minutes. Seriously, if jhomes87 did not have the lyrics present, I would have gotten lost in the song. Very painful to listen.

It's my hope that, in 2017, we can get posts like this moved to the "Country News & NON-SINGLES Discussion" board. The country sub-forum is more to discuss broader topics related to the country genre...personally, I think it would get incredibly cluttered if we had threads for album tracks in there, plus all of the different kinds of threads that are already there. In any case, the staff (and not just me) feels that it's better to have discussion of album tracks in this forum. I don't really understand why there is a non-singles section for the country forum when there is one right here. See above. And also, to add on to my above comment, the phrase "non-singles" in the name of the country sub-forum was put in place not to mean album tracks, but to mean, well, any discussion not related to one radio single in particular. In other words, it's for any discussion not related to country radio singles. Discussion of country albums is still done in the A-J and K-Z artist discussion forums (although we do have listening party threads in the country sub-forum as well), and discussion of album tracks should still take place in this forum.

Yeah, that was my guess. I was thinking the non-singles was just a confusing phrasing.

Love this man and Break Up In A Small Town and Take Your Time are wonderful. Haven't heard this yet but I'm jealous of this Hannah chick, LOL. She's quite the lucky woman.

The more XM The Highway plays "Drinkin' Too Much" the more it feels like this has a outside tiny shot at being the lead single from a Sam Hunt sophomore album. I hope that is not the case. I mean the beat and music behind the talking on "DTM" is actually pretty good in my opinion. That said its not really even a song is it? "DTM" is just spoken word. "DTM" could be up in the spoken word catagory at the Grammys. Now on to the genre. "DTM" might be the least country song The Highway has ever played and that is saying something for them. The words (I dont call them lyrics because lyrics are sung from what I am told) and the music are so far from country. As bad as "Country Radio" is these days at playing country music I couldn't see them spinning "DTM". Thats just my opinion, I really hope "DTM" is just getting Hunt back in our minds after a little bit of a lay off, and there is a real lead single to come soon.
