This was released as a single from 1966's Greatest Hits. Classic. Here's the song review from AllMusic:
Having co-written the Temptations' number one R&B/Top 15 pop hit "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," songwriter/producer Norman Whitfield and Eddie Holland of the famed Motown songwriting/production trio Holland-Dozier-Holland were reunited for "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," the group's fourth number one R&B single. The duo obviously had chemistry and complimented each other's strengths. Holland was a hands-on perfectionist working with the artist's vocal phrasing, while Whitfield was more into finding a good hook first then writing a song around it. Recorded during the summer of 1966, "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep"'s rhythmic center is helmed by bassist James Jamerson and drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen. Paul Riser, who wrote the splendid arrangements for their first number one R&B smash, "My Girl," does his usual top-flight job on this enduring classic. Becoming the group's fourth consecutive R&B chart-topper, "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" parked at number one R&B for five weeks and peaked at number three pop in late summer 1966.
