The first single from the highly influential duo of Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet, it hit #2 in the UK in 1982 and #67 in the US when it was released there later that year. It was later included on their first album, Upstairs at Eric's. It has been covered several times since its release, starting with an a capella version the following year which became the X-mas #1 in the UK. It was actually offered to Depeche Mode first, which Clarke had left very recently, but they declined.
This is one of the major classics of the early 80s imo, and one of the most enduring Synthpop tracks. Similar to Tainted Love, most would likely be surprised to find out that it wasn't a major hit in the US when it was originally released.

One of my favorite songs from the 80s. I used to think it was an early Erasure song until recently, lol.

Great song. Of course, I always think of it as the closing scene from the movie Can't Hardly Wait.
