I grew up as a teenager in the 80s so I was a big Janet fan since the first single of Control. Lover her, her music and her video. And enjoyed following each and every single on the charts until the late 90s. Loved her full albums Control, Rhythm, Janet and Velvet. The four of them fantastic. Iconic. Once I got to All For You (even before the scandal) her album magic ended for me. I still liked the singles and some album tracks here and there but the album as a whole lost its appeal. It got worse with Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. And I guess also Discipline. I cannot recall much from it. Today I decided to revisit all those albums after YEARS since the last time and do a playlist of my favorite songs. All I can say so far that it's shaping up to be a SHORT playlist. Now I hear tons of sexy/sexual ballads that all sound the same to me and just draaaag. It will be for sure a playlist I will LOVE of mostly upbeat songs, but it'll proof my point that those 4 albums never appealed that much to me as a whole. It was a surprise to me in 2017 when I finally got into 2015's Unbreakable and ended up enjoying it all very much. But now in 2021 I cannot mention a single song from it... :( I will revisit it too in case something can be added to my playlist. I will be interested to hear the opinion of young fans, like the ones who became fans with All For You. Did you explore the older albums that you didn't "live"? What did you think? Or do you prefer better the ones that came after? So Janet was on top of the world when I became aware and really started following popular music and the charts in Spring 2001. "All For You" was still all over radio and the transition to "Someone To Call My Lover" was beginning and it was my anchor song throughout the summer (along with Mandy Moore's In My Pocket, lol). I got the AFY album from the library and was obsessed, though I did get bored and often skipped the 4-song "baby-making ballad" suite, but love the rest of the album (though I didn't appreciate the TEA of "Truth" until I was older). One of my aunts had Design of a Decade and let me borrow it so it really opened me up to Janet's earlier work (though TTWLG was my least favorite along with Let's Wait Awhile because I was mostly into upbeat music as a tween). But I begged and begged and between Christmas 2001 and my birthday in 2002, I got Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet. and was HOOKED. The version of All For You I ended up getting also had a Bonus DVD of her Virgin Records videos which pulled me in even more. And eventually I requested The Velvet Rope from the library before getting a copy of my own because there was so much chatter online about it being people's favorite Janet album. Long story short, I loved all of her albums Control through All For You and still do. I have come to appreciate Damita Jo, 20 YO, and Discipline, but I agree that they don't quite live up to the hype for me. Damita Jo IMHO is the strongest, but I didn't appreciate it at the time because all the mid-tempo R&B numbers blended together and the album felt bloated. I appreciate it more now because I have a more refined ear for R&B and Soul than I used to, but there's still this sheen across the production of the entire Damita Jo album that sucks the soul out of the music, maybe for pop crossover potential at the time (??) except for JALW because those guitars go HARD. as well as I Want You's throwback sound. 20 YO is my least favorite album of hers since her 1982 self-titled. I prefer the tracks without Jermaine Dupri's involvement (Daybreak, Enjoy, Take Care, Love 2 Love, Days Go By, Roll Witchu) because they sound like actual Janet songs to me. Her vocals sound buried in the mix and also like she has a sinus infection on the JD tracks and the production sounds like a poor imitation of Control mixed with 2006 sounds. The only track I use is "This Body" though I will jam to "So Excited" from time to time. Discipline took some steps back toward being a true Janet album even without the involvement of Jimmy and Terry, but it should have been trimmed down. The Stargate-produced "2 Nite" has held up shockingly bad with time even though I liked it back in '08. The Tricky Stewart "Greatest X" should not have been kept, all the JD tracks except "Rock With U" and "So Much Betta" should've been cut and his uptempos replaced with the Japanese-bonus track "Let Me Know" which was produced by Chuck Harmony & Ne-Yo. Unbreakable *FINALLY* felt like a true Janet album again, though I would still consider trimming 2-3 songs. I generally don't skip tracks though and find myself revisiting several songs on their own, especially "Take Me Away" and "Dammn Baby" All for you actually sold 3 million in the U.S. and should be re-certified. Control through All for you should all be re-certified for at least a million each. And DOAD should be at 4 million. She sold a ton thru Columbia House in the 90s. Those old school “record clubs”. IDK if those were ever counted? RIAA counts them for their certifications (if the artist/label pay up to get recertified). I wish they would switch to automatic certs like in the UK.

I agree how most feel about Janet's string of albums between "Control and The Velvet Rope". "All For You" was good in my opinion or had some great highs. I only went back to a few songs on "Damita Jo". The cd wasn't awful but something was missing. However I just went back and sampled it and realized I slept on "Like You Don't Love Me". It's cute. This is where my opinion seems to be different than some here. I really liked most of "20 Year Old". I thought "So Excited" was hot but perhaps not the best single at the time? "Get It Out Out Me" was really catchy I was into that and "Show Me". All of the upbeat songs were good in my opinion. "Daybreak" kind of reminded me of "Someone To Call My Lover". There were only a song or two I didn't care for. One being the lead single. I didn't hate it but what a disappointment. I was also into "Discipline". "Feedback" should have SMASHED. "LUV, 2NITE and "So Much Betta" were also favorites. I loved most of the slow songs too. I thought "Never Gonna Let You Go" was going to be the next "Again" if heard. lol I remember listening to this from start to finish and barely skipping anything. Though fan favorite "Rock With U" was not a favorite. "Unbreakable" was good for awhile. I loved "BurnItUp but I was never into it like other fans and prefer Discipline and 20 Year Old. I may go back and give it a listen because I do remember liking it but didn't have many favorites on there like most of her other cd's.

All For You as an album doesn't do much for me, but it's the individual tracks that I love. The album tracks like Trust A Try, China Love (MY FAVORITE TRACK), Feels So Right are highlights. Damita Jo is an album, it's a mood. I like listening to it from start to finish. I only dislike some of the interludes. Album tracks like SloLove, Moist (MY #1), Truly and Spending Time With You are ones I never get tired of. And the B-sides are better than the singles! Could This Be Love and Put Your Hands On should have been on the album. 20 Y.O. is average, but has good repeat value. I like Call On Me, So Excited, With U, Take Care and Enjoy. Roll Witchu deserved to be on the album and I will always be bitter about it's exclusion. Discipline could have been an EP or a 9 track album. With better vocal arrangements and more input from Janet, would have been a strong body of work. So Much Betta, Can't B Good and Feedback are my favorites.

I remember the leak of Damita Jo had Could This Be Love. I think it was removed at the last minute. That one and Put Your Hands On should have made the cut. Was Could This Be Love ever officially released? I know I'm Here and Put Your Hands On are in the Japanesse version.
Among the 4 post-imperial albums (AFY, DJ, 20YO and D), Damita Jo is my favorite.

Or do you prefer better the ones that came after? I've been a fan of her since I was a toddler. I agree that Control to The Velvet Rope are her best ones. I thought All For You was a great, fun pop album. Great memories of my youth. Love most of the tracks on it, except Would You Mind. Damita Jo is the only album from her discography that I truly dislike and the one I revisted the least. I thought the album sounded very monotonous in nature. Some of the weaker tracks like Moist, Warmth, thinking bout my ex, like you don't love me, and my baby I could do without. They should have been replaced with the bonus tracks, and it would have been a much stronger album as a whole. Even though, 20 Y.O. and Discipline are not very liked among fans, I actually found them more enjoyable to listen to than most of the stuff on DJ. Unbreakable was a really good album. I liked that the album showed more maturity and growth as an artist in comparison to her last three albums.

Was Could This Be Love ever officially released? It is still unreleased and a fan favorite. DJ Aktive has played it a few times, but Janet has not acknowledged this bop so far. HOWEVER...since 2017, Janet is continuously performing album tracks that she's never done before, so I do have hope for the bonus tracks/unreleased tracks somewhat.

Idk if it is just me, but I feel like Janet is SEVERELY underrated these days. Like, she has had a truly massive career and I feel like out of all the divas of the 80s/90s she is one of the least talked about. Like, wtf. Is it just because of that stupid Superbowl "controversy"?If so can we just strip Justin of whatever relevancy he has left and give it to Janet plz.

I don't think Janet has done as much to cement her legacy. After the the Number Ones Tour, she disappeared for about five years. She's toured extensively in recent years, but other than that she has not been visible. Poetic Justice single could have been the perfect opportunity to reintroduce/introduce herself to a younger generation, but she didn't capitalize off it. I really think her marriage to Wissam hurt her legacy.

I hope Janet gets her redemption with this documentary. And that she talks extensively about the SB and the aftermath and lays it all out. I want her to go in.

Here is Janet's chart history on the 18 format charts by Billboard as monitored by Nielsen BDS. Monitoring began in 1990 Some notes: 1. Nielsen BDS (Broadcast Data Systems) began monitoring Top 40 and Rhythmic stations in November 1990 in what was then the Hot 100 Airplay chart (now Radio Songs) Other formats were added throughout the 90s until all formats were added and radio-only singles could chart on the Hot 100 in December 1998 This chart is what I'm referring to when I write "Top 40." The separate Rhythmic and Mainstream Top 40s charts did not launch until October 1992. 2. R&B/Hop Hop is Urban and Urban AC (Adult R&B) combined. The R&B/Hop Hop BDS chart debuted in April 1992 while separate Mainstream and Adult R&B charts launched in September 1993. However, the former chart had 75 positions and if a song got enough airplay to scrape the bottom of the chart without charting on Mainstream or Adult, it could appear here still (which happened with "70s Love Groove"). Also, "That's The Way Love Goes" debut on the two charts in 1993 after it peaked, which is why that song is listed for all three charts. 3. Adult Top 40 did not split off from Adult Contemporary until October 1995. 4. I did not research the Latin Airplay chart since it compiles Latin Pop, Regional Mexican, Latin Tropical, and Latin Rhythm into a single chart. {Billboard Radio Monitor} Song | Chart | Peak | Weeks Charted | Peak Week |

And here I thought she already had the album done by then and just decided to postpone release because of the pandemic. Wasn't the album originally planned for release in May 2020? (I remember that month for some reason).

As much as I live for new Janet music, at this point she deserves to stay home and watch Eissa grow up. I'm sure she'll be back when she feels it's safe to record and tour and maybe she can take notes from Mariah and Taylor about how to properly cement her legacy and release complete versions of things for the fans. Next year is #JJ40 for her music, so I would rather her spend 2-4 hours a day working to reclaim ownership of her past material to release a la #MC30 and spend the other 20 hours with Eissa and doing whatever the f**k she wants.

I didn't take anything about that to mean that the album wasn't close to finished with the album prior to COVID or that she's not interested in her career. All Kaytranada said was he was supposed to work with Janet in early 2020 and then she canceled due to COVID.. which makes perfect sense to me given the risks. Wasn't the tour scheduled to start around summer? So she could have been recording some final tracks around February/March. I've (along with others) said it at other times in this thread in the past year, but at this stage of her career, she's not going to release an album when she can't tour so that's the only reason I believe it's on hold.. not that her heart isn't into the music. She already wasn't trend chasing with the last album, so if it's the same case this time around, I really don't think delaying the material for ~18 months is going to make a big difference in how it's received.
