SWMEC is sonically like "Honey, I'm Home" on vacation in Jamaica. Lyrically, it is in my opinion the best chorus we have heard her write thus far. It's miles better than LATGG or even PM and I like both very much. But this, THIS is Shania in full form.

Swingin is ok. Yet to hear a song that is worth the wait though. Definitely buying tickets to the tour

These songs are really generic and limp.

What sucks is that if these songs and album would've come out a year or two after the Greatest Hits album, it would've been massive. She took WAY too long of a break. I just hope the first week sales aren't super low. It's obvious by the lack of effort that the label is putting into radio that they're solely depending on Shania's old fan base to carry the sales.

This was kind of a lose-lose, in a way. Coming back after 15 years screams "I have something to say", which is really unwanted pressure for an artist like Shania. She did what she had to (and could) do—come back singing like sunshine, writing catchy songs with no ego—but it seems light next to the hiatus. Expecting a total reinvention at this point in her career would have been foolish, but the fact that this album sounds like it could have come out in 2005 in terms of growth/artistry is hard to ignore (even though that, given all she went through, is its own victory for her and diehard fans).
What it will do is kill the hiatus and the weight that comes with it. If she really does want to start making music regularly and open up to new collaborators as reports suggest, then this becomes a good way for her to dip her toe back in the water and start fresh—and if that is the plan, I have a feeling what comes next will be more interesting and less shaped by expectations.

The music video for "Life's About To Get Good" debuted at #17 last week on the GAC (Great American Country) Top 20 countdown. This week it jumps 10 spots to #7.

I don't understand why she's still talking about her relationship with Mutt in these songs. I assume they've been sitting on the shelf that long because that topic is beyond yesterday's newspaper.

I think that's why no one cares. And she probably comes off like a bitter old hag. I do like Swingin' though. The chorus is infectious.

Exactly. I mean before LATGG, she only release 7 new songs (incl 2 features in 15 years). It really is old news - almost 10 years since Mutt asked her for divorce. It's a slippery slope - her image has been the tough beautiful woman who could dismiss men who didn't meet her needs and yet she was the one dropped. One of the reason the 3 ST/ML albums worked was that the songs were, by her admission, less personal, almost 3rd person like. ST said in an interview she writes a lot of personal stuff, but kept it to herself. Perhaps we know now why. Anyway I'm glad she's back and hope she keeps recording regularly - a Xmas album would be great.

I feel sorry that you feel that way, do you really have no empathy? Have you ever been in love? Or heartbroken? Or betrayed? She isn't bitter at all... in fact, the albums about how tough times makes you stronger! Poor me, of course, was that initial shock. Everyone needs a little time to grieve. Glad you like Swingin, wait for album... and please never call Shania a bitter old hag again. Goodness, I can't imagine how you would handle what she went through.

The woman lost her freaking voice so it's not like she could've necessarily recorded an album full of heartbreak tunes years ago even if she had wanted to. Plus, judging by the song titles, I don't get a "bitter old hag" vibe at all nor do I think the whole record will be a "poor me" affair. I'm just shocked so many people are shocked about her writing about Mutt as if women in general haven't been writing and singing "he done me wrong" songs since the beginning of time.
Furthermore, she's never been a vocal powerhouse nor has she displayed oceanic lyrical depth so I don't get all of the criticisms about her voice and lyrics now either. If I knew none of her story since Up! and someone played me this new Shania Twain music in 2017, I'd say she does sound different but it still sounds 100% like Shania Twain.

Actually when she went to London, she was asked by a journalist why this wasn't a divorce album. So, some people still want to hear what she has to say. Mutt wasn't just her husband, he was her musical collaborator. So I'm sure writing this brought back the "F***k Mutt" moments.
I personally don't want every song to be about Mutt and the divorce, and clearly that isn't the focus. "Swingin'" - a fighter in life (I could see the root of this being about her poverty stricken childhood). "Home Now" - finding herself 15 years after UP!. "Light Of My Life" - finding new love. "Poor Me" - a "F***k Mutt" moment. "We Got Somethin' They Don't" - a total party song...closest thing we have on the album to an IGGG or MIFLAW. These are just descriptions based on what people have said after attending the listening parties.
A mention of the divorce during a few songs is fine. But I'm 100% okay with this more personal side. A fan on CityLine in 2005 asked if she would ever release her "darker" material, because they wanted to hear it. She said "probably at some point I should."
Have you ever had a good cry? Like a really good cry? The type of cry that brings back every previous emotion? That's what this album sounds like it is going to be. All the emotions that she's gone through are laid out on this record. It doesn't mean she's feeling that way at the moment, but like Shania said "this album is about where I've been, and where I am now."
Like others have mentioned, the albums that follow, NOW will probably not be as dark, but she got through the pain of life by writing songs about it. Thus, we have NOW.

Wow, some of you fonts can be quite abrasive and can't take an opinion. I wasn't calling Shania an old hag in first person. I was simply saying that's probably what people are thinking with all these songs about her ex husband and that's probably why they haven't been so successful. I love a good heartbreak, I'm over it, new me song, so Shania gets no hate from me.

I purchased SWMEC and PM today. LOVE PM. I can't make up my mind about SWMEC. I just don't understand this song. I'm trying to figure out what she is swinging at? The fact that it's summer? It's another year? The radio? The weather? I was hoping this would be like a before he cheats and she was chasing Mutt with a baseball bat. Haha. The hook is quite good, but doesn't match the verses. So yeah I'm really confused.

The more I listen to it, the more I choose to believe "swinging" is dancing. She may have specifically likened the song to a boxer or whatever but I choose to believe it's like dancing along with the groove

I think, based off my interpretation and what she's said in interviews, is "Swinging with your eyes closed" is like hakuna matata. No worries, no plans, just throwing all cares to the wind and enjoying life. I purchased SWMEC and PM today. LOVE PM. I can't make up my mind about SWMEC. I just don't understand this song. For all confused about the SWMEC lyrics, here is what she detailed the song as when she was interviewed for the album press release. The handclaps and wailing guitar of opener “Swinging With My Eyes Closed” cooks up idyllic images of summer juxtaposed with the fighting spirit she so naturally flaunts—“I follow like a season not afraid of what I’m feeling.”
“Whether it’s joy or pain, the first thing we do when we experience a feeling is close our eyes,” she continues. “If you watch newborn babies, their eyes aren’t open yet, but they’re waving their fists in front of them. They’re swinging with their eyes closed. This is who we are intrinsically. I’ve often gone through things with my fists forward like, ‘I don’t know if what’s coming is going to be good or bad, but dammit, I’m ready for it’.”

ESPN is now airing three separate Shania commercials containing snippets of: "Life's About To Get Good," "We Got Something They Don't," and "Home Now."
