ERASURE Breathe Producer(s): Erasure Writer(s): V. Clarke, A. Bell Publisher(s): Musical Moments/Minotour Music/Sony Music U.K. Genre: DANCE/ELECTRONIC Label/Catalog Number: Mute 9259 (CD single) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: January 22, 2005
During the past 15 years, Erasure has evolved from innovative to campy to redundant to weary to refreshingly retro—remarkably, all without ever really changing its sound. The duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell return with its best album in years, "Nightbird" (due Jan. 25), which is more inspired and melodic than any effort in recent memory. First single "Breathe" perfectly personifies the pair's signature: carefree, synthesizer beats; a one-listen out-of-the-ballpark hook; and the warm, rich tones of singer Bell. Commercially available remixes thankfully maintain the integrity of the track while turning up the beats (along with a breathtaking acoustic mix)—but it's the radio version that is destined to be embraced by the thousands who remember when, fondly and indelibly. Utterly hypnotic.—CT

I have started to enjoy the LMC remix of this song. I haven't heard any of the other versions yet

Hot Shot Debut on next week's Club Play chart (at #37).
I've only heard snippets of the album version so far, and (like many mid-tempo Erasure songs) it's going to take a while to grow on me. I think it's going to take a decent remix for dance radio to embrace this one...

I heard the LMC Extended Mix. I think that one is pretty good. It could work on some stations in that mix.
There is no known Radio Edit of the LMC mix. The vocals come in after awhile, and for most radio stations, that might not work.

I love the original, but I agree that it's not suited for dance radio. Haven't heard any of the remixes yet.

Classic Erasure and very good. Already debuted at No. 4 in the UK giving them their biggest hit since "Always" peaked at No. 4 in 1994.
The LMC mix is exceptional an as a result gives them one of their fastest breaking US club hits to date.

"Breathe" debuts at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Single Sales and No. 1 on Hot Dance Single Sales...or at least would have if not for an error by Billboard...here's what Billboard had to say:
FOR THE RECORD: Because of an errant UPC code, Erasure's "Breathe" was initially tracked as an album and inadvertently excluded from debuting in this issue on the Hot Dance Singles Sales or Hot 100 Singles Sales charts.
The title, available as a maxi-CD, scanned 1,000 units, enough to place it at No. 1 on the Dance Sales chart and at No. 2 on Hot 100 Singles Sales. It will be tracked as a single on next week's charts.

I wonder where that will place it on the overall Hot 100. Even better, maybe a Hot AC programmer or two will notice how well the single is doing.

The track is number 15 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Chart. Pretty good for its 4th week on the chart.
