#50. Hotline Bling, Drake Points: 1054 | average rank: 45.886 | median rank: 48 | st. dev.: 17.76 Blocked by: The Hills, The Weeknd (3 weeks)
This is the third of only four required songs to have no top 10 rankings from anyone. I'm normally not one to say things like this, but never has anyone deserved the dreaded #2 peak more than this fool here. He COULD have been #1…had he released the video on time…and if he hadn't first made it an Apple Music exclusive (idk about now but Apple didn't release video streaming numbers back then)…and if he hadn't written that super corny 'thank you even if I don't actually get #1' letter to his fans only to be bumped down to #3 by not one but two blockbuster debuts. Just thinking about it again makes me alternately mad and delirious with laughter. He wanted that #1 sooooooooo badly y'all.

#48. Nobody's Supposed to Be Here, Deborah Cox Points: 1068 | average rank: 45.486 | median rank: 49 | st. dev.: 16.742 Blocked by: I'm Your Angel, R. Kelly and Celine Dion (6 weeks); Have You Ever, Brandy (2 weeks)
In a bit of irony, Deborah got her revenge for not being able to crown the Hot 100 by blocking four Hot 100 #1s from reaching the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart over the course of 14 weeks (Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill, Lately by Divine, Have You Ever by Brandy, and Angel of Mine by Monica). She also topped Dance Club Songs with the Hector Hex mix (I think this mix might have gotten more play on pop than the original ballad did - I remember hearing it all the time on the radio). This song was a lot huger than its #2 peak indicates; it was absolutely inescapable. I was thinking this would do a bit better than a low 40s rank, but in retrospect I now wonder if everyone listened to and voted on the same version. Ah, well.

I like both versions of "Nobody", and like you, I remember hearing the remix ALL THE TIME back then. Couldn't escape it.
Wait, "I'm Your Angel" was #1 for THAT long? I had forgotten about that. Man.

NOOO not HB! > The Drake hate is real in these streets, man. I'm surprised it even did this well, tbh. (also I'm still ticked at myself for missing the Drake rankdown. I just never have time to do all the ones I want, sigh.) I like both versions of "Nobody", and like you, I remember hearing the remix ALL THE TIME back then. Couldn't escape it. Wait, "I'm Your Angel" was #1 for THAT long? I had forgotten about that. Man. Yeah, I had forgotten too! But it does make sense for that time, for the same reason OSD was huge - two juggernauts in their respective genres combining to create one monster single. R. Kelly was really good about throwing out a 'soft' crowd pleaser to get the heat off his back when it seemed he was finally starting to get some much deserved criticism over his personal life. Back then the public didn't know much beyond some Aaliyah rumors, but even so, he's always been horrifically sociopathic like that.

I had forgotten how huge BAO was until seeing long it got blocked. This was very much a Thinking Out Loud situation - it just happened to get screwed over by charting at the same time as one other, even more improbably gigantic hit that just would not budge. I probably conveniently forgot b/c this song got on my damn nerves so quickly lmao. To this day I still love the entire album, but I could go a few lifetimes without ever hearing the title track.

As the clue for #44 went, ignorance is bliss, but for one person this next reveal won't be blissful at all - we're about to lose our first #1...

Y'all sucked at this rankdown so bad. I hate y'all. I expected both of these in the top half.

Man, "Back at One" should have been higher. Could be nostalgia talking, but I loved that song so much when I was younger, and I still enjoy listening to it every now and again.
Though...yeah, this was also everywhere back in the day. I heard that song, "Smooth", and "I Knew I Loved You" about 100 million times back in the fall and winter of 1999.

…and y'all continue to collectively crap on all of @walker9's hopes and dreams as he loses his third top 10 song in a row. Thankfully the top of his rankdown (barring the few free picks that didn't make it at all) will catch a small break after this.

I'm actually a little miffed about this one. I thought Missing was going to do a lot better, but I guess that was just my nostalgia clouding my judgment.

It's now Baby Spice's turn to remind everyone how much they suck, as he becomes the second person to lose his #1 before we make it to the top half of the rankdown. (We won't see the next #1 loss until tomorrow, with #30.)

Oh, I am not sure if I noted this earlier, but where songs have the same number of points, I broke the tie by whichever song had the better median rank. So far two such ties have happened - between Die Young and I Don't Wanna Live Forever, and just now with Red Light Special and Missing. This will happen one more time on the rankdown with songs #34 and #33.

This was another one that surprised me - I threw it into the required pile because the list was light on rock artists, but most of you didn't seem to care one way or the other about this one.

#38. Right Here (Human Nature Remix) - SWV Points: 1177 | average rank: 42.371 | median rank: 47 | st. dev.: 17.748 Blocked by: Dreamlover, Mariah Carey (3 weeks)
An r&b classic from the '90s, it's no wonder that it becomes the final song to miss the top half of our rankdown - neither that genre nor that decade fared as well overall as other genres/more recent songs in this rankdown.

Ok so I kiiiiiiiiiinda lied when I said gravey's top 10 was getting a bit of a reprieve but this is the last song from his top 10 to be revealed tonight, I promise! This song is such a JAM btw! It's so light and summery and peak '90s, pretty much everything I love is neatly packaged into this 4 1/2 minute sing-along.

This was very much a Thinking Out Loud situation - it just happened to get screwed over by charting at the same time as one other, even more improbably gigantic hit that just would not budge. Well speak of the devil... #36. Thinking Out Loud, Ed Sheeran Points: 1190 | average rank: 42 | median rank: 47 | st. dev.: 19.065 Blocked by: Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars (8 weeks)
I didn't realize when making that Back At One/Thinking Out Loud comparison just a few posts ago that the two even got blocked for the same number of weeks :o They really were a lot alike! Sappy ballads that couldn't best the more energetic, horn-driven numbers.
