#35. Case of the Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do), Mya Points: 1196 | average rank: 41.829 | median rank: 47 | st. dev.: 17.759 Blocked by: Independent Women Part I, Destiny's Child (3 weeks)
MTV would have had you thinking this was a multi-week #1 the way they spun this video. So many girls I knew tried to copy that choreography, to varying degrees of failure lol. This smash is more or less responsible for Mya being invited to be on Lady Marmalade less than a year later and no one batting an eye about her being seen as fit to co-exist with the likes of P!nk and Christina.

#34. Party In the USA, Miley Cyrus Points: 1199 | average rank: 41.743 | median rank: 52 | st. dev.: 21.845 Blocked by: I Gotta Feeling, Black Eyed Peas (2 weeks)
Second highest standard deviation of the rankdown here - not sure why it surprises me so much that Miley's so polarizing. This song may have gotten stuck at #2 but I still consider it her biggest, most definitive hit, even over Wrecking Ball.

What bothers me so much about PITUSA is that for weeks it was so close to being #1 but for whatever reason people just wouldn't F * * K O F F of will.u.stop's dick, and so 'I Gotta Vomit' held it off. #SaltyAF :sip2:

#32. Regulate, Warren G ft. Nate Dogg Points: 1219 | average rank: 41.171 | median rank: 49 | st. dev.: 19.133 Blocked by: I Swear, All-4-One (3 weeks)
This is another song that I feel deserved better but tbh I didn't come in with high expectations for how well it would do with other people, so I'll be grateful that it made it into the top half at all.

It's now Baby Spice 's turn to remind everyone how much they suck, as he becomes the second person to lose his #1 before we make it to the top half of the rankdown. (We won't see the next #1 loss until tomorrow, with #30.) Well, my #1 was an extra that didn't chart! >

Even so, the extent of BEP's domination in 2009 is one of the most head-scratching things to me. How in the world did people not get fatigued of them for 26 weeks??? I'm still moderately convinced that Boom Boom Pow might have snatched OSD's record had it not been for BEP cutting off their own smash with another one, that's how much people were on their nuts.

Final reveal of the night is this cute little song from a band that I did not know until a few days ago is considered alternative Christian. Not that this song is super sinful or anything but uh, what church are they singing stuff like this at?

I really thought my #1 which was my extra would chart but maybe not. Just wondering Two extras left; my goal for tomorrow is 30-16 and both will be revealed in that stretch. I really like the concept of the 'extras' in this rankdown but these two songs are strong proof that I've got to figure out how to properly weight it before I try this setup again. Both of them objectively should have been in the top 10.

okay, i think came up with another decent set of hints 30 - the first one gone tomorrow will take another #1 rank with it 29 - I placed this song at #1 in another rankdown, but I'm okay with where it landed here, so I wouldn't call this a hard fall. 28 - one of six artists who will appear on this rankdown more than once 27 - #31 and #39 are a good hint at this artist 26 - this should be easy enough25 - the first song to find its way to the top third of the rankdown, you'd think they'd put on a :) about it but they're more likely to seem rather grumpy that they didn't do better than this lol 24 - I can't think of a hint that doesn't immediately give this away so I'll skip it, but I think many will be content with this 23 - I can think of a hint that doesn't immediately give this away, but i'm too sore to be bothered rn 22 - but speaking of 23, what was it with the '90s and the mild obsession with this grammatically incorrect verb? 21 - If I'm not mistaken, this is the first of only two times on this rankdown where an act got in its own way 20 - Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me? 19 - in retrospect, this is such a predictably Virgo thing to say to someone 18 - this is actually a thing that is happening on pulse as we speak 17 - Why does this song have the highest standard deviation in the rankdown? The answer is in the lyrics. 16 - Darling Nikki, Empty Spaces, and Stairway to Heaven (supposedly) should help you figure this one out

Wait a minute Cynthia didn't participate in her own rankdown? I'm confused. Choosing the required songs was her participation. If only! I don't know what it is about this particular rankdown but my schedule was all kinds of off from the start. I prefer to do my own rankdowns as soon as I open them so that I'm not unduly influenced or find myself trying to 'rig' things as results pour in lol, but I never got around to doing this one in a timely manner. I decided not to bother with it. Too many songs on the margin or free picks that I could have unfairly boosted, knowing what the margins were. I did get to pick which songs were required so personal discretion pushed some stuff in that otherwise might not have gotten ranked at all (the older r&b songs, mainly) but I also did a lot of things in an attempt to make the list balanced. So a lot more songs I would have personally preferred to see ranked actually didn't make the cut, while songs that I don't care for got in almost by default because of the two-a-year rule. This rankdown was a guinea pig of sorts but I'm not entirely displeased with the results. tl;dr I need to simplify the rules, pick a different rank system to level the playing field for optional songs (points don't work, averages and medians do) and ditch the bonus points (which were convoluted and a pain in the ass to track for how little they helped). But outside of an '80s edition of #2 hits and a #3 hits rankdown that I'd like to do eventually, this probably won't be a format I use for any future rankdowns. Also, for a lot of recent artist rankdowns people have been doing the 'submit your favorite album tracks and the ones with the most mentions will be revealed throughout' thing and the free picks probably would have been less controversial if I'd given them that kind of treatment instead of a failed attempt at ranking them alongside 'required' songs.

Happy that my whole bottom 10 was eliminated tonight. Most of them are older songs I just thought were really boring on the first listens. Nice to see that Die Young made the list, it's one of Kesha's best imo. Wow I can't believe I missed Crazy, I should've ranked it. Hotline Bling deserved much better, I didn't think it would be out this early. Same for Cold Water, which is my first (required) Top 10 out :/

Biggest surprises so far: - Case of the Ex: not a bad song but just not up to par with most songs in the RD... likely second worse deviation from my personal rank - Missing: wtf?!!! May be an issue of different versions? Although for me both are such gems! I already liked it in its original version, which was already climbing up my chart when then I listened to the remix and it just solidified as a masterpiece of the 1990s. Sad at Crazy being this low, but I can see it having some polarizing opinions Regarding Last Kiss... I initially thought I was gonna rank it higher. It reached the top of my personal chart and was a big hit back home... it worked at its time but after all these years it just doesn't compare with the original version (and in the case of Peruvians with the Spanish version of about 4 decades ago).

"Not Gon' Cry" deserved so much more :( I was convinced that "Forever" would rank higher. I shoulda known better, this place is filled with Rihanna stans Y'all don't deserve the raunchy anthems that are "Red Light Special" and "Freak Like Me". Stick to y'all fav Pop gerls.

In a bit of irony, Deborah got her revenge for not being able to crown the Hot 100 by blocking four Hot 100 #1s from reaching the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart over the course of 14 weeks (Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill, Lately by Divine, Have You Ever by Brandy, and Angel of Mine by Monica). She also topped Dance Club Songs with the Hector Hex mix (I think this mix might have gotten more play on pop than the original ballad did - I remember hearing it all the time on the radio). This song was a lot huger than its #2 peak indicates; it was absolutely inescapable. I was thinking this would do a bit better than a low 40s rank, but in retrospect I now wonder if everyone listened to and voted on the same version. Ah, well. Despite being CanCon, my local station maybe played this a few times but not a lot so it didn't feel as big to me as its #2 peak suggests. I think when they did play it, it was the slow to fast version where the dance remix kicks in after the bridge before the last chorus. So the only place I heard the song outside of having the album was when MuchMoreMusic (canadian VH1) used to play it a lot, and it was on American Top 40 briefly. So to find out years later that it spent so much time at #2 on the Hot 100 was hugely unexpected.

Finally "Party In the USA" got out. It was easily my least favorite song on the list and the only one I truly hated. I can't believe it beat the likes of "I Don't Wanna Know" and "Forever"...
