Drunk In Love, Beyonce ft. Jay-Z Points: 486 | average rank: 22 | median rank: 19 | st. dev.: 10.583 Blocked by: Dark Horse, Katy Perry ft. Juicy J (1 week)
The clue: nsisco0818 aka surfy , who of course got his current screen name from a DIL lyric. Shout out to fearlessarrow and aerodynamite for the correct guesses! In retrospect I wish I would have thought to reference What's Love Got To Do With It for the clue instead...Jay making the reference to the 'eat the cake' scene in the movie was so problematic though, smh.

How come I didn't vote for any of these songs at all ??? There was the required 50 songs list that you had to rank, and then there was the 'optional' list from which you could pick up to 25 songs of your choice (but with a whole set of conditions). The next several reveals are going to be free pick stuff so not everyone will have voted for these songs. The required songs are (mostly) going to chart higher. A handful of people sent in lists with no or very few free picks; I assumed that was due to wanting to do the rankdown but not having the time to do the extra stuff, which is understandable.

I'm guessing not too many people are around rn so I'm going to resume this in the morning, but I'll be powering through at least 20 songs to make up for the small # of reveals today.

Queen B deserves better. Love this song but the "eat the cake" line is indeed the worst moment in Bey's discography by far.

You Were Meant For Me, Jewel Points: 491 | average rank: 22.444 | median rank: 23 | st. dev.: 8.617 Blocked by: Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, Puff Daddy ft. Ma$e (1 week); Hypnotize, Notorious B.I.G. (1 week)
The clue: All hail aerodynamite, the clue slayer! Jewel infamously caught a bunch of flack in 2003 when she put her folky image aside to make the super glossy, super pop Intuition. The video was supposed to be a parody of commercials that used highly sexualized stars to sell their products, but the overtly trend-chasing sound of the song combined with her licensing it out for use in a Schick Intuition razor ad sent way too many mixed signals for most people to pick up on (or believe the sincerity of) the satire. Oh, well this isn't about that song, which peaked at a tepid #20 and pretty much ended Jewel's charting career as we know it. This is about her highest peaking single, the probably hairier but definitely less confusing You Were Meant For Me. In fact, Jewel was so meant for the #2 spot that she even finished the '96 year-end chart at #2*, behind Elton John's Candle In the Wind 1997. *Billboard has this #2 finish down as "Foolish Games/You Were Meant For Me" because of Foolish Games being a hidden bonus track on the YWMFM physical single. YWMFM was dying by the time FG was sent to radio, but the technicality of being physically available for physical purchase bumped FG up to A-side status and the benefit of a recorded #2 peak despite no one checking for FG during the height of YWMFM. (The now dual A-side 'peaked' at #7 during FG's run.)

1, 2 Step, Ciara ft. Missy Elliott Points: 498 | average rank: 26.2 | median rank: 28 | st. dev.: 8.146 Blocked by: Let Me Love You, Mario (7 weeks)
The clue: gif from Paula Abdul's video for Opposites Attract ("I take two steps forward, you take two steps back...") but I was also hoping it would be easy to guess even without recognizing the vid because Paula is literally taking a step forward. Smack That was a good guess though! Alas, tiny spoiler alert the first, Smack That will not be joining us for this rendezvous. Only two people picked that one and one of them didn't even rank it very high. Ciara's Goodies era definitely lived up to its name - she got a #1 single from the lead and two #2 peaks from the follow-up singles. But alas, tiny spoiler alert the second, Ciara's other #2 hit Oh will also not be joining us on this rendezvous; again, only two people picked that one and one of them didn't even rank it very high.

Dead and Gone, T.I. ft. Justin Timberlake Points: 502 | average rank: 22.333 | median rank: 25 | st. dev.: 11.126 Blocked by: Right Round, Flo Rida ft. Ke$ha even though Flo and/or Luke's bitch asses had her name off solely because she didn't want to be a video thot (5 weeks)
The clue: a somewhat sarcastic play on the lyrics. "New Year, new me" -> "the old me is dead and gone." But just like all those people who claim they're turning a new leaf with the turn of the calendar, T.I. is still the same fuqboi he was when he recorded this song. Well, that last sentence wasn't part of the clue, that's just my personal opinion. I never cared much for this song. Justin's chorus is really nice but TI's part always felt flat to me, and this was before I really disliked T.I as a personality.

"1, 2 Step" almost made my extras, and I like it more than almost half of the main list. Great song! Oh well.

Uh... I have "Dead and Gone" +10 points, not just +1. Oh, bloop! Typo. I believe I have it correct in my spreadsheet (meaning the points are correct, I just typed it wrong here) but lemme double check before I move on to the next few hints.Ok, it turns out I did have the same typo in my spreadsheet as well and it was just enough that Dead and Gone inched ahead of 1, 2 Step. (So sorry franklin! This guts me as much as it hurts you, trust me) I've edited the above posts accordingly. Hopefully no other such blunders, but obviously you guys let me know if you notice any other mistakes!

I thought of Jewel when I saw the hint last night but thought I was wrong --how could it be in the 70s?! Oh well, at least it made the RD! Good to see Ciara too

I don't think there's any reason to get head-up over these early appearances. They'd have done a lot better if they were the compulsory choices because everyone would be ranking them.

Nevertheless, this format is somewhat unfair since the host arbitrarily chose 50 songs to have a *TREMENDOUS* leg up. Sure, there are too many songs to rank them all, but I would've much rather split them up by decade or something like that.
If we're going to do it this way for similar rankdowns, though, I'd much prefer the "pick 50" system, like in the Canadian Artists Rankdown, as opposed to required and free picks.

Yeah I agree with this. I feel like certain hated songs will be higher than well-received songs simply because of the fact that they were required for the rankings. Oh well, it is what it is, I guess.

I personally like this format. Yes some songs are going to be higher than others because they were required but it is a different way of doing it and I like that so I hope that this continues in future rankdowns

I don't think there's any reason to get head-up over these early appearances. They'd have done a lot better if they were the compulsory choices because everyone would be ranking them. Yeah, the formula didn't quite work out the way I was hoping it would but still, the important thing to keep in mind is that for the optional songs, just showing up at all is a big deal because roughly 75% of those songs aren't going to make it. That's excluding the 16 honorable mentions but even then over half the free pick list is going to be paid dust. A pure 'pick [number]' is certainly more straightforward, but where's the fun in that? No one ever gets mad at arbitrariness when you blame it on a randomizer. I don't intend this to come off as a complaint about a complaint, I just feel like I got a bit of pushback on what was being included or left out - or just the mere fact that anything was left out at all - when this rankdown was open that wouldn't have been there if I'd said 'I put these songs in a shuffler and took the first 50 songs that came up, so here's what we're ranking.' But something about knowing the host personally made the judgment call just doesn't feel the same to people for reasons I don't really know. I actually cut off several songs that I personally love but knew probably wouldn't fare well (e.g., Candy Rain) for the sake of including other songs that I don't care about but felt I'd get a major side eye for ignoring (e.g., Boulevard of Broken Dreams). When I eventually do the #3 hits rankdown I'm letting the randomizer do the work for me so I don't have to deal with it. Not sure if I'll go to the pick-X setup like the Canadian rankdown or keep the required/optional hybrid that I have here, but I know if I keep the hybrid I need to play around with a few different formulas to figure out what is closest to fair and that will prevent the compulsory picks from having such an insurmountable advantage. (I actually had another formula that I used at first but the results were so absurd that I immediately knew it was not going to work...although the more I think about it the more I have a feeling people would have preferred that absurdity, lol. And FWIW a) this rankdown was a bit of a guinea pig for me - I have a penchant for disobeying the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule; and b) I really feel like this type of theme is much better suited to a madness tournament setup, but IDK how many people would have been into that. (or how maine would have felt about me creeping in on his Madness territory, lol)
