Eight Straight: Drake Has Charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for a Record Eight Years Non-Stop
Two days after his record-setting night at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards (May 21), in which he won 13 trophies, the most for any artist in a single year, Drake takes ownership of another Billboard milestone, becoming the first artist to remain on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for eight uninterrupted years, a streak that dates back to his chart debut on May 23, 2009.
That week, the then-budding superstar's record run on the Hot 100 started with the arrival of his first single, "Best I Ever Had," which started not quite from the bottom (No. 92, actually), on its way to a No. 2 peak. (The song held the runner-up spot for five weeks, blocked by another history-making feat: The Black Eyed Peas were amid an unprecedented 26 consecutive-week hold at No. 1 with "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling.")
Since the bow of "Best," Drake has maintained a perfect Hot 100 attendance record, appearing in at least one lead or featured role on each weekly chart for a 420-week stretch (and counting!) On the latest Hot 100 (dated June 6, 2017), he claims three entries: as a lead on "Passionfruit" (No. 21), and "Portland," featuring Quavo and Travis Scott (No. 58) -- both from his album More Life -- and as a featured artist on Gucci Mane's "Both" (No. 44).
Drake's frequent collaboators Lil Wayne and Rihanna rank second and third all-time, respectively, for the longest streaks of consecutive weeks on the Hot 100 -- with Lil Wayne pulling 326 in a row, and Rihanna linking 216 straight.
Within his endeavor in endurance, Drake has notched three Hot 100 No. 1s. His first two were via featured roles on Rihanna hits: "What's My Name?" led for a week in 2010 and "Work" reigned for nine weeks in 2016. Subsequently in 2016, he scored his first Hot 100 topper as a leading act with "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, a 10-week No. 1 (and Billboard's official 2016 Song of the Summer).
Drake has earned 20 top 10 hits on the Hot 100, becoming one of just 18 acts (and eight solo males) with at least that many in the Hot 100's 58-year history. (Madonna heads all acts with 38 top 10s.)
Of course, Drake's longevity on the Hot 100 has required a monster number of charted titles: 154, to be exact. The sum is the most of any solo artist, edging out runner-up Lil Wayne, with 136. Drake's sum trails only the cast of Glee, which made 207 appearances during the show's six-season run on Fox in 2009-15.

^This is the longest streak for an act appearing on every single chart for this lengthy a period of time. Certainly, the popularity of collaborations/featuring credits has aided in this feat.

^Yeah. Features definitely helped him. I wouldn't quite consider this streak quite as legendary as the one that Elton John had from 30 years straight with a Top 40 hit just yet nor Katy's Perry 69 straight weeks in the Top 10 due to that particular asterisk.

There are third-graders who have never lived in a world where Drake wasn't on the Hot 100.
Also, his current streak as a LEAD artist is 93 weeks, dating back to Hotline Bling. (That's just for the curious, and not meant to discredit this incredible accomplishment, which I think exists asterisk-free).

I'd be curious to know who comes close to that and which artists nowadays are on route toward that type of longevity. If I'm not mistaken Rihanna's at 13 and Taylor Swift's at 12. I can't think of anyone else who would come close... Anyone else who I thought had an outside shot at a 10+ year streak (P!nk, Lil' Wayne, Beyoncé) all had gaps. Drake, of course, is at 9. |

I also am not really about that 'asterisk' life, but especially when it comes to hip-hop and r&b collaborations, because typically the artists on those get close to equal time on the track and/or linked up precisely because they want and expect the features to add to the song's success. Nonetheless, I am curious what the longest streak is when you only track someone's lead-artist singles.

Nonetheless, I am curious what the longest streak is when you only track someone's lead-artist singles. Rihanna would be a good place to start. This is what I've been able to come up with for her: She's had a few 52-week-plus streaks, but the longest appears to be the following. 1) "Only Girl (In the World)": debuts 9/25/10, goes 27 weeks. 2) So that falls off 4/2/11. That is the last week on for "What's My Name?", but "S&M" is also on. That debuted 2/5/11 and went 25 weeks (not counting a random Dec. 2010 week). 3) So that falls off 7/30/11. She has "California King Bed" and "Man Down" on at this point, which tide her over for two weeks until: 4) 8/13/11. "Cheers (Drink to That)" debuts, goes 18 weeks. But about halfway through that: 5) 10/8/11. "We Found Love" debuts. That does wonders, as it goes 41 weeks. 6) Which means it doesn't fall off until 7/21/12. By this point, "Where Have You Been" has been on for 2 months. Starting 5/12, that goes 25 weeks (not counting a random Dec. 2011 week). 7) So that falls off 11/3/12. Fortunately, "Diamonds" debuted a few weeks before. 10/13 to be exact. That goes 26 weeks. 8) So that falls off 4/13/13. "Stay" debuted a month and a half prior. 2/23 to be exact. That goes 32 weeks. 9) Which takes her to 9/28/13. And there she stops. TOTAL: 3 years exactly in date terms (more or less), 158 weeks altogether. Singles not mentioned contributed nothing to this run on their own, i.e. they were eclipsed by a longer-runner. (She had two, nearly three singles whose runs all fell within the entirety of just WFL alone!) |

Why am I just now paying attention to this?  This figure likely consists of most of what I outlined above for a streak of just where she's a lead artist. The 216 would actually start with "Run This Town" (all three share equal billing) on 8/15/09, and her lead singles would go up until "Rude Boy" fell off on 7/31/10 - two months short of "Only Girl". To cover that distance she needs the "Love the Way You Lie" feature to make it 216 all consecutive. |

So currently he only has two songs still on the hot 100, and both are rapidly declining. Passionfruit sinks to #80 and Signs is about to drop off at #98. He better have a collab or feature coming out in the next week or two or he runs the risk of losing this streak!!!

"Signs" just picked up a ton of radio adds this week so it'll be back.
Shame nothing from More Life was really promoted. "Blem" should have been a major summer smash.

^I doubt radio airplay will do much to help it, especially if it's only #519 in radio audience according to kworb. Its digital sales are probably just slightly better. It's mostly streaming that will keep it around if it does. It was #45 in Spotify's daily update.
