Linkin Park Scores Sixth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'One More Light'


Linkin Park notches its sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as One More Light debuts atop the tally. The set earned 111,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 25, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 100,000 were in traditional album sales. The album is Linkin Park’s seventh studio effort, and was released on May 25 through Machine Shop/Warner Bros. Records.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 10, 2017-dated chart (where Linkin Park bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Wednesday, May 31 -- one day later than usual, due to the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S.

Earlier in the week, industry forecasters suggested that Linkin Park would start at No. 2 on the chart, with perhaps 90,000 units (with around 80,000 of that sum in album sales). However, the set sold stronger than expected, and it comes out on top.

Topping the chart for the sixth time, Linkin Park joins a small group of rock bands that have done the same. Just nine rock bands in total have scored at least six No. 1 albums: The Beatles (with 19), The Rolling Stones (nine), Led Zeppelin and U2 (both with seven), and Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Eagles, Linkin Park and Metallica (all with six each).

One More Light is Linkin Park’s tenth top 10 album. The band previously visited the top 10 with all six of their earlier studio efforts, along with two remix albums, and the band’s collaborative mash-up set with Jay Z, Collision Course.


At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. rises one spot with 98,000 units (down 16 percent) while the previous week’s leader, Harry Styles’ self-titled album, falls to No. 3 in its second week with 67,000 units (down 71 percent).


Drake’s More Life climbs 7-4 with 57,000 units (down less than 1 percent), Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 1 dips 4-5 with 50,000 units (down 33 percent) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) rises 9-6 with 43,000 units (down 8 percent).


Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic ascends 10-7 with 39,000 units (down 4 percent), the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 soundtrack falls 5-8 with a little more than 35,000 units (down 49 percent) and the Epic AF compilation rebounds 12-9 with 35,000 units (down 2 percent). Closing out the top 10 is Migos’ Culture, which rises 13-10 with 30,000 units (down 4 percent).

I wouldn't say it's justified in that sense. I'm pretty sure THP just lost because of other, stronger debuts. What competition did One More Light have? Week 6 of Kendrick? And it was projected to lose against that earlier in the week.

I haven't listened to the album yet, how was it a sellout? Their brand has pretty much been poppy hard rock, so in that sense their entire career could be considered a sellout.

I haven't listened to the album yet, how was it a sellout? Their brand has pretty much been poppy hard rock, so in that sense their entire career could be considered a sellout.

They're aired soft at times, sure, but they've always been a rockband at their core and for every "Leave Out All the Rest" they release, they release a couple "Given Up"s. Their last album was also super heavy and experimental and was a bold new direction for the band while still having it sounds like an LP album. This is a massive step back IMO.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Guns N' Roses 'Greatest' Hits Landmark 400th Week on Chart

Guns N' Roses' "Greatest Hits" is now one of only seven albums to spend at least 400 weeks on the chart.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated June 10), Linkin Park nabbed its sixth No. 1 album with One More Light, debuting with 111,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 25, according to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

— Guns N’ Roses, Greatest Hits - No. 153 — Guns N’ Roses’ Greatest Hits logs its 400th nonconsecutive week on the chart, making it just one of seven albums to spend at least 400 weeks on the list. The others: Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (927), Johnny Mathis' Johnny’s Greatest Hits (490), the My Fair Lady original cast recording (480), Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend (471), Journey’s Greatest Hits (462) and Metallica’s self-titled album (432).

Guns N’ Roses’ Greatest Hits debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the chart dated April 10, 2004 and has sold 5.93 million copies in the U.S. The album spent 138 consecutive weeks on the list from its debut through the Nov. 25, 2006-dated chart. It then returned to the tally on Dec. 12, 2009, and has been a frequent (but not quite constant) sight on the chart.

Note: from May 25, 1991 until Dec. 5, 2009, older albums (often referred to as catalog albums) were generally barred from charting on the Billboard 200. Instead, they would chart on the separate Top Catalog Albums chart. Starting with the Dec. 5, 2009-dated Billboard 200, catalog albums returned to the chart, making it easier for titles — like Greatest Hits — to rack up long runs on the list.

— Blink-182, California – No. 17 — The band’s most recent studio effort returns to the chart at No. 17, following its deluxe reissue on May 19. The set re-enters the list with 26,000 units earned in the week (up 735 percent), of which 21,000 were in traditional album sales (up 3,233 percent). The new expanded edition includes 12 bonus tracks, and was also reissued on vinyl LP in an assortment of colored variations. In turn, California also re-enters the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 1 with 6,000 copies sold (for its third nonconsecutive week atop the list).

California debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Vinyl Albums chart dated July 23, 2016.

— Lauren Duski, Chris Blue & Jesse Larson, The Voice: The Complete Season 12 Collection – Nos. 26, 50 & 163 — Following the 12th season finale of The Voice, some of its top performers hit the chart with their Voice highlights collections. Second-place finisher Lauren Duski arrives at No. 26 (19,000 units; 1,000 from traditional album sales), winner Chris Blue bows at No. 50 (12,000 units; 1,000 in album sales) and fourth place finisher Jesse Larson debuts at No. 163 (5,000 units; negligible album sales).

— Soundgarden, Superunknown - No. 28 — Now that a full chart tracking week has passed since the death of Chris Cornell on May 17, many albums that he performed on make moves up the chart. His highest ranking title is Soundgarden’s Superunknown, which rises 32-28 with 19,000 units (up 13 percent) and 11,000 in album sales (up 16 percent). A few rungs down the chart, the Singles soundtrack returns to the list at No. 33, following its deluxe reissue on May 19. The reissued album features a number of Cornell’s recordings, both solo and with Soundgarden.

— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 - No. 87 — The musical, which is nominated for 12 Tony Awards, sees it original Broadway cast recording take a bow at No. 87. The set, led by Tony nominee Josh Groban, earned 8,000 units for the week (7,000 in traditional album sales). It also launches at No. 1 on the Cast Albums chart.

— The Notorious B.I.G., Life After Death – No. 173 — The former No. 1 album returns to the list (5,000 units; up 218 percent), concurrent with the debut of his new posthumous collaborations album, The King & I, with Faith Evans. The latter bows at No. 65 with 9,000 units (8,000 in traditional album sales). The new set collects mostly previously released vocals from B.I.G., and marries them to new recordings from Evans as well as a number of guests (including Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Lil’ Kim).
