#3 ~ Concrete Angel
Album: Greatest Hits Track #18 Written by: Rob Crosby, Stephanie Bentley
"She walks to school with the lunch she packed Nobody knows what she's holdin' back Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday She hides the bruises with linen and lace
The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask It's hard to see the pain behind the mask Bearing the burden of a secret storm Sometimes she wishes she was never born
Through the wind and the rain She stands hard as a stone In a world that she can't rise above But her dreams give her wings And she flies to a place where she's loved Concrete angel"
Peak: Billboard's Hot Country Songs: 5 Billboard’s Hot 100: 47
Points: 205

I like "House of a Thousand Dreams", but I recently realized that I get this song confused with "Beautiful Again" and really most of the slower album cuts from "Waking Up Laughing". I generally like them, but I don't play close attention somethings, so they end up sounding all the same to me and I'm not sure why.

Wow, I really thought I was going out on a limb picking "House of a Thousand Dreams" as my top album track, but glad I'm not alone. It may not showcase Martina's powerhouse vocals, but it's such a beautiful song and her gentle vocal carries the song with so much love and care.

Sometimes, I prefer it when the power isn't the focus. As much as I usually enjoy it, it sometimes distracts me from the other elements of the song. I'm hoping we can see a lot more Martina music in this vocal style in the future.

Maybe the themes are vaguely similar, it's just when I listen to them all back to back they just all kind of blend into one for me. It doesn't make much sense, it just happens for some reason. Also I think the juxtaposition of "Beautiful Again" messes with me like all this bad stuff is happening, but everything is all upbeat and happy. Like my head it should be slow, yet it isn't actually. Come to think of it, I really like that about the song. Yet it is also what confuses me about the song altogether.

It would be predictable but "Independence Day" ftw please! Honestly, if it weren't for my knowledge of .indulgecountry 's dislike for "A Broken Wing", I would have absolutely no clue what to expect right now! They are her two most iconic and widely-acclaimed songs for sure But because of him......

#2 ~ A Broken Wing
Album: Evolution Track #4 Written by: James House, Sam Hogin and Phil Barnhart
"She loved him like he was The last man on Earth Gave him everything she ever had He'd break her spirit down Then come lovin' up on her Give a little, then take it back
She'd tell him about her dreams He'd just shoot 'em down Lord he loved to make her cry You're crazy for believin' You'll ever leave the ground He said, Only angels know how to fly
And with a broken wing She still sings She keeps an eye on the sky With a broken wing She carries her dreams Man you ought to see her fly
One Sunday morning She didn't go to church He wondered why she didn't leave He went up to the bedroom Found a note by the window With the curtains blowin' in the breeze
And with a broken wing She still sings She keeps an eye on the sky With a broken wing She carries her dreams Man you ought to see her fly
With a broken wing She carries her dreams Man you ought to see her fly"

#1 ~ Independence Day
Album: The Way That I Am Track #4 Written by: Gretchen Peters
"Well she seemed all right by dawns early light Though she looked a little worried and weak She tried to pretend he wasn't drinkin' again But daddy left the proof on her cheek And I was only eight years old that summer And I always seemed to be in the way So I took myself down to the fair in town On Independence Day
Well word gets around in a small, small town They said he was a dangerous man But mama was proud and she stood her ground She knew she was on the losin' end Some folks whispered and some folks talked But everybody looked the other way And when time ran out there was no one about On Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay it's Independence Day
Well she lit up the sky that fourth of July By the time that the firemen come They just put out the flames, and took down some names And sent me to the county home Now I ain't sayin' it's right or it's wrong But maybe it's the only way Talk about your revolution It's Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay it's Independence Day Roll the stone away It's Independence day"
Peak: Billboard's Hot Country Songs: 12
Points: 87
This is the 3rd single released from Martina's The Way That I Am album This song was first offered to Reba McEntire and other female country singers of the early 90’s who all turned it down In 2003, CMT ranked it #50 in their 100 Greatest Songs of Country Music special. A year later it ranked #2 in their 100 Greatest Videos in Country Music. Songwriter Gretchen Peters won the CMA’s Song of the Year award in 1995 for this song. Gretchen also recorded her own version of this song on her 1996 album The Secret of Life In 1994 Martina won Video of the Year for this Carrie Underwood famously covered this song on her season of American Idol a total of 3 times and even recorded it for the seasons compilation album and it became the B-side to her debut single “Inside Your Heaven”. Also, YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS, this is such a perfect finish to the rankdown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For those poor unfortunate souls who have yet to see Martina in concert, this is her legendary mic stand toss at the end of the first chorus of "Independence Day"

Seriously castleoblivion26 . This has to be the new gold standard for how an artist rankdown should progress. I cannot believe how much time and effort you have put into this presentation. My Tim McGraw rankdown will never be able to measure up! I might have to cancel it! ( )

Hey guys, now that the results are done but we haven't all disappeared yet, I want to bring up an idea I have been thinking about for a few days now. Just to start gauging interest levels... Sometime in the future, I would like to host a series of mini-rankdowns for each of Martina's albums... You know, just very short rankdowns, for those who are most interested. Kinda like normusic is doing with Rihanna's albums right now, only they would probably be much shorter and faster because I can't imagine any more than like 10 of us regularly participating in something like that. Anyway, I have already been working on beautiful graphics and stuff Just want to see if anybody is interested in something like that in the future! It definitely wouldn't start for several months if it ends up happening, because I'm about to host Tim McGraw, followed by Faith Hill, and then George Strait will likely be after that, possibly another year-end list in there somewhere, and then I'm planning to host the 2017 year-end Country rankdown around the new year as well... So there will be plenty of time for people to get excited before this could actually start sometime in the winter :)

throughout the submission process for this "Independence Day" was always Top 3. I think 3 was the lowest it ever got behind "Whatever You Say" and "A Broken Wing". At one point "Wild Angels" got ahead of it as well but it was always short lived. Each of those songs had their detractors where "Independence Day" did not. If "Whatever You Say" couldn't win then this is the song I wanted to win the most. My top 3 was so hard to rank because I love all 3 and they all tend to be interchangeable for me in terms of which I feel is my favorite, though a recent bad breakup tended to help push me towards "Whatever You Say" more currently because the song explains why I ended it lol.
Thank you all for participating and I hope you enjoyed it, and all the really bad graphics I put together lol. Going forward I am going to attempt to bring the same type of attention and presentation to any future rankdowns I host.
If anyone has any thoughts on what I could do better next time I'd really appreciate it! I do know that posting them sooner to one another and not so spread out is something I need to work on next time for sure but anything else? I really hope the whole thing wasn't too much for anyone. I truly enjoyed this. I do have a final recap that I would like to do but I am gonna wait for tomorrow to post that and then I'm gonna open the Kip Moore rankdown sometime this week!

This Rankdown has sure messed up my sleep schedule over in the central time zone, but it has been well worth it. If these graphics you speak of include more gifs I cannot wait to see what they look like. Those gifs are the best by the way.

The only minor gripe that I have is that many of the lyrical hints were pretty easy for me. I was glad you stopped doing that around the top 15 or so, because I didn't want anything to be spoiled as we got to the top 10. I have found that trying to jumble as many hints as possible into a sentence makes the sentence sound messy and the hints stick out like a sore thumb. But just posting an occasional hint in a sentence that otherwise makes sense, people might not even realize that they just read a hint! It's all about sneakiness... Lol! And HECK NO this was not too much!!! Well, at least not for me :bert: Lol! I thought this was like the most awesome rankdown of all time! Edit: Also, I didn't have any complaints about your frequency of posting. You very reliably posted 5-10 every single day until it was done, except for one day this past weekend. It was terrific :)

Like, I couldn't even name all of his albums off the top of my head if you paid me to I'm glad you have faith in me, but mine will probably be just as hint + reveal as yours! Although, never underestimate the power of hint + reveal. That's all I did for the 2014 and 2015 year-end rankdowns, and I think it worked well! I think your Dierks rankdown is going to turn out awesomely!
