I've finished up until "O Holy Night" and I just have to say she has really good songs. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the songs in the rankdown that I'm not familiar with. With the pace I'm going right now, you can pretty much count on me to submit! If I have to say one negative thing about Martina songs, it's the chorus. For most Martina songs I've listened to, the chorus doesn't really do much for me. However, the verses are pretty much perfect for me in a lot of Martina songs, so that makes up for how I feel about the choruses. That's interesting. This is across most of the songs?

Yeah I would say for over half the songs that I've listened to this rankdown, granted there were a lot of songs that were first-time listens for me. But even for the Martina songs I knew beforehand, this seems to be the case. A lot of the choruses are good, but it's not to the point where I like it. I've only ranked 23 songs so far, but I probably can only say I like the choruses for the top 2 plus some that are a bit lower down. For the others, the chorus is just kind of there or there's something I don't like about the chorus that stops me from completely liking the chorus. I can't really point to one thing, but I think for most of them I expect a lot from the chorus given how great the verses are and when the chorus comes it's sort of a letdown.

I'm still working on my list, but I'm keeping my expectations low since not everyone may feel the same way about my tentative top 5. My top 15 mostly consists of songs that I'm strongly obsessed with. There are still bunches of slots to fill on my end, but I'll try to get my list ready by the weekend.

For real tho, I hope we get some more participants in the very near future. These current numbers are quite a travesty :'( Martina is the 8th most successful female country artist of all time, people! And THE most successful from the large crop of popular women who rose to prominence in the '90s!

Is it possible that the rankdowns are too long? There are 70 songs in this one (and I'm not just talking about this one, Tim McGraw's is longer right? Still haven't done that one yet, I want to). Maybe to get more participants just keep it to singles as a lead artist, singles only promoted to one format, or anything to cut the songs down. I don't know, I mean they're fun, I'm glad I've joined, but some of the songs that Martina was featured on with like Don Henley, I never heard. And in like the case of the Carrie rankdown a song like "Can't Stop Loving You" seems unnecessary to include. Those are just my thoughts on getting more participants.

Something has to go on the bottom... Seriously though, if it's because there's too many songs people can request deadline extensions, but I think more factors go into it than just that. I had to extend my Shania Twain rankdown a lot to get the number of lists I wanted and I think most of the songs in her discography were pretty familiar.

Yeah, you have a point about the length potentially holding the number of participants back. But, when you are working with legends, it's kinda hard to avoid having a longer rankdown! The Martina one could definitely have been shorter, but I'm not sure it would have mattered. She has practically 50-60 singles when you include collaborations, which is still pretty long for an artist rankdown. Like, I doubt that many people who are unfamiliar with her would be willing to listen to 55 songs either, so I don't think there was much harm in throwing in a few of her popular album tracks on top of it since the core group of participants were going to be mostly her bigger fans anyway. But you are still probably right about the size contributing to the low numbers. As far as Tim is concerned, his rankdown is slightly bigger with 76 songs, but his is only hits. Like, I could have cut a couple duets or something, but it still would have been around 70 songs! But that is why I gave people a month and a half window to complete that one. And that one is honestly not having quite as much trouble generating participants though, so I'm not really worried about its size. The main difference is probably that Tim has been a consistent hard-hitter for so long, that any casual fan of country music is going to know a large portion of his songs. Whereas in Martina's case she has been around forever, but has had more spotty success, and many people who are familiar with her biggest hits are going to have no knowledge of some of her lesser hits. Plus Tim is more relevant at this stage in his career than she is, so in general there is probably more wide-spread appeal surrounding him among Pulse users. Now, you do raise a good point about collaborations though. I definitely could have survived not having the songs by Don Henley, Reba, Dave Stewart x2, Kid Rock, etc. in this rankdown, even though I love all of them. I agree with you that the collaborations are usually unnecessary. Still, I do think that Martina's catalog is so big in general that even without collaborations, people would have been hesitant to join.

I agree with you that the collaborations are usually unnecessary. Still, I do think that Martina's catalog is so big in general that even without collaborations, people would have been hesitant to join. at me for actually doing that (not that I was completely unfamiliar with her work because I realized I knew some of her bigger hits like "This One's for the Girls" or "Anyway" on top of the only few songs that I thought I knew - I knew the songs themselves but didn't know the titles of the songs [which should've been pretty obvious now that I think about it] or didn't associate with Martina) On one hand, I think just the singles (without collaborations) would've been enough, but on the other hand the album tracks included in this rankdown were pretty strong overall and was glad that it was included. But I'm just the weird one who went into this rankdown without knowing a majority of the songs. I generally do agree with your point that this rankdown's length is fine as it is since it probably wouldn't have made that much of a difference in the number of participants. 70 isn't too different from 50 for the Martina stans or the casual Martina fans so that won't hurt the number of hardcore/casual Martina fans participating. The country music fans who aren't necessarily fans of Martina might decide to do it or not, so maybe the length has an effect here. The rest probably wouldn't do it because even 50 is usually too long for someone who doesn't know her discography at all. Besides, if you wanted more participants, I think this rankdown would've needed to be like 30 songs and not 50 or 70, which does cut out a big chunk of her singles discography and that would be a shame because I have enjoyed a lot of the songs that didn't do so well on the charts as well.

I decided to sit on this. 70 songs are a lot for me and don't have enough time to hear them. I'll be pleased if you tag me in results :)

Yeah, there's just a ton of stuff that I don't know on here (or I can't remember at all), which is why I haven't gotten around to submitting yet. It's gonna take me awhile to listen to 50 of these songs, where it wouldn't have taken me as long to only listen to 25 of them if we did a top 50 instead of a top 75. But then again, when you do rankdowns for artists that have been around forever, it's not really fair to cut out songs just because they were flops because those are sometimes the best ones (because we all know how country radio sucks). I do wish we all wouldn't try and round out rankdowns to end in multiples of 10 or 25 at all times though. If we cut 12 of these and had a top 63, I don't see what the problem with that is if we are cutting holiday songs, insignificant features, and non-singles that are gonna wind up last anyway.
With that said, I'm working on this tonight.

If anyone needs an extension I have no problem giving one. I've stated I would but no one has said they needed more time so I haven't extended it yet. Am thinking I'm going to anyways. Probably going to give 2 weeks because next weekend I am moving and will probably be without internet for a little bit so I can start it the weekend afterwards. Let me know if that works

Just sent mine in. This was one of the harder ones to do because the significant majority of the songs are good to great. There were just a few that I liked less, but none that I hated. In the end, every song had to be ranked. I knew what my top 5 was going to be as soon as I saw the list of songs.

I didn't even realize that was a thing when I made my Dierks rankdown It was too much effort to find legitimate reasons to add songs to make it a nicer number like 40. Let me know if that works I was already going to send mine in sometime tomorrow so I'm good but I would also be fine with an extension. However, two weeks from the 14th would be July 28th, and the only potential problem with that is that the Tim McGraw rankdown is due on the 31st and that one is also pretty huge. Realistically, I don't know how much that would matter though.

i'd love to participate in this but i only know about 20-25 of the songs and i feel like it would take too long to become familiar with the rest. BUT i would looove to follow along with the results :)

I'm okay with an extension given that I discovered this rankdown pretty recently. Currently almost done with my first draft and first playthrough with your playlist. I'd probably only need an extra week instead of two of them, but I'll take what I can get.

Just sent my list. I knew a few more of these than I expected to and actually liked her later 2000's material much more than I remember liking it (or at least disliking it less). I found quite a few discoveries here that I really enjoyed though.

Submitted :)
I have to take back what I said about the chorus in Martina songs because it got much better with multiple listens. I had so many new discoveries in this rankdown and I'm glad I powered through 70 songs!

I totally understand that with legends it's tough to eliminate certain songs, because the catalogue is so extensive. Like I see there is a George Strait and Reba rankdowns coming, and each have some of the biggest catalogue of hits out there, I don't know how you'd cut. But to me a song like "Shiftwork" doesn't need to be included, as it is Kenny Chesney. And you can take out any holiday songs as well, as they usually rank rather low consistently. I'm looking forward to both though.

castleoblivion26, for the record, I will also be moving on pretty much the day the Tim McGraw rankdown is due So I probably won't start revealing mine for at least a few days into August, rather than starting right on the 1st. So you pushing yours back a week or even two might not be too bad of a conflict :)

I've listened to all the songs but I'm torn on how to rank a few songs for various reasons, my list is definitely coming but still tweaking it a bit
