What is this album!? OMG. I hear disco meets Allison Krauss meets pop meets pure bliss. It is one hell of an album.

This really is a beautiful record from top to bottom. Made with very clear intentions and a lot of heart; not for radio consumption or monetary gain. She has a marvelous way of making the most personal stories feel so universal and applicable to all. “Space Cowboy” continues to gut me, to a point where I have to skip it—not because I don’t like it (I love it), but because it genuinely makes me feel its story, and it’s crushing.
“Rainbow” has left me breathless. “High Horse” is outstanding. “Butterflies” is ethereal. “Oh, What A World” feels incredibly special and galactic, if that makes any sense? I’m just so struck by how well done this record is. She’s in a league of her own, and I am so glad she’s sailing through her musicianship without concern for the Nashville machine. They need her far more than she needs them. I’m already perched and ready to see this win some GRAMMYs.

The comparison to the BeeGees is perfect. Happy and Sad took Emotions and turned it into a country jam. Love it.

Reposting from the "High Horse" thread because this thread is probably better suited to my question: I haven't listened to Kacey much, but I just listened the three songs she's released for the upcoming album and I'm a fan of all of them. Is this more pop-leaning than her previous material? Just trying to figure out how ashamed to be over my sleeping on Kacey. Not a big country music fan and remember listening to some of her first album and liking it, but not really being drawn in. Might need to give that another listen. Like, what kind of Lana-inspired country hybrid brilliance is "Butterflies"? I think this is my first time actually posting in a Kacey thread, but I'm a fan of all of her albums (including this one now). Golden Hour is more pop leaning, but I feel that you would appreciate it even more if you listened to the first two albums for context. Same Trailer, Different Park was definitely a country album, but in a very 'approachable' way for a pop fan giving it a listen. Pageant Material was a natural moment of growth for her, but in the more predictable sense of the phrase 'musical growth' by tipping more toward her country roots. Golden Hour somehow combines the best of both those albums' strengths while simultaneously flying light-years beyond them, in that there are so many unexpected - and on paper, disparate - pop elements thrown in here, while still sounding cohesively country and distinctly Kacey.

Now that I had sometime to appreciate this masterpiece, here is my track by track review:
01. Slow Burn - I love the opening lines and the production throughout the song. Overall I think this is one of the good songs that shows the transition from a more traditional sounding country to this album Kacey. 8/10
02. Lonely Weekend - I love the idea of this songs. Also the lines "I got a million things to do but I haven't done a single one, no" and the "There's a little part of me that's got the fear of missin' out" are so very relatable. This one of the moments that Kacey shows her artistic and personal growth. 8/10
03. Butterflies - This is so very catchy, and such a happy song. I guess if they are trying out a single on country radio this might be the safest bet. 8/10.
04. Oh, What A World - I'm not a big fan of the vocoder, but it matches the production and the song. The feeling of this song is so dreamy, and the verses are deceptively deep for such a simple chorus, which ends working very well IMO. 7/10
05. Mother - this is so emotional, the only bad thing is that is too short. It feels incomplete in a way but also like it was meant to be a transition. 8/10
06. Love Is A Wild Thing - This is the second song that could work on country radio in other circumstances. Also, I love the vocals on this one. For sure one of the highlights of this album for me. 10/10
07. Space Cowboy - This is the perfect ballad. The lyrics, the vocals and the production is all wonderful. 10/10
08. Happy & Sad - Again I love the idea behind this track. I relate to the feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop when everything is going great. And I think it's a nice track, would be a standout if it wasn't surrounded by such gems. 7/10
09. Velvet Elvis - This was my least favourite live, but I just love the beat and the chorus flow, so unexpectedly I like this one quite a lot. 8/10
10. Wonder Woman - I have to confess I was expecting something slightly different. The hook is quite nice, and the melody is good, but I do feel this one suffers a bit by being towards the end of the record, by comparison. 7/10
11. High Horse - I am addicted to this. This is catchy but the lyrics are the closer this records gets to sassy Kacey, which is a soft spot of mine. So with the perfect production as it is might be my overall favourite. 10/10.
12. Golden Hour - The title track was some of the most generic lyrics from all the record, but it's sang beautifully and the relative sparse production more than makes up for it. 8/10
13. Rainbow - I am glad Kacey didn't release this earlier on her career (this song was written circa 2013), because it's the perfect album closer, and this specific album close. Perfect as it is. 10/10
Overall - so far my favourite album of 2018, and probably will remain so. I hope the sales are strong, and it sure deserves some awards, but after The Weight of These Wings I am slightly concerned about generic commercial success. Even so, Kacey deserves Grammy for this gem.

Amazing album. I like her first two albums just fine, but this one is the one I see myself playing non-stop.
The two songs that immediately stood out for me on first listen were Happy & Sad and Rainbow. The latter is absolutely stunning and I want it to be the unofficial gay song.

I am liking Velvet Elvis and High Horse the most from this set of songs. It is a very mellow album, and I do wish there was an uptempo or two added instead of the few I don't care for ('Mother', particularly). Another strong effort from Kacey here.

Not that she doesn't deserve it because what I've heard of the album so far is amazing, but she is getting a LOT of coverage and praise for this and the only reason I'm shocked is because country music acts as if she doesn't exist.

She has won several CMAs though, but yea it's interesting that radio doesn't play her music.

After one NPR listen, this album definitely seems worthy of really being a big break for her. It is mellow, but there's more than enough charm and hooks to carry a listener through. A lot of it, particularly my early favorite "Butterflies," feels a bit like Lana-does-Nashville, and I mean that in the best of ways; but it also means that I think the music has to sink in a bit more with me. I don't pick up on lyrics very well on the first listen--never have--and that definitely seems to be Kacey's strongest suit, so I think the album will only continue to open up. But I'm excited to play this more thoroughly tomorrow once it's on Spotify, and then explore her earlier work. In general, I was more enamored by the second half than the first; there was a bit more energy. Initial favorites are "Butterflies" (the trills at the end of those verses ), "High Horse," "Happy & Sad," "Velvet Elvis," and "Rainbow."

It seems like her team’s done a good job getting her major interviews, as well as a street team strategy. They knew CM wouldn’t help her.

She has officially earned hipster cred with this album. The praise reminds me of when Carly Rae released "Emotion"

The real savior or country is covered in sequins and has hair that's big enough to hold all the awards she deserves.

Now, I'm only worried about her numbers... without radio support and not even a music video out to help promote, I really hope the magazine spreads and few TV slots can help her getting the word out about the album release...
