I think my #2 is going to miss the top 3.
I'm surprised the pop girls have kept "Anytime, Any Place" in this long.

19. "Alright"from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) "Worlds could end around me // so in love that I can't see."
Kind of like Rhythm Nation 1814's previous single, "Escapade", "Alright" is a lighthearted affair. The music video is one of Janet's most memorable, stylized like a classic movie musical. It featured Cab Calloway in one of his last onscreen appearances (he only appears at the end, but he is the focus of most of the video). The original album version is one of Janet's longest tracks, lasting six and half minutes, and it was remixed for its single release by Shep Pettibone. Some of the remixes feature a rap by Heavy D. Overall, this song seems well liked by most of you, however a few low votes dragged this down to #19. Average: 24.593 Standard Deviation: 15.258

18. "Come Back to Me"from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) "My abandoned heart // just doesn't understand."
Of Janet's ballad trinity (the one she always does on tour - Let's Wait Awhile / Come Back to Me / Again), this one actually managed to place the highest! Personally, I'm happy to see this one win out. I do wish it could be higher overall, but the fact it even managed top 20 is a pleasant surprise. There are several different versions of the song: the album version has a gorgeous a cappella intro, while the I'm Beggin' You Mix (used as the single version in most places) is a mix with minor differences, including a keyboard intro. A third mix, the Abandoned Heart Mix, is an acoustic take. If that's not enough mixes for you, she also recorded the song in Spanish. Overall, the song has one of the most heartbreaking melodies I've ever heard, and Janet gives one of her most convincing performances on record. In the new radio documentary about Janet, Jam, and Lewis, a soundbite from the recording sessions was played in which Janet expressed her desire to have a voice like Whitney's. Despite her own insecurities, she truly sounds amazing here. Average: 24.148 Standard Deviation: 15.674

I love each and every remix of "Alright" (well, with the exception of the '96 mixes) but that last minute and a half of the album version >>>

17. "Any Time, Any Place"from janet. (1993) "I don't give a damn what they think // I want you now."
So here it is, my #1. I'm definitely sad to see this one go. This track was the fifth single from janet. (in some places, a double a-side with "Throb"), and managed to peak at #2 in 1994. The R. Kelly remix was the version promoted to radio, while the music video had two versions - one with an edit of the album version, and the other with the R. Kelly remix. (Does anyone know which version of the video actually received more play on TV? The album version one is on all her DVDs and the remix one is a bit dirtier so I always kind of assumed the album version got played more, but I wasn't sure). Anyway, the epic seven minute long album version has always been my preference for this track, and while the R. Kelly mix is alright, in terms of remixes I prefer CJ's 12" mix from the janet. remixed album. The song and video really showcase Janet exploring her sexual side, more so than she had done before. While it was probably polarizing for some fans at the time, it set a standard for Janet, and her ballads would keep getting more and more sexual as her career went on (probably peaking somewhere between "Would You Mind" and "Warmth"/"Moist"). Remix recommendation: CJ's 12" Mix (not on YouTube somehow). Average: 23.37 Standard Deviation: 18.437

I.....never liked the R. Kelly remix. The album version [2] is sublime.

16. "Doesn't Really Matter"from Nutty Professor II: The Klumps Soundtrack (2000) and All For You (2001) "My love for you // unconditional love too."
Like bat1990 , the All For You era was my first taste of Janet. I started watching MTV with my sister in late 1998/early 1999, which jump started my obsession with pop music. A year or so later, Janet would come out with this song and it would become my very first impression of who Janet Jackson was. I remember knowing that Janet had been famous for years, but this was my only sample of what her music sounded like. I ended up getting the CD single (though I also had it on Now 5), and a year later, the song "All For You" would convince me that I wanted her new album, which also happened to have this song on it (in a slightly different edit). In recent years, this song had become more forgettable for me, but a few months ago, I got back into it and it's now one of my favorites again. I love how light hearted it is. Coincidentally, not too long ago, Nutty Professor II was on as I was flipping channels. I watched some of it and, well, I'm just happy it gave us this song. Remix recommendation: Jonathan Peters' Club MixAverage: 23 Standard Deviation: 16.002

Ahh, my sweet "Doesn't Really Matter"
I love to pull it out for karaoke because most people can't understand Janet's mumbles but I know every word! The song is so sweet and the video is amazing.

DRM is ranked too low. Don't know what I was thinking. I remember she killed that performance at the VMA's.

15. "Nasty"from Control (1986) "No, my first name ain't baby. // It's Janet. Miss Jackson, if you're nasty."
"Nasty" was the second single from Control, and it silenced any doubt that the success of "What Have You Done For Me Lately" might be a one-off. From the starting "give me a beat!" to the climax of, "Miss Jackson, if you're nasty," "Nasty" remains one of Janet's most iconic singles to date. Average: 21.778 Standard Deviation: 14.75

Same. I LOVE the anti-cat-calling sentiment, but I never loved the song itself as much as her other material.

I love "Nasty" but there was so much good stuff to choose from. I started to feel like I underranked it after seeing my #32 ranking but then looking back at my list, it got quite competitive in the upper half. That being said, great showing for this!

14. "Runaway"from Design of a Decade: 1986/1996 (1995) "The one thing missing was you."
This lighthearted song was the first of two new songs for Janet's compilation album Design of a Decade: 1986/1996. It is one of Janet's poppiest songs, and for years was used for as part of a "whimsical" medley on tour, usually with songs like "Escapade". Most of you seem to really like the song, with a majority of voters scoring it higher than 30, and seven putting it in their top 10. Given that Janet briefly went back to A&M after joining Virgin in the early '90s, the two new songs she recorded for them (this and "Twenty Foreplay") are becoming increasingly hard to find on the internet. This was something I noticed by doing this rankdown. Even on Number Ones, you cannot stream this track or purchase it individually. I'm sure it's contractual, but I'm hoping it changes eventually. I knew the compilation was released on A&M, but I wonder why Virgin allowed her to record for them AND tack on TTWLG. Interesting...

13. "Together Again"from The Velvet Rope (1997) "Dancing in moonlight // I know you are free."
These eliminations are getting harder and harder. The second single from The Velvet Rope, "Together Again" is a house/dance pop song about the loss of a loved one. It was originally written as a ballad, but Janet reconstructed it as a dance song to be more of a celebration of life rather than something mournful. Janet specifically dedicated the song to her friends that had died of AIDS. Several remixes of the song were made by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, one of which, the Deeper remix, is structured more like the original song was supposed to be and even had its own music video. The song went on to be her 8th Hot 100 #1 and was a huge international hit as well. Average: 21.296 Standard Deviation: 17.903
