JAY-Z Scores 14th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With '4:44'
The superstar extends his own record for the most No. 1s among soloists.
JAY-Z collects his 14th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his latest release, 4:44, debuts atop the tally. According to Nielsen Music, in the week ending July 13, the set earned 262,000 equivalent album units -- a larger-than-initially-expected sum, and the fourth-largest week of 2017 for any album. Of its total, 174,000 units were in traditional album sales.
4:44’s No. 1 arrival extends JAY-Z’s record as the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums in the 61-year history of the Billboard 200 chart. He distances himself farther ahead of the two acts with the second-most leaders among soloists: Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand, who each have 11 chart-toppers. Among all acts, JAY-Z has the second-most leaders, behind only The Beatles, which have 19 No. 1s.
JAY-Z also furthers his own record as the artist with the most debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as all 14 of his albums have bowed in the top slot. (Springsteen has the second-most No. 1 debuts, with eight.)
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
The new July 29-dated chart (where JAY-Z starts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 18.
4:44 was initially issued on June 30 (via S. Carter Enterprises/Roc Nation) for one week of streaming exclusivity through Tidal. However, Tidal did not report data for the album to Nielsen Music for the week ending July 6, so the album did not debut on the July 22-dated chart. (In addition, by July 2, the album was also offered as a free download -- sponsored by Sprint -- via the web site 444.tidal.com. The free downloads were ineligible to chart, per Billboard’s current pricing policy.)
Then, on July 7, the album became widely available to most streaming services (but not Spotify, as JAY-Z pulled his catalog from the service in April) and to retailers as both a download and CD (with three bonus tracks).
Overall, 4:44’s launch of 262,000 units grants the album the fourth-largest week of 2017, behind the debuts of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (603,000 units), Drake’s More Life (505,000) and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) (451,000).
Of 4:44’s 174,000 sales in the week ending July 13, the set sold 131,000 as a download and 43,000 on CD.
Despite 4:44’s absence from Spotify, the album still generated the fourth-biggest streaming debut of 2017. Of its total 262,000-unit start, 7,000 were in TEA units, while SEA units represented 82,000 units. The latter sum equals 122.4 million streams of the album’s songs. In terms of streaming debuts in 2017, it trails only Drake’s More Life (257,000 SEA units; 384.8 million song streams), Lamar’s DAMN. (227,000 SEA units; 340.6 million song streams) and Sheeran’s ÷ (90,000 SEA units; 134.6 million song streams).
JAY-Z’s previous album, Magna Carta…Holy Grail, debuted at No. 1 in 2013 with 528,000 copies sold in its first week (before the chart transitioned to a consumption-ranked tally in 2014). Like 4:44, Magna Carta was issued in a unique fashion: it was first released (on July 4, 2013) as a free download to certain Samsung phone and tablet users who had downloaded a JAY-Z-centric app. (One million copies were available for free to fans through the app.) It then became widely available to retailers on July 9.
Every one of JAY-Z’s solo studio albums have reached No. 1 since 1998’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life (which was also his first No. 1). His 14 chart-toppers also include three collaborative efforts: one each with R. Kelly (Unfinished Business), Linkin Park (MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents: Collision Course) and Kanye West (Watch the Throne).
The rest of the new top 10 on the July 29-dated Billboard 200 chart will be revealed in a separate story posting later today (July 16).

21 Savage & Haim Debut in Top 10 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Rapper 21 Savage and rock band Haim debut in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart, as their newest albums bow at Nos. 2 and 7, respectively. Meanwhile, as reported earlier, JAY-Z clocks his 14th No. 1 on the tally, as 4:44 bows atop the list.
JAY-Z’s latest starts with 262,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 13, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 174,000 units were in traditional album sales.
In the runner-up slot behind JAY-Z on the new Billboard 200 chart is 21 Savage’s Issa Album, which launches with 77,000 units (22,000 in traditional album sales). The set was powered largely by streams, as it generated 51,000 SEA units (equaling 77 million streams for the songs on the album). The remainder of the album’s total start was logged by 7,000 TEA units.
Issa Album is 21 Savage’s debut solo studio effort, and grants the rapper his first top 10 and second chart entry overall. He previously logged a No. 23-peaking set with his Metro Boomin collaboration, Savage Mode, in in February. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. is steady at No. 3 on the new Billboard 200 with 54,000 units (down 3 percent), while DJ Khaled’s Grateful falls from No. 1 to No. 4 in its third chart week with 50,000 units (down 28 percent).
Rap albums occupy the top four slots on the Billboard 200 for the first time in more than two years. The chart last housed an all-rap top four on the April 18, 2015-dated list, when Wale’s The Album About Nothing bowed at No. 1, followed by the then-surging Furious 7 soundtrack (rising 17-2), the debut of Ludacris’ Ludaversal at No. 3 and Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly (falling 1-4).
At No. 5 on the new Billboard 200, Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) is a non-mover with 36,000 units (down 3 percent), while Imagine Dragons’ Evolve slips from No. 4 to No. 6 with 35,000 units (down 21 percent).
Rock band Haim nabs its second top 10 album with the arrival of its second effort, Something to Tell You, at No. 7. It launches with 32,000 units (26,000 in traditional album sales). The sibling trio’s debut effort, Days Are Gone, debuted and peaked at No. 6 in 2013 with 26,000 sold in its first week (before the chart transitioned to a consumption-based ranking in 2014).
Rounding out the new top 10 are Calvin Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (falling 2-8 with 30,000 units in its second week; down 55 percent), the Moana soundtrack (10-9 with a little more than 29,000 units; down 4 percent) and Drake’s More Life (9-10 with 29,000 units; down 10 percent).

www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-jay-z-closes-beatles-204410039.htmlChart Watch: Jay-Z Closes in on the Beatlesby Paul Grein Yahoo Music, July 17, 2017 Jay-Z lands his 14th No. 1 album as 4:44 enters the Billboard 200 in the top spot. Only one other artist in chart history has amassed as many as 14 No. 1 albums. The Beatles have tallied 19. But Jay-Z ties the Beatles in one key respect — most albums of new material that have reached No. 1. All 14 of Jay-Z’s No. 1 albums are collections of new material. The Beatles’ tally of 19 No. 1 albums includes five compilations of vintage recordings — The Beatles/ 1967-1970, Anthology 1, 2, and 3, and the single-disc compilation 1. 4:44 is Jay-Z’s 11th consecutive solo studio album to reach No. 1. (His other three No. 1 albums are an EP with Linkin Park and full-length collabos with R. Kelly and Kanye West.) That’s the longest string of consecutive No. 1 studio albums in chart history (discounting collaborations with other artists). Jay-Z’s last solo studio album to miss the No. 1 spot was his sophomore release, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 in November 1997. It’s extraordinary for an artist to maintain this level of heat for 20 years. It goes without saying that Jay-Z has amassed more No. 1 albums than any other African-American artist in history. Wanna know who’s in second place? If you combine solo and group recordings, it’s his wife, Beyoncé, who has reached No. 1 eight times — with all six of her solo studio albums plus two albums with Destiny’s Child. Wanna know who’s in third place? It’s a tie involving Drake (he’s Canadian, but close enough), Janet Jackson, and Kanye West, all of whom have had seven No. 1 albums. I’ve got to mention Michael Jackson, who would have had seven No. 1 albums if Billboard had allowed catalog albums, like his compilation Number Ones, to appear on the Billboard 200 in the summer of 2009. (They do now.) 4:44 moved 262K in equivalent units this week. That includes 174K in traditional album sales. Technically, 4:44 is in its second week of release. The album was released on June 30 for one week of exclusivity through Tidal. However, Tidal chose not to report data for the album to Nielsen Music for the week ending July 6, so the album didn’t debut on last week’s chart. It was released to most streaming services and retailers on July 7 through Roc Nation. Jay-Z’s “The Story of O.J.” is the week’s top new entry on the Hot 100 at No. 23. The title song from his new album debuts at No. 35. The rapper first cracked the top 40 as a lead artist in November 1998 with “Can I Get A…” (featuring Amil and Ja Rule). Top AlbumsHip-hop albums occupy the top four positions on the Billboard 200 this week. You already know about Jay-Z. 21 Savage’s first full-length album, Issa Album, debuts at No. 2. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. holds at No. 3 in its 13th week. DJ Khaled’s Grateful drops from No. 1 to No. 4 in its third week. This is the first time in more than two years that rap albums have occupied the top four slots. This last happened in April 2015, when the top four were Wale’s The Album About Nothing, the Furious 7 soundtrack, Ludacris’s Ludaversal, and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ holds at No. 5 in its 19th week. It spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Sheeran’s album logs its 14th week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. That’s the longest run for an album by a male solo artist since Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii soundtrack had 18 weeks on top in 1962. Imagine Dragons’ Evolve drops from No. 4 to No. 6 in its third week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. HAIM lands its second top 10 album as Something to Tell You debuts at No. 7. The album enters the Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 2. The trio received a Grammy nom for Best New Artist of 2014, but lost to Sam Smith. Calvin Harris’ s Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 drops from its No. 2 peak to No. 8 in its second week. The Moana soundtrack inches up from No. 10 to No. 9 in its 34th week. The album peaked at No. 2. Moana logs its 14th week at No. 1 on Top Soundtracks. That’s the longest run by any soundtrack since Frozen logged 44 weeks on top in 2013-14. Both albums, of course, are from animated Disney movies. Frozen was the 53rd animated feature film from Disney. Moana was the 56th. Drake’s More Life dips from No. 9 to No. 10 in its 17th week. It spent its first three weeks on top. Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic drops from No. 9 to No. 11, ending (for now at least) a 33-week run in the top 10. Two other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. 2 Chainz’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music drops from No. 6 to No. 12. Stone Sour’s Hydrograd plunges from No. 8 to No. 74. Radiohead’s OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997 2017 reenters the chart at No. 23. This nearly matches the original album’s original peak position (No. 21) in 1997. The album hits No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain soundtrack. Chris Stapleton’s From a Room: Volume 1 drops from No. 22 to No. 30 in its 10th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The album logs its sixth week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. As of this week, the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has sold 5 million copies (in traditional album sales) since Nielsen began tracking U.S. music sales in 1991. Of course, the 1967 classic sold millions more in its first 24 years of release. Sgt. Pepper’s is close behind the Beatles’ 1969 album, Abbey Road, which has sold 5,374,000 copies since 1991. Sgt. Pepper’s is a more legendary album, but more than a few fans prefer Abbey Road. Coming Attractions: Look for French Montana’s Jungle Rules to be next week’s top new entry, right around No. 3.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/7874022/billboard-200-chart-moves-ed-sheerans-divide-tracks-surpass-1-billion-usBillboard 200 Chart Moves: Ed Sheeran's 'Divide' Tracks Surpass 1 Billion U.S. StreamsBy Keith Caulfield | July 21, 2017 Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart: — Ed Sheeran, ÷ (Divide) - No. 5 — The tracks on Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) have now collectively earned more than 1 billion on-demand audio streams in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. In total, the songs on his album have racked up 1.02 billion streams through the week ending July 13. The latest tracking frame pushed the album over the 1 billion threshold, as it earned another 24 million streams during the week. ÷ (Divide) follows Sheeran’s previous album, x (Multiply), which has tallied 1.51 billion streams for its tracks since its release in 2014. Both albums debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. — Radiohead, OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997-2017 – No. 23 — Thanks to the July 7 release of this deluxe reissue in a lavish boxed set and on vinyl, the album returns to the chart at No. 23 with 17,000 units earned in the week (up 472 percent). Of that sum, 16,000 were in traditional album sales (up 957 percent). And, of that sales figure, 8,000 were on vinyl and 7,000 were on CD. (The album bows at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart.) The reissue was initially released on June 23 as a download and standard CD reissue, and it launched at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 dated July 15 with 13,000 units (of that sum, 10,000 were in album sales -- mostly from downloads). Then, the album fell off the chart for a week, only to return a week later (at a new high of No. 23), thanks to its boxed set and vinyl release on July 7. The original OK Computer album peaked at No. 21 in 1997, and was the second of 10 top 40-charting albums for the band. — Katy Perry, Witness - No. 20 — The former No. 1 album zips from No. 30 to No. 20 with 18,000 units (up 27 percent) and 12,000 copies sold (up 63 percent). The set continues to benefit from a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion in association with Perry’s upcoming Witness: The Tour. — Imagine Dragons, Night Visions – No. 85 — The band’s debut studio album clocks its 250th week on the chart as the album rises 88-85. The set debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Sept. 22, 2012-dated list and has sold 2.74 million copies in the U.S. — Toro y Moi, Boo Boo – No. 136 — The singer/songwriter/producer earns his fourth charting effort on the list, as Boo Boo bows at No. 136 with 5,000 units (3,000 in traditional album sales). The set also launches at No. 5 on Independent Albums, No. 18 on Alternative Albums and No. 29 on Top Rock Albums.
