I haven't yet done a reminder post in here since starting the thread. Yet I've already received 7 rankdowns. <3 Deadline is still August 20 so it's just under 2 weeks away. Use that time to relive 1996. I've been listening to a Casey's Top 40 from August 1996 over the weekend. It's been fun! 1996 is great. Also, major shoutout to Leaf for the spotlfy playlist! Maybe I'll double your point value. The only thing that jumped out at me was that there is a radio remix of Only Love by Sophie B. Hawkins, though I suspect it's not likely to be on Spotify and it's not too too different.

I'll probably pass on this one.
There's way too much I don't know.

I'll try to do this. A few of these I really need to re-listen to to get an opinion.
I'm assuming we're using the acoustic-styled mix of Lucky Love and not the reggae version since that was the one pushed to NA?

I was gonna say, I'll just keep tagging until it's too late. I'll try to do this. A few of these I really need to re-listen to to get an opinion. I'm assuming we're using the acoustic-styled mix of Lucky Love and not the reggae version since that was the one pushed to NA? Either the acoustic mix or the album version. But I suppose in cases like these, whatever version you're most familiar with is what you'd be ranking. There are a few songs from this year where I'm more familiar (or just like better) versions that aren't the most common ones.

Thanks!
Looking over this, I have my top 2 I think, but the rest is really difficult.

Can I have 8 #1s and 23 Top 5s?

I didn't actually care for my probable top 2 songs before listening to this playlist. My probable #1 should do well if the results play out anything like 1998's, although I can see my #2 getting a more middling response. That's definitely the way I felt about it before.

nah I was only going to do this if California Love was included (aka if it was the actual billboard year end list) but I'm rooting for Wonderwall I guess

This list has more that 30 songs I love. That doesn't happen to me anymore. Not since Pop became Popart, so I'm definitely submitting mine.

Three too many for me. It really does speak to how good this set is when my #52 is the cutoff for songs that I like (and I don't genuinely dislike anything until #89).

I just started doing this rankdown and holy f**k. Aussie girl group Bardot's 'I Should've Never Let You Go' (a single from 2000) is almost literally the same song as Brandy's 'Sittin' Up In My Room'.

Submitted my list... might have been the hardest rankdown I've done yet. What a great year with lots of old favorites and a few really good discoveries. I like 75% of the stuff here, and only actively hate a handful of songs. I kinda feel bad for ranking some songs low, but what can ya do?

Thanks everyone for your lists so far! I haven't opened any of them yet but will probably start compiling soonish. There's still about a week and a half. Keep em coming!

I am working on this, been listening to the songs and have my list halfway completed. Having a hard time with my top 50 because I like so many songs

I liked my share of the alt stuff in the '98 rankdown (impotent rage aside re: pop/r&b getting utterly screwed over) but the alt stuff here was weak. I think just about all of it ended up in my bottom half this time around.

Really looking forward to the results of this one. I'm gonna really show my age here, but 96 is freshman year of college for me (and a bit of sophomore year also). Everyone had their tower of CDs displayed in their dorm room, and EVERYONE had Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, including me. I ranked one or two of those songs pretty high, but it actually hasn't held up that well for me. I played the hell out of that album at the time.

My top 7 songs are all Alternative, but I treated the Urban and dance songs pretty well too. It's mostly the more middle-of-the-road/AC-leaning stuff that lands lower for me.

Arguing with you before this rankdown even begins lol but there is nothing weak about Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, Cranberries. And even the softer stuff from Sheryl, Alanis and Gin Blossoms is great. What a nice mix of music there was back then!

Alanis and No Doubt did well with me, and I think Smashing Pumpkins snuck into my top half? But I guess I don't tend to associate Alanis/No Doubt with 'alt' so much 'cause I heard them on pop radio as a kid.
