Sucks that Alanis didn't end up placing any songs in the top 10 (like, what? I was absolutely anticipating seeing Ironic in the top 5), but I'm sososososososo glad my #1 made it.

I don't want to see the two big 95 songs win. But again, Don't Speak or Just A Girl.

No top 10 for Alanis. Now isn't that ironic? Don't you think?
No, that actually isn't ironic at all, it's just a thing that is disappointing. Just like every single thing she mentioned in the song*. Eyeroll.
*except for 'meeting the man of my dreams, then meeting his beautiful wife' part. That is somewhat ironic, since presumably the man of your dreams would be single and not the kind of jerk who would cheat on his current wife or drop her like a bad habit for someone else he just met. I really liked that line. The rest? Eh. I have to really be in the mood for 'this song is ironically not ironic' meta.

That's a great final 10! Have to say they all represent the year of 1996 very well!

There's one line in the song that I think is ironic. I forget which one though. I need to go through it and decide. But yeah, four songs and all are out between 21 and 11. Meanwhile, No Doubt places all three of their songs in the Top 10. Should I blame the overlapping No Doubt/Gwen rankdown with this one for suddenly making Pulse stan for ND?

Meanwhile, No Doubt places all three of their songs in the Top 10. Should I blame the overlapping No Doubt/Gwen rankdown with this one for suddenly making Pulse stan for ND? I don't know, I think that No Doubt's success here has more to do with those three songs being, arguably, their most popular songs from their most popular album more than any overlap from the Gwen/ND rankdown. Hell, "Don't Speak" is one of the most popular songs of the entire decade. 1 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 21 | 22 And 21/22 are songs that I unequivocally love, so...yeah, I think it's safe to say that I'm the person that is happiest with this top ten. Who will be the #10? My hunch is "Missing", though...
What are you most surprised by? Least surprised by? I'm pleasantly surprised to see "Missing" in the top ten. I'm ESPECIALLY pleasantly surprised to see "Killing Me Softly" make it. I was terrified that it wouldn't do all that well going into the rankdown, and I'm quite happy that it did do very well. "Don't Speak" is such a non-surprise that it would have been the biggest surprise of the rankdown if it didn't go top ten.
Why not predict how you think the Top 10 will go? 10) Missing 9) Waterfalls 8) Killing Me Softly 7) Spiderwebs 6) Just a Girl 5) Wonderwall 4) Kiss from a Rose 3) 1979 2) Fantasy 1) Don't Speak (I'm fully prepared for this prediction to be way off)

Wow @ No Doubt x3 in the Top 10. Rooting for "Fantasy," "Waterfalls," or "Don't Speak" to win preferably.
And Walrus needs to gtfo asap.

my remaining ranks: 1 | 5 | 7 | 8 | 10 13 | 14 | 20 27 36 (I do like this song quite a bit too)

1 3 5 6 7 15 16 26 29 32
None of these are songs I dislike. In retrospect, I can't believe I ranked my #29 song that low. OTOH I feel like my #26 song is overranked for my particular tastes, but I had a hard time deciding where to put it because objectively it's a classic song that doesn't warrant being ranked much lower. #32 wasn't as great on relisten as I remember thinking it was back in 1996 which is the only reason it's as low as it is. Still, it's good.
I think I'm most (pleasantly) surprised about Missing because it didn't fare that well in my #2s rankdown, but we have a different set of participants here and a different set of songs for it to go up against. Other than that, nothing feels shocking.
I'll guess Killing Me Softly will be #10? Or maybe 1979. Shot in the dark. I don't quite have a guess for the order of the top 10 but based on the No Doubt rankdown results, I think it's safe to say Don't Speak will be their highest placing song, followed by Spiderwebs and then Just a Girl. I'm iffy on whether Fantasy can eke out a top five spot. I would have pegged KFAR as an easy top five but indulgecountry's disdain for the walrus has me second-guessing myself.

Awww farewell to my #1. I ranked this higher than Fantasy mostly because I consider Fantasy more of a 1995 hit lol. Either way, this is one of Mariah's best songs. It reminds me so much of this time period yet does not sound dated whatsoever.

I'm glad Alanis (I thought Ironic was a top 5 contender) and Donna Lewis didn't make top 10, but I was hoping that Sheryl would sneak in.

Can't say that I'm not disappointed that ABMB didn't make top 10 and the same for "You Learn" ("Ironic" I associate more with 1995) but I can't be mad at this Top 10 at all. The thing is that 1996 was such a GREAT year in music, so you can't really go wrong with many a combination of the songs on this list. I love every single one of the songs that made the top 10. The only exception is "Kiss From A Rose", which, sure, I've always thought was a fine song but I've never been gaga over it like a great many others are. Though its no surprise to see it in the top 10 as I know its well-liked. at .indulgecountry and his walrus comment though. I spit my coffee out this morning as I laughed heartily. I am pleasantly surprised, however, that "Missing" is in the top 10. I hope KFAR is out before it. Also pleasantly surprised to see "Spiderwebs" in the top 10. The No Doubt love is amazing! Its not in my top 10 only because of how many other songs I loved that year but it easily could have been were I to re-rank on any given day. #4, 5, 6, 8 #11, 12, 14, 18 #35 #42 Being that my #1 is out, I'll take any of these other songs as the winner, except KFAR.

TBH, I was surprised to see Kiss From A Rose get so much love early in this thread when people were predicting it would do so well. I didn't realize people loved it so much so now seeing that it's isn't out yet, that was another surprise.

The next reveal is the first song to have double-digit Top 10 rankings! But 2 of the 3 remaining players with a Bottom 10 left finally lose theirs.

lol, I called it, but I didn't really want this to show up yet. The Todd Terry remix is just so good. The original is fine, but the remix just feels right. I think #9 is either going to be Seal or Oasis.

Seal won't be next, sadly. So glad EBTG made it this far. Todd Terry worked wonders on this song and I love every second of it every time I hear it.

I think #9 is either going to be Seal or Oasis. Sure! - #9 -Oasis - WonderwallCHR/Pop Yearend Rank | #40 Hot 100 Yearend Rank | #56- This was Oasisβ first hit on the CHR/Pop chart, and it eventually reached #9. They would hit #9 again with Champagne Supernova, both in 1996. They had a third hit from Whatβs The Story (Morning Glory), Donβt Look Back In Anger, which only made it up to #32. A year later theyβd have their last Top 40 hit with Donβt Go Away, hitting #36. - I hate Oasis. But I love the singles from this album. Theyβre very of-the-time and full of nostalgia for me, so it wasnβt really hard to rank both songs high on my list, I do it for the songs and not the fact that theyβre such assholes. | Points: 2132 | | Average: 27.5 | | Median: 21 | | St.Dev: 25.62 | - Wonderwall is the first song to be revealed with 10 Top 10 placements. - Despite ranking 8 spots higher, this song has lower median than Champagne Supernova, which had a medium of #17. - 6 of the Top 10 have #1 ranks, which means the remaining 4 didnβt have anyone rank them as their #1. But all 10 got at least one Top 3 placement across the 29 contributing lists. Wonderwallβs highest was #2. - With π
