JAY-Z's '4:44' Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, French Montana Debuts at No. 3
As expected, JAY-Z’s 4:44 notches a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set, which bowed atop the tally a week ago, earned 87,000 equivalent album units in the week ending July 20, according to Nielsen Music. That sum is down 67 percent compared to its bow of 262,000.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 5-dated chart (where JAY-Z holds at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 25.
4:44 sold 61,000 in traditional album sales in its second week (down 65 percent from 173,000). The album was also down in streaming and track equivalencies, falling 72 percent in SEA units (22,000 -- down from 82,000) and 52 percent in TEA units (3,000 -- down from 7,000).
JAY-Z now has a cumulative total of 25 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Of his 14 No. 1 albums, seven have spent a single week at No. 1, while five have racked up two weeks at No. 1 (including 4:44). Two of his chart-toppers clocked three or more weeks at No. 1: 1998’s Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life (five weeks at No. 1) and 2001’s The Blueprint (three weeks at No. 1).
The only rap act with more weeks at No. 1 in the 61-year history of the chart is Eminem, with 31 total weeks atop the list.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 is Kendrick Lamar’s former No. 1, DAMN., which rises one spot in its 14th week on the list (56,000 units, up 3 percent). The album has yet to depart the top three since its debut at No. 1 on the May 6-dated chart.
French Montana earns the only debut in the top 10, as his second studio album, Jungle Rules, bows at No. 3 with 52,000 units (16,000 in traditional album sales). The new set surpasses the peak of his only other charting effort, his debut studio set, Excuse My French, which peaked at No. 4 in its opening frame (June 8, 2013). Excuse My French launched with 56,000 copies sold (before the chart transitioned to a consumption-based tally in late 2014).
Back on the new Billboard 200, DJ Khaled’s former leader Grateful holds at No. 4 with 43,000 units (down 14 percent), 21 Savage’s Issa Album slips 2-5 in its second week with 40,000 units (down 48 percent) and Ed Sheeran’s former No. 1 ÷ (Divide) descends 5-6 with 34,000 units (down 5 percent).
Imagine Dragons’ Evolve moves 6-7 with 33,000 units (down 6 percent) while the Moana soundtrack climbs a rung to No. 8 with a little more than 28,000 units (down 3 percent).
Khalid’s American Teen returns to the top 10 (and its peak rank) after four months, as the set rises 13-9 with 28,000 units (up 6 percent). The album debuted at No. 9 on the March 25-dated list, and then departed the top 10, falling as low as No. 21 on the May 27 chart. American Teen is up in album sales (4,000; up 15 percent), TEA units (4,000; up 8 percent) and SEA units (20,000; up 4 percent). The rise of the album is concurrent with the continued popularity of its single “Location,” which has spent more than four months lodged in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart (having reached No. 16).
Closing out the new Billboard 200’s top 10 is Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, which ascends 11-10 with just under 28,000 units (down 2 percent).

Four Linkin Park Albums Return to Billboard 200 Chart7/23/2017 by Keith Caulfield On the new Billboard 200 albums chart dated Aug. 5, four of Linkin Park’s albums return to the ranking as fans remember the group’s late frontman, Chester Bennington, who died on July 20. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 5-dated chart — which reflects tracking activity in the week ending July 20 — will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 25. Linkin Park’s most recent studio effort, the former No. 1 One More Light, re-enters at No. 17 with 23,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 20 (up 461 percent). The album sold 18,000 in traditional album sales (up 730 percent). One More Light bowed at No. 1 on the June 10-dated chart, marking the act’s sixth leader. The band’s debut effort, 2000’s No. 2-peaking Hybrid Theory, climbs back onto the tally at No. 27 with 15,000 units (up 279 percent) and 8,000 copies sold (up 312 percent). The group’s second studio album (and first No. 1), 2003’s Meteora, returns to the list at No. 41 with 11,000 units (up 347 percent). The set sold 5,000 copies (up 533 percent). Lastly, the band’s 2007 No. 1 album Minutes to Midnight re-enters at No. 115 with 6,000 units earned (up 310 percent) and 2,000 copies sold (up 624 percent). Over on the Top Rock Albums chart, the four titles re-enter at Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 27, respectively. It’s likely the albums will rise on the lists dated Aug. 12, which will reflect the first full tracking week following Bennington’s passing on July 20.

Lol people are trying it. Views is the only Drake album that spent longer in the top 10, and that was with jumbo hits. 17 weeks in the top 10 is not "fast." Lorde, Katy Perry, and Logic plummeting out from the top spot is falling fast.

I was kidding...
...A bit, because tbh Views spent 10+ weeks at #1
Streaming era clearly favors Drake so the fact that none of the songs from More Life are in top 40 on Hot 100 and the album is not in top ten is a bit so-so in his standards.

www.yahoo.com/music/chart-watch-first-time-ever-hip-hop-top-five-205125886.htmlChart Watch: For the First Time Ever, an All-Hip-Hop Top Fiveby Paul Grein Yahoo Music July 24, 2017 For the first time in chart history, hip-hop albums make a clean sweep of the top five spots on the Billboard 200 this week. Jay-Z‘s 4:44 is No. 1 for the second straight week; Kendrick Lamar‘s DAMN. inches up from No. 3 to No. 2 in its 14th week; French Montana’s Jungle Rules debuts at No. 3; DJ Khaled‘s Grateful holds at No. 4 in its fourth week; and 21 Savage‘s Issa Album drops from its No. 2 peak to No. 5 in its second week. Before this week, hip-hop albums occupied the top four positions on three occasions. Jay-Z was also on top the first time it happened, the week of Oct. 17, 1998. That was the week he landed his first No. 1 album, Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life. The rest of the top four were Outkast’s Aquemini, A Tribe Called Quest’s The Love Movement, and Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hip-hop albums next occupied the top four positions the week of April 18, 2015. The top four were Wale’s The Album About Nothing, the Furious 7 soundtrack, Ludacris’s Ludaversal, and Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. It happened for a third time last week. Why is this happening more often than it used to? A change in methodology for the Billboard 200 in December 2014 boosted the fortunes of hip-hop albums. Before that date, the chart was based strictly on traditional album sales. With the changeover, streaming and digital track sales are also factored in. Billboard and Nielsen still compile an Album Sales chart, but it doesn’t get one-10th of the attention of the Billboard 200. (On the Album Sales chart this week, there are just three hip-hop albums in the top five — 4:44, DAMN., and Jungle Rules.) Here are some individual notes on this week’s top three albums. 4:44 is Jay-Z’s fourth consecutive studio album to spend two weeks at No. 1. The streak began with 2009’s The Blueprint 3 and continued with 2011’s Watch the Throne (a collabo with Kanye West) and 2013’s Magna Carta…Holy Grail. In all, seven of Jay’s 14 albums have spent multiple weeks on top. DAMN. has spent its entire 14-week run inside the top three positions. Jungle Rules is French Montana’s second top five album in a row. His 2013 debut, Excuse My French, reached No. 4. The lead single, “Unforgettable” (featuring Swae Lee), leaps into the top five on this week’s Hot 100. Top AlbumsFour Linkin Park albums return to the chart in the wake of frontman Chester Bennington’s tragic suicide last week. The band’s current album, One More Light, re-enters the chart at No. 17. The album opened at No. 1 eight weeks ago, but dropped off the chart last week. The band’s 2000 debut album, Hybrid Theory, re-enters at No. 27. The album peaked at No. 2 in January 2002. Hybrid Theory has sold 10,489,000 copies in the U.S. in traditional album sales. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ dips from No. 5 to No. 6 in its 20th week. It spent its first two weeks at No. 1. Imagine Dragons’ Evolve dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its fourth week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The Moana soundtrack inches up from No. 9 to No. 8 in its 35th week. The album peaked at No. 2. Moana logs its 15th week at No. 1 on Top Soundtracks. That’s the longest run by any soundtrack since Frozen logged 44 weeks on top in 2013-14. Both albums, of course, are from animated Disney movies. Khalid’s American Teen rebounds from No. 13 to No. 9 in its 20th week. This equals the album’s highest ranking to date. Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic rebounds from No. 11 to No. 10 in its 35th week. This is its 34th week in the top 10. The album tops the 1 million mark in traditional album sales this week. It still has a ways to go to match Mars’s two previous studio albums. His debut, Doo-Wops and Hooligans, has sold 2,626,000 copies since its release in October 2010. His sophomore album, Unorthodox Jukebox, has sold 2,574,000 copies since its release in December 2012. All these figures are traditional album sales in the U.S. Three albums drop out of the top 10 this week. HAIM’s Something to Tell You plunges from No. 7 to No. 69. Calvin Harris’s Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 drops from No. 8 to No. 12. Drake’s More Life dips from No. 10 to No. 11. Coldplay’s Kaleidoscope debuts at No. 15. It’s the group’s second EP to crack the top 20. Prospekt’s March reached No. 15 in 2008. Chris Stapleton’s From a Room: Volume 1 rebounds from No. 30 to No. 23 in its 11th week. The album debuted and peaked at No. 2. The album logs its seventh week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums. Radiohead’s OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997 2017 dips from No. 23 to No. 24 in its third week. It’s No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums for the second week. Coming attractions: Look for Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life and Meek Mill’s Wins & Losses to battle for No. 1 next week.

Damage control www.billboard.com/biz/articles/7881874/clearing-up-free-streams-on-the-chartsClearing Up 'Free Streams' on the ChartsBy Billboard Staff | July 27, 2017 4:30 PM EDT We’re getting questions around whether Billboard is suddenly counting free streams for this coming week’s Billboard 200, seemingly due to some misinformation posted online. We’d like to take a moment to clear up any confusion that misinformation may have caused. Free streams -- with “free” defined as streams a listener has accessed without having a paid subscription or as part of a trial period subscription -- have counted towards the Billboard 200 since it changed to a consumption model in 2014 where the ranking is determined by blending album sales, track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. Nothing in our process has changed for this week. Billboard has always been transparent about the methodology behind the Billboard 200 chart, and you can read about our transforming to a consumption model here. Billboard does not currently have in place any rule or rules dictating how an approved streaming chart contributor can present or promote content on their services. Nor have we placed certain considerations or restrictions on how we would count those resulting streams on our charts. By the methodology now in place, which was arrived at in partnership with our industry constituents (record labels, distribution companies, etc.), on-demand audio streams from approved contributors, whether in front or behind a pay-wall, or via a free, discounted or paid trial, all count equally, provided the streams are consumer-initiated “on demand.” All of the above streaming variations are then put through an intense vetting process by Nielsen Music, which works closely with each streaming service to assure there are safeguards in place to guard against automated streams and/or excessive streaming from singular IP addresses. When Billboard adjusted the Billboard 200 to a consumption-based ranking, we knew as an industry that we were moving into uncharted territory and would be facing new and unique scenarios as streaming continued to grow in influence. We have continuously adapted to that evolving marketplace and retail landscape to create new parameters and rules. The debate in treating free streams differently than paid/subscription streams is a valid one, as is examining how each streaming provider allows access to its service. Again, no changes were enacted this week, but when and if any adjustments are made on either front in the future, they will be communicated in advance to the industry to allow for proper preparation time.

^Yeah and they don't allow free albums (i.e. paid by a third-party albums) to count. It CERTAINLY (this is intended to sound ironic) all makes sense now ...

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/7881917/billboard-200-chart-moves-bruno-mars-24k-magic-album-hits-1-million-sold-in-usBillboard 200 Chart Moves: Bruno Mars' '24K Magic' Album Hits 1 Million Sold in U.S.By Keith Caulfield | July 27, 2017 9:14 PM EDT Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart: — Bruno Mars, 24K Magic - No. 10 — Bruno Mars scores his third million-selling album, as 24K Magic motored past the million sales mark in the week ending July 20, according to Nielsen Music. The set, which was released last November, sold another 11,000 copies in the latest tracking frame, bringing its to-date sales sum to 1.008 million. 24K Magic follows Mars’ two earlier full-length studio efforts: his 2013 sophomore set, Unorthodox Jukebox (2.57 million sold), and his 2010 debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2.63 million). (Earlier in 2010, Mars issued the introductory digital EP It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, which has sold 27,000.) 24K Magic reached 1 million sold after 34 weeks, while Unorthodox took 13 and Doo-Wops did it in 32 frames. The new album continues to find success with its singles, as “Versace on the Floor” climbs 57-47 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Aug. 5. It if hits the top 40, which seems likely, it will grant Mars his third top 40 hit from 24K Magic and his 18th overall. He previously claimed a pair of top 40 hits from the album with its eponymous lead single (peaking at No. 4) and “That’s What I Like” (No. 1). — Kendrick Lamar, DAMN. – No. 2 — The former No. 1 DAMN. rises a spot, thanks in part to its vinyl release on July 14 -- three months after the set was first released (as both a CD and digital download). In its first week on vinyl, it sold 5,000 copies and helps the title’s overall sales rise 42 percent for the week (to 18,000 sold). — Radiohead, OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997-2017 – No. 23 — Radiohead’s reissue of OK Computer (dubbed OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997 2017) continues to profit from its well-received vinyl release on July 7 (a few weeks after its CD and digital debut on June 23). While the album descends one spot on the Billboard 200 (falling 23-24 with 16,000 units; down 6 percent), its vinyl sales surge 55 percent to a little more than 12,000 copies sold during the week. That’s the largest week for a vinyl album since October 2016. The last bigger sales week was registered in the frame ending Oct. 6, 2016, when Radiohead’s last studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool, sold 19,000 and Bon Iver’s 22, A Million shifted a little more than 12,000. The vinyl edition of the OK Computer reissue is available as a standard $40 triple-LP, as well as a $175 box set with the triple-LP, artwork, a sketchbook and even a cassette tape with demo recordings. (The various versions of the vinyl set are combined for sales and chart tracking purposes.) On the Vinyl Albums chart, OK Computer: OKNOTOK 1997 2017 spends a second week at No. 1. — Kidz Bop Kids, Kidz Bop 35 - No. 32 — Kidz Bop 35 launches at No. 32, granting the long-running series its 34th top 40 set. Every title in the main, numbered Kidz Bop series from Kidz Bop 2 through Kidz Bop 35 have reached the top 40. Kidz Bop Kids’ total album sales -- counting the main series as well as its various genre-specific spin-off titles -- stand at 17.3 million. — Zac Brown Band, Welcome Home – No. 25 — The title rises 98-25 with 16,000 units earned (up 139 percent) and 13,000 copies sold (up 212 percent), thanks to continued gains tallied by a concert ticket/album-bundle sale redemption promotion. — WizKid, Sounds From the Other Side — No. 107 — The Nigerian singer-songwriter (who co-wrote and was featured on Drake’s “One Dance”) arrives with his RCA debut (6,000 units; 3,000 sold). The Afrobeats-influenced set also starts at No. 2 on the World Albums chart.
