Arguably Madonna's last truly effervescent single and the third from Like A Prayer, this was her 17th consecutive top 5 hit on the Hot 100, breaking a tie with The Beatles and still held by Madonna today. Some may be surprised to find out that it actually performed better than Express Yourself, hitting #1 on R&R and just missed out on doing the same on the Hot 100 due to Janet Jackson jumping in front. It also found her in the top 10 at the same time as future collaborator Babyface. The video was directed by legendary photographer Herb Ritts, who had to be convinced by Madonna to do it as he had never directed a video before. He would go on to direct future videos for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey, among others. This has always been one of my favorite Madonna songs and has held up extremely well imo. You can definitely feel her Motown roots in this too.
